Ist so ein Studium denn sinnvoll?, aber auch die Frage: Wirst Du dann Lehrer? - nicht, und was sonst? sind alltägliche Themen für Pädagogen in Ausbildung und Beruf, denen sie sich stellen müssen, vor Eltern und anderen Personen, vor allem aber vor sich selbst. Die Frage nach dem Stellenwert der Disziplin im Gefüge anderer akademischer Disziplinen bzw. Berufssparten auf dem Arbeitsmarkt verlangen gleichermaßen nach einer Antwort, zumal die Soziale Arbeit nichts produziert, sondern der ständigen Unterstützung durch Finanzierung aus staatlichen Geldern bedarf. Was nun aber tut Soziale Arbeit? OLK spricht von Sozialer Arbeit als Normalisierungsarbeit, das heißt Sozialarbeit ist betraut „[...] mit der vorsorglichen Vermeidung und kurativen Beseitigung von Normverletzungen“ (Olk 1986, S. 12). Wenn sie so betrachtet wird, wie kann dann ihr Stellenwert als akademische Disziplin bestimmt werden? Die Frage wirft sich unter anderem auf vor dem Hintergrund eines Artikels der Wochenzeitung DIE ZEIT über die Zunahme von ehrenamtlicher Tätigkeit in sozialen Problemfällen aus privater Hand. Hier ist die Rede von „[...] Aufgaben, die Staat und Familie nicht mehr bewältigen können“ (Faller 2007, S. 15). Was hat die Sozialpädagogik solch einem Entwicklungstrend entgegenzusetzen? Auf diese Frage eine Antwort zu finden, ist Inhalt der vorliegenden Arbeit.
