Not a whole lot of us ever do. The reason is that we have departed in some significant ways from the biblical view of Christian life and growth. The New Testament highlights the communal, missional, and eschatological aspects of our walk with God. We grow in our faith as individual Christians to the degree that we are (a) deeply rooted relationally in a local church community that is (b) passionately playing its part in God’s grand story of Creation, Fall, Redemption, and Restoration, and (c) intently anticipating the summing of all things in Christ when Jesus returns. In recent decades, American evangelicals have traded away community, outreach, and the Bible’s teaching about eternity future for the pursuit of individual religious experience in the here-and-now. Why We Need the Church to Become More Like Jesus traces this departure from biblical Christianity through recent decades of popular evangelical trends and reminds us that faith centered on community, mission, and the story line of Scripture remains the key to the spiritual formation of the individual Christian.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Christians, we are trying to be more like Jesus and constantly falling short of that goal. The forty sermons in this book explore how anyone can be more like Jesus, including those who have not yet given themselves to Christ. In fact, at the end of each sermon you’ll see an invitation to do so, and the back of the book includes a prayer that will allow you to be born again as a child of God. The sermons are written in a way that can be understood by people from every walk of life. They are easy to read and expound on the Word of God so you can take him into your heart. The sermons also emphasize that as Christians, we are held to a higher standard as we must love everyone—even those who are evil. We love them because God loves them. Whether you’re a Christian seeking to ignite your faith or someone with questions about Christianity, the sermons in this book will change your life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last sermon he ever preached, John Stott echoed the Apostle Paul when he said that God’s greatest desire and plan for us is to become like his Son, Jesus Christ. BUT HOW? Stott prayed daily that God would bear the fruit of the Holy Spirit in his own life; a prayer clearly answered and evident in his Christlikeness. Chris Wright, a close friend of John Stott, reflects on all nine qualities that the Apostle Paul includes in the fruit of the Spirit in Galatians. He shows how they are rooted in the character of God, first revealed in the Old Testament, and modelled and taught by Jesus. With applications to encourage biblical growth with depth, and questions at the end of each chapter, this is an ideal resource for preachers, study groups and personal reflection. Many people rightly stress the importance of the gifts, power and ministries of the Holy Spirit, but easily neglect Paul’s command to live and walk by the Spirit and cultivate the fruit that only he can bear in our lives. Paying close attention to the beautiful and robust qualities that Paul includes in the fruit, and seeking daily to cultivate them with God’s help, is surely one way we can become more and more like Jesus.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spirituality is finding a center at the core of your being that connects, organizes, and defines every aspect of your life. For a Christ follower, that center is knowing Jesus. Christian spirituality is intensely relational. When asked to explain spirituality in a nutshell, Jesus said, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and all your strength.” And then he said, “Love your neighbor as yourself.” For a Christ follower, spirituality is about loving God and loving others. Spiritual growth is about becoming mature in all of its dimensions. The Bible encourages us to be become “mature in Christ”. The Scriptures define maturity as growing into the “fullness of the measure of the stature of Christ”. Becoming more like Christ is the fruit of a growing spirituality. Conversion is the initial step in the spiritual journey, but Christlikeness is the goal. Francis Chan, in his book Multiply, writes It’s impossible to be a disciple or a follower of someone and not end up like that person. Jesus said, ‘A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is fully trained will be like his teacher’ (Luke 6:40). That’s the whole point of being a disciple of Jesus: we imitate Him, carry on His ministry, and become more like Him in the process.” The Great Commission calls the church collectively and each follower of Christ personally to “make disciples of all nations.” A disciple is literally a learner, a follower, an apprentice of Jesus Christ. But what should a mature disciple look like? Bill Hull, in The Complete Book of Discipleship, describes being a disciple as becoming like Jesus Christ in... His Convictions – Believing what Christ Believed His Character – Living Like Christ Lived His Spirituality – Training like Christ Trained His Relationships – Loving like Christ Loved His Service – Ministering like Christ Ministered His Purpose – Leading like Christ Led (mission) This collection of essays seeks to reflect on what it will take to “making disciples” at the local church level. Hull’s characteristics provide a conceptual grid for thinking through the implications of following through on Christ’s command. Chuck Coats begins by unpacking Jesus’ reliance on the Scriptures as the foundation for what he believed and taught. The Sermon on the Mount inspires Michael Wilkinson’s discussion of what it means to live like Christ lived. Rob Bedard explores Jesus’ approach to discipleship as illustrated in his training relationship with Peter. Jeff Beck then discusses how the Father’s love for Jesus serves as a paradigm for his life of love and for ours. Mick Nelson reflects on what ministry modeled on Christ’s example means for serving others in our current contexts. In the final essay, Nelson also discusses the implications of Jesus leadership style of submission, sacrifice, and service for our own spiritual leadership. It is the desire of the contributors that these essays will serve as a catalyst for thinking through what it means to make disciples through local church and that it will help pastors and congregations.

Have you wanted to know how you might better defeat nagging sins, and find new freedom? Sanctification: A User’s Guide to Becoming More Like Jesus offers you a deep understanding of precisely how you can grow in likeness to Jesus Christ. Based upon a careful study of the teachings of the Bible, and great leaders of the Reformation, Sanctification presents a clear and compelling approach to daily practices which will actually assist the Christian in spiritual growth through relying on the grace of God to transform them. Starting with a framework for understanding what holiness is, Sanctification shows you how to: desire holiness, rely on God’s grace, apprehend God’s life-altering love, grow in faith and repentance, deny one’s self, and engage the church. While many books on sanctification emphasize one or two aspects of the Christian’s growth in holiness Sanctification presents a complete approach to a biblical lifestyle which helps one grow more like Christ.

Book excerpt: It’s one thing to know the story of the Bible. It’s another thing to live it. Grounded in carefully selected Scripture, Believe, NKJV is a unique spiritual growth experience that takes you on a journey to think, act, and be more like Jesus. Pastor Randy Frazee walks you through the ten key beliefs of the Christian faith, the ten key Practices of a Jesus-follower, and the ten key Virtues that characterize someone who is becoming more like Jesus. Every believer needs to ask these three questions: What do I believe? What should I do? Who am I becoming? What you believe in your heart will define who you become. God wants you to become like Jesus - it is the most truthful and powerful way to live - and the journey to becoming like Jesus begins by thinking like Jesus. When you study the life of Jesus you will notice a distinct pattern: Jesus faithfully lived in a purposeful way. Jesus compared the Christian life to a vine. He is the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in the vine of Christ, over time you will produce amazing and scrumptious fruit at the end of your branches for all to see and taste. You become like Jesus. Each chapter uses short topical passages from the New King James Version (NKJV) to help you live the story of the Bible. As you journey through this Bible, whether in a group or on your own, one simple truth will become undeniably clear: what you believe drives everything.

Book excerpt: Rising Vineyard Leader Unlocks the Supernatural Kingdom Promises of Romans 6-8 Many believers live with a gnawing sense that there must be more to the Christian life than what they're living. They stumble around with a deep sense of discontent or resignation, struggling to see how their faith is applicable, exciting, or even visible in their lives. What if the answer is that there is more to the gospel than we imagined? With bold honesty and fresh biblical insight, pastor and speaker Putty Putman reveals that the secret to a vibrant life of more is found not in what you do, but in who you are. Through the Holy Spirit, we are not just forgiven, but made new. This new identity makes possible a thrilling life of impact, adventure, blessing, and true freedom--a life, like Jesus' own, that is connected to and empowered by a God who is, and does, more than we ever imagined.
