Book excerpt: Why Easter? is a concise, easy-to-read study of the very real questions people may have about Jesus and why his birth, death and resurrection are central to the Christian faith. Written by Nicky Gumbel, the pioneer of Alpha and vicar of HTB in London, it explores why we need Jesus and how he satisfies our hunger for meaning and purpose in life, for life beyond death, and for forgiveness. Exploring Jesus' claims, character and death, Nicky uses effortlessly uncomplicated language to talk about the freedom we receive from guilt, addition, and fear, and the freedom to know God, to love other people, and to change. Why Easter? is illustrated throughout by Charlie Mackesy, author of the best-selling book ‘The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse’. The booklet is designed to be given away at Easter services and events and to anyone with questions about Jesus and the Christian faith. This expanded edition – which replaces the previous booklet that is no longer in print – includes a couple of excerpts from Nicky Gumbel’s Bible in One Year, an ideal companion to reading the Bible, around the theme of Easter.

Book excerpt: The story of the twentieth-century Liturgical Movement is, more than anything else, about the rediscovery and renewed understanding of the fundamental reality of the Paschal Mystery and of the Paschal identity of the Church. This identity is expressed and celebrated whenever the Body of Christ – every member – welcomes new members in the waters of baptism and feasts with them in the Eucharist, especially as these are celebrated during Holy Week. This book explores this rediscovery, first in the Roman Catholic Church and then in the Episcopal Church and other Churches of the Anglican Communion, and looks in particular at how both grassroots and official work played a role in renewing and restoring the liturgical celebrations of Holy Week.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Outside France, French anthropology is conventionally seen as being dominated by grand theory produced by writers who have done little or no fieldwork themselves, and who may not even count as anthropologists in terms of the institutional structures of French academia. This applies to figures from Durkheim to Derrida, Mauss to Foucault, though there are partial exceptions, such as Lévi-Strauss and Bourdieu. It has led to a contrast being made, especially perhaps in the Anglo-Saxon world, between French theory relying on rational inference, and British empiricism based on induction and generally skeptical of theory. While there are contrasts between the two traditions, this is essentially a false view. It is this aspect of French anthropology that this collection addresses, in the belief that the neglect of many of these figures outside France is seriously distorting our view of the French tradition of anthropology overall. At the same time, the collection will provide a positive view of the French tradition of ethnography, stressing its combination of technical competence and the sympathies of its practitioners for its various ethnographic subjects.

Once again Walter Burghardt, one of America's most talented and beloved preachers, brings his many devotees a brand-new collection of homilies, his fourteenth published by Paulist Press. The thirty homilies were delivered for occasions as diverse as a Sunday, a weekday, a memorial of a saint, or a hero such as Martin Luther King, Jr., a wedding, a radio mass, and his seventieth year as a priest. What ties them together, however, is Burghardt's abiding interest in, and pursuit of, biblical justice. As with his previous volumes, this collection will be inspirational for anyone who preaches, as a newcomer or veteran in the field, or, just as importantly, for anyone who listens. +

Book excerpt: The study assesses the main issues in the current debate about the early history of Pesach and Easter and provides new insights into the development of these two festivals. The author argues that the prescriptions of Exodus 12 provide the celebration of the Pesach in Jerusalem with an etiological background in order to connect the pilgrim festival with the story of the Exodus. The thesis that the Christian Easter evolved as a festival against a Jewish form of celebrating Pesach in the second century and that the development of Easter Sunday is dependent upon this custom is endorsed by the author’s close study of relevant texts such as the Haggada of Pesach; the “Poem of the four nights” in the Palestinian Targum Tradition; the structure of the Easter vigil.

Book excerpt: As Dr. Wenham states early in his introduction, The story of Jesus' resurrection is told by five different writers, whose accounts differ from each other to an astonishing degree. Wenham begins by setting the scene of Jerusalem and its environs, going on to describe the main actors in the events with particular attention to Mary Magdalene and the five writers themselves, and then examining in detail all the biblical narratives from Good Friday through Easter Day to the Ascension. He concludes that the various accounts as they stand can be satisfactorily reconciled to provide a trustworthy record for the church. Valuable appendices elucidate Wenham's response to the technicalities of gospel criticism.
