Book excerpt: Nearly one in two Americans have an invisible chronic illness, and nineteen million are disabled by one. They have no cane or wheel chair to let others know that something is wrong. Caregivers struggle right along with them and wonder, "Is there hope? Does God care about what we're going through? What does God promise us?" Thirteen years ago the author's husband Dave was disabled by an invisible illness. He had mysterious symptoms such as chemical sensitivities, joint pain, bouts of confusion, and dizziness, but had to leave work without a diagnosis. "God, how will we live and raise our children?" Dave was finally diagnosed with Lyme disease, but that wasn't what changed their lives most. Are you ready to find something more than just a lesson to learn from painful experiences? Are you ready to meet God in a deeper, more meaningful way? In the package of suffering, God wraps a most surprising, precious gift: Himself. If you find yourself struggling to see God, may these meditations carry you to his arms of love and his throne of grace.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Relativization in Ojibwe, Michael D. Sullivan Sr. compares varieties of the Ojibwe language and establishes subdialect groupings for Southwestern Ojibwe, often referred to as Chippewa, of the Algonquian family. Drawing from a vast corpus of both primary and archived sources, he presents an overview of two strategies of relative clause formation and shows that relativization appears to be an exemplary parameter for grouping Ojibwe dialect and subdialect relationships. Specifically, Sullivan targets the morphological composition of participial verbs in Algonquian parlance and categorizes the variation of their form across a number of communities. In addition to the discussion of participles and their role in relative clauses, he presents original research linking geographical distribution of participles, most likely a result of historic movements of the Ojibwe people to their present location in the northern midwestern region of North America. Following previous dialect studies concerned primarily with varieties of Ojibwe spoken in Canada, Relativization in Ojibwe presents the first study of dialect variation for varieties spoken in the United States and along the border region of Ontario and Minnesota. Starting with a classic Algonquian linguistic tradition, Sullivan then recasts the data in a modern theoretical framework, using previous theories for Algonquian languages and familiar approaches such as feature checking and the split-CP hypothesis.

Book excerpt: When you dive into Who Takes Care of the Caretaker?, you'll find an answer to that very question. Author Tom Krause has concluded that caretakers need to help themselves as much as they help others. Their own mental health is just as important as the stability of those they care for. In this new guide, Krause discusses the many stresses and challenges caretakers face. If you're a caretaker, you'll find coping skills and other techniques to help you protect your own mental and emotional health. The first section of the book defines "caretakers" and outlines some of their basic personality types. Each type will respond to stress a little differently, so it's critical that you know your type. A-type and B-type personalities will have vastly different perspectives on the same situation, so corresponding coping techniques will differ. Krause also teaches you twenty-six unique ways to cope with stress, including physical exercises that give you room to breathe and emotional activities that help you think about your identity and how you handle certain problems. Each one is easy to implement and will provide additional insight into your work as a caretaker.

Book excerpt: Rooted in Jamaican folklore and African mythology, Providence Pond by novelist Beresford McLean is a remarkable tale depicting British attempts to influence ancient African customs in the process of reshaping Providence, Jamaica. Engaging the reader with its exceptionally well written and quite unique perspective, Providence Pond draws upon the communal Jamaican lifestyle centered in the African mores of Kumina wisdom and the everyday experiences of the Jamaican natives as their family concepts of love, truth, and hope are all threatened by the largely British-dominant society. Highly entertaining, Providence Pond is very strongly recommended reading and a welcome addition to any community library fiction collection. Bitter conflict and raw excitement abound as deep religious and political fervor divide and set ablaze the Caribbean community of Providence Pond, a former British slave holding in the futile valleys of western St. Mary, Jamaica. As this community struggles for life and definition following the passing of slavery, the imperative - which native religion, political ideology, or vestige of British thinking will prevail to lead the nascent community - must be resolved. During slavery the answer was clear: British thought must prevail. The eventual collapse of the strong, central British control gave rise to African traditions that were long kept semi-dormant in the distant backlands of huge slave plantation. Various factions - African, Indian, and British - vie for social and political dominance. The momentous events of Providence Pond are staged above the backdrop of the still larger conflict of World War 1. In Providence Pond there is first a triangular grouping derived from remnants of Ashanti, Congo and, British elements locked in the struggle to define the "only way." As the country forges along and the conflict in Providence Pond escalates, Congo King the leader of the forbidden Kumina sect, finds himself pitted in impending battle against the ad hoc Ashanti-Christian coalition - lead by the Anglican Reverend, Bernard Watkins. The torch is set! McLean's Providence Pond is a tale of wisdom and deep socio-political insight. It offers a fresh opportunity - yet another way of looking at our own modern conditions: to reevaluate past credence and prejudices - and finding new ways of courageously living old concepts.

Book excerpt: With the numbers of childfree women increasing around the globe, it's time to recognise that the choice not to have children is a valid option, and childfree women are reshaping the definition of womanhood in a fundamental way. Unfortunately, they are largely misunderstood, judged, criticised and scorned. And this pressure, these expectations, can make some women feel compelled to make a decision that's wrong for them, or to put off making a decision only to change their minds later. Regardless of your choice, this is a choice that you should be allowed to make based on what you want. Having a child, or being childfree, should never be something that you do due to obligation, tradition, expectation or because all your friends are doing it. With this in mind, the goal of this book is to unveil some of the different forces that might have been turning you away from what you truly want, or diluting the strength of your inner voice, as well as to help you make a decision that's right for you.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a therapist and expert in emotional eating, the first book to explore the link between weight gain and women who do too much, complete with proven techniques for dropping pounds. Many women put too much on their plates, both literally and figuratively. In Nice Girls Finish Fat, psychotherapist Karen R. Koenig explains the link between the two and gives overweight women detailed advice on how to lose their extra baggage—both emotional and physical—by becoming more assertive in every aspect of life. For the millions of overweight women in America, diet and exercise just aren’t cutting it. That’s because many of these women have emotional issues buried deep beneath those stubborn pounds, issues that must be dealt with first if weight loss plans are to succeed. In this illuminating book, based on decades of professional experience, Karen Koenig offers on-the-page psychotherapy to help readers attack the roots of their food problems. With her engaging personal style, she teaches women about the biological connections between repressed emotions and eating, revealing the ways many women use food to stuff their anger, control their aggression, and assuage their feelings of guilt—all in the pursuit of being “nice.” Giving “good girls” permission to love themselves first, Koenig offers thought-provoking quizzes and questions to help readers identify and overcome the habits that have been holding them back. Empowering readers to gain the confidence they need to lose weight, Nice Girls Finish Fat not only shows women how to stop obsessing about food and develop healthy eating habits, it teaches readers skills to improve every aspect of their lives.
