The essays discuss risk, where fear comes from and how it can be overcome, beginner¿s mind, openness to experience, the real measure of skill, being alone, martial arts concepts applicable to kayaking, confronting limits and knowing ourselves.Ammons has a PhD in psychology and 35 years as a world class whitewater kayaker. Book excerpt: "In White Waters and Black Gordon MacCreagh, with a wicked eye for absurdities, recounts his adventures with eight "Eminent Scientificos" as they set out to explore the Amazon in 1923 without any idea of what lies ahead of them: rapids, malaria, monkey stew, and "dangerous savages." A combination of Mark Twain's The Innocents Abroad and a cautionary tale for explorers, this is one of the most honest accounts ever written of a scientific expedition."

This book was released on 2018-12-04 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tools for navigating today's hyper-connected, rapidly changing, and radically contingent white water world. Design Unbound presents a new tool set for having agency in the twenty-first century, in what the authors characterize as a white water world—rapidly changing, hyperconnected, and radically contingent. These are the tools of a new kind of practice that is the offspring of complexity science, which gives us a new lens through which to view the world as entangled and emerging, and architecture, which is about designing contexts. In such a practice, design, unbound from its material thingness, is set free to design contexts as complex systems. In a world where causality is systemic, entangled, in flux, and often elusive, we cannot design for absolute outcomes. Instead, we need to design for emergence. Design Unbound not only makes this case through theory but also presents a set of tools to do so. With case studies that range from a new kind of university to organizational, and even societal, transformation, Design Unbound draws from a vast array of domains: architecture, science and technology, philosophy, cinema, music, literature and poetry, even the military. It is presented in five books, bound as two volumes. Different books within the larger system of books will resonate with different reading audiences, from architects to people reconceiving higher education to the public policy or defense and intelligence communities. The authors provide different entry points allowing readers to navigate their own pathways through the system of books.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When paddlers think of whitewater, they rarely think of Texas. But author Steve Daniel has spent years kayaking both recognized and little-known streams and now provides a whitewater guide for those who seek adventure in the Lone Star state. In Texas Whitewater Daniel describes more than seventy whitewater rivers and creeks ranging from multi-day stretches to play spots for surfing or practicing squirt moves on eddy lines. Each description includes a map and an overview of the location, gradient, drainage, and difficulty of the run. Eighty-five eye-catching photographs highlight whitewater features and showcase some of the state's best boaters at play. Daniel also provides information on access, legal navigability, and safety issues. The guide is arranged according to river drainages: Trinity, Brazos, Colorado, Guadalupe-San Antonio-Nueces, and Rio Grande. Drawing on his experiences and that of other whitewater enthusiasts, Daniel offers a detailed and entertaining account of rivers and creeks with the greatest prospects for whitewater, encouraging paddlers to lesser-known runs. He includes tips on obtaining information on water levels via the Internet and stream flow data locations. Also included is the first published legal summary on the navigability of state waterways, prepared by Texas Assistant Attorney General Joe Riddell. Well-written and informative, Texas Whitewater is sure to become the "`bible' for paddlers and for those coming to visit and explore" the state.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, efforts to recognize and accommodate cultural diversity have gained some traction in the politics of US health care. But to date, anthropological perspectives have figured unevenly in efforts to define and address mental health problems. Particularly challenging are examinations of Native peoples’ experiences with alcohol. Erica Prussing provides the first in-depth assessment of the politics of Native sobriety by focusing on the Northern Cheyenne community in southeastern Montana, where for many decades the federally funded health care system has relied on the Twelve Step program of Alcoholics Anonymous. White Man’s Water provides a thoughtful and careful analysis of Cheyenne views of sobriety and the politics that surround the selective appeal of Twelve Step approaches despite wide-ranging local critiques. Narratives from participants in these programs debunk long-standing stereotypes about ”Indian drinking” and offer insight into the diversity of experiences with alcohol that actually occur among Native North Americans. This critical ethnography employs vivid accounts of the Northern Cheyenne people to depict how problems with alcohol are culturally constructed, showing how differences in age, gender, and other social features can affect involvement with both drinking and sobriety. These testimonies reveal the key role that gender plays in how Twelve Step program participants engage in a selective and creative process of appropriation at Northern Cheyenne, adapting the program to accommodate local cultural priorities and spiritual resources. The testimonies also illuminate community reactions to these adaptations, inspiring deeper inquiry into how federally funded health services are provided on the reservation. This book will appeal to readers with an interest in Native studies, ethnography, women’s studies, and medical anthropology. With its critical consideration of how cultural context shapes drinking and sobriety, White Man’s Water offers a multivocal perspective on alcohol’s impact on health and the cultural complexities of sobriety.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: White water safety and rescue for canoeists, kayakers and rafters. A completely revised new edition now in full colour throughout. You can find presentation resources of the photos and illustrations below. The writing of this book started when I tried to put some notes together as course notes for the safety and rescue courses I was running at Plas y Brenin. It soon became clear what a huge topic it is and in sheer frustration I explained to a friend that I would have to write a book to cover it properly. His answer was, "Why don't you?" This is the result. I hope you find it enjoyable and informative. What's new in the 2nd Edition? Full colour and new photos throughout. The text has been completely revised and numerous small but significant improvements have been made. The principles of safety and rescue have been unified and the mneumonic CLAP adopted. This is to make it easier to remember them and fall in line with current practice in the teaching of white water safety. The rescue section has been reorganized to fit in more closely with the TRTTG 'low to high risk' model. The rafting sections have been completely rewritten by Geraint Rowlands. The chapter 'Planning a Descent' has been extended to cover factors to be considered when travelling abroad. One-handed signals as used by Paul O'Sullivan in his chapter in the BCU Canoe and Kayak Handbook have been adopted.
