Starting in towns and villages including Castleton, Ilam, Buxton, Tideswell, Hartington and Longnor, these day walks are perfectly suited for year-round trips to the Peak District and are suitable for walkers of all abilities. Across 40 day walks, this guidebook offers a range of routes that showcase the best of the Peak District landscape: rolling green hills rising up to limestone ridges, deep dales with meandering rivers, and limestone caves and pinnacles. There is plenty of history to explore too, with many walks visiting historical sites from Neolithic, medieval and industrial periods. Most of the walks range between 4 and 9 miles and can be enjoyed in 2-4 hours walking. As several start from the same car park or village, many walks can be combined for longer days out. Each walk features clear OS mapping and detailed route description interspersed with insights into the area's history, geology, art and culture, making this a brilliant guide for both navigation and learning about the Peak District.

Book excerpt: Ronan Frost's White Peak is a fast-paced action thriller full of death-defying adventure. Greg Rask, a dying tech billionaire, has invested millions chasing miracle cures. None of them are worth a damn, but he refuses to give up. Now, he’s gathering a team willing to go to the ends of the earth chasing life. Each of Rask's crew has beaten incredible odds to rise from the ashes of their old lives to where they are now. Together, their next task is to retrieve a painting that is believed to hide a map which, if genuine, marks it as a treasure of the Ahnenerbe, the occult wing of the SS, who had devoted dozens of expeditions in search of the three cintamani stones for their combined properties, and the lost city where they were rumored to lay hidden: Shambhala. But a mystical brotherhood sworn to protect the secrets of the ancients—the same secrets that allow its members to defy death—will stop at nothing to ensure that Rask’s crew fail. In an adrenalin-pumping quest through some of the most savage terrains known to man, the crew will be pushed to the limits of endurance and beyond.

Many of these accidents occurred in the vast Mojave Desert, others on the cloud-shrouded, snow-capped mountains of the largest county in the lower forty-eight states. Searches often were labored yet fruitless, even for the privileged: Frank Sinatra's mother perished here in a downed plane. The quest for an aircraft containing $5,000 in cash has become the stuff of legend. Tales of survival in uninhabited, rugged landscapes have been especially harrowing. Join renowned aircraft-crash search specialist G. Pat Macha for dozens of sorrowful, triumphant, touching and surprising true stories of those who lived through the ordeals of plane crashes--and others who didn't.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A century of aviation research and military flights over Los Angeles County has left the San Gabriel Mountains, Mojave Desert and the near-shore Pacific Ocean strewn with more than 1,500 aircraft crash sites. Barnstormers and test pilots too often made unexpected final landings. Accidents occurred on a nearly daily basis during World War II training maneuvers. Private planes, a sign of 1950s prosperity, also met tragic ends. These epic incidents include the 1971 tragedy of Flight 706 in which an airliner collided with a marine fighter jet above Mount Bliss, killing fifty people. Renowned aircraft crash search specialist G. Pat Macha recounts dozens of sorrowful, triumphant and surprising true stories of those who lived through these ordeals while offering touching tributes to those who did not.

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A harrowing, moving memoir of the 1972 plane crash that left its survivors stranded on a glacier in the Andes—and one man’s quest to lead them all home—now in a special edition for 2022, commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of the crash, featuring a new introduction by the author “In straightforward, staggeringly honest prose, Nando Parrado tells us what it took—and what it actually felt like—to survive high in the Andes for seventy-two days after having been given up for dead.”—Jon Krakauer, author of Into the Wild “In the first hours there was nothing, no fear or sadness, just a black and perfect silence.” Nando Parrado was unconscious for three days before he woke to discover that the plane carrying his rugby team to Chile had crashed deep in the Andes, killing many of his teammates, his mother, and his sister. Stranded with the few remaining survivors on a lifeless glacier and thinking constantly of his father’s grief, Parrado resolved that he could not simply wait to die. So Parrado, an ordinary young man with no particular disposition for leadership or heroism, led an expedition up the treacherous slopes of a snowcapped mountain and across forty-five miles of frozen wilderness in an attempt to save his friends’ lives as well as his own. Decades after the disaster, Parrado tells his story with remarkable candor and depth of feeling. Miracle in the Andes, a first-person account of the crash and its aftermath, is more than a riveting tale of true-life adventure; it is a revealing look at life at the edge of death and a meditation on the limitless redemptive power of love.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author, an aircraft wreckologist, together with several other like-minded friends, has investigated 30 crash sites in the Western States, both military and civilian, covering the period from World War II to the recent present. Together with hundreds of photos of the sites and wreckage found at them, the author records their findings as well as the story of the crash and any investigations into the incident. This is a follow-up volume to the three volumes the author produced for aircraft crash sites found in the Pacific Northwest. In contrast with the Pacific Northwest, aircraft wreck hunting in the deserts and mountains of Arizona, California, and Nevada is entirely different. With the absence of many trees, visibility and GPS reception is usually excellent. With a good set of binoculars one can spot gleaming pieces of wreckage in bright sunshine from many miles away. Weather is not usually too much of a factor although we have witnessed some ferocious thunderstorms and flash flooding which can be very dangerous. We also need to limit our hiking to early mornings or spring and fall months to avoid the intense heat of the summer. Normally crash sites are located miles out in the middle of nowhere in the southwestern deserts and accessed only by four-wheel-drive vehicles. Because of this, we bring at least two vehicles to have a backup in case if one breaks down. The vehicles are equipped with winches, shovels, and spare tires because getting stuck in sand is all too common. Before making trips out on the desert, our wreck hunting groups usually conduct meetings early in the mornings to make sure that everyone is accounted for and that we have plenty of survival supplies. This means that our backpacks are loaded with food and water, that we have cell phones and portable radios, and that we have several cases of extra drinking water. The vehicles are topped with gas, checked for tools and equipment, and tires are deflated to give better traction in sand. It is not uncommon to lose all cell phone coverage, so we test and make sure that each individual hiker has a functioning hand-held radio. We also bring along medical supplies onboard the vehicles and in the backpacks of each hiker. Without cell phone coverage we are unable to call for help and it is usually at least an hour drive out of the desert. We exercise caution and good judgment in knowing that help is going to be a long time coming. 535 mostly color and some B&W photos, bibliography.
