Book excerpt: A gothic tale set in a rambling house by the sea in which a maid cares for a mute old woman with a mysterious past, alongside her superstitious staff--from the author of The Silent Companions. A perfect spooky read! Consumption has ravaged Louise Pinecroft's family, leaving her and her father alone and heartbroken. But Dr. Pinecroft has plans for a revolutionary experiment: convinced that sea air will prove to be the cure his wife and children needed, he arranges to house a group of prisoners suffering from the disease in the caves beneath his new Cornish home. While he devotes himself to his controversial medical trials, Louise finds herself increasingly discomfited by the strange tales her new maid tells of the fairies that hunt the land, searching for those they can steal away to their realm. Forty years later, Hester arrives at Morvoren House to take up a position as nurse to the now partially paralyzed and mute Miss Pinecroft. Hester has fled to Cornwall to try to escape her past, but surrounded by superstitious staff enacting bizarre rituals, she soon discovers her new home may be just as dangerous as her last. Laura Purcell's THE SHAPE OF DARKNESS is now out from Penguin!

Book excerpt: Enter the Teutonic Fantasy Realm in this enchanting first in series urban fantasy featuring elemental witches and time travel. “All of history is open to you now. You need only to choose which era you want to claim as your own.” I’ve got enough magic going on in my life. It’s tough to integrate with society when you can summon ice in the heat of summer. But now I’m charging ahead toward a normal life: I’m going to college, and then I’ll work at my father’s corporation. My ice magic can take a back seat for a while. Unfortunately, fate had other plans when it led me to a fairy, a gorge—and a demonic relic rumored to harbor the power over time itself. Great. Using this thing might go against my beliefs, but I have to protect it, if nothing else. And maybe along the way I’ll get brave enough to admit my feelings for Hans, my most trusted mentor. No problem that he’s a Teuton priest, my father’s accountant, and utterly uninterested in romance. What could go wrong? Arcane Gateway is book 1 in the His Name Was Augustin series. It features an ice witch in a forbidden age gap romance with a fire mage as they confront a time portal guarded by a demon. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: MY STORY IS about an addict whose name is Elijah Wayne Jackson, Eli for short. This has many characters, mainly drug addicts. I have woven the Lady in Red on the assumption that she is a product of his paranoia. The story line, I hope, will bring the public to an awareness of addicts and the things they do when they are high and ingesting drugs. The story is very explicit and complete with mystery and science fiction overtures. My story takes place in a ghetto in Brooklyn, New York, around the late 1980s, a time when crack cocaine was strongly used. Although other addicts and their highs are being depicted, it is only to give the reader a sense of how things play out in the drug world as opposed to the real world. Basically, I am trying to bring science fiction to the ghetto in a more believable sense. Along with the mystery of the Lady in Red, there is another main character that comes into play, and his name is James. James is a mystery within himself. To go into more detail about my story and its characters, you will just have to read my story.

One year to the day the challenge is called, all nine pieces of the oppgave ringe must be delivered to the capital. Four are already there, but five more need to be found. Chance, a dreamer and adventure seeker, has been chosen by his family to return to Sommerhjem to retrieve a piece of the oppgave ringe his father hid before the family fled the country to escape certain demise. But what he thought would be a grand adventure turns out to be more than he bargained for; he is thrown into the brig on a smugglers ship, and that only marks the beginning of his troubles. Meanwhile, Yara secures work in the royal library, where she secretly begins researching the whereabouts of a piece of the oppgave ringe her family was once charged with keeping safe. But what she eventually uncovers soon takes her and her fox companion, Toki, on a dangerous expedition to Sommerhjems border. In this continuing fantasy, two seekers embark on separate journeys to find treasured objects and return them to their rightful place without any idea of where life is about to take each of them.

Book excerpt: Some fifty years after war, the Korean peninsula remains divided at the 38th parallel. The end of the Cold War in 1989 brought changes to many communist states, but North Korea remains embroiled in international crises. Looking forward, North Korea seemingly faces four choices: collapse, further war, peaceful reunification with the south, or status quo. This historical and political analysis covers the period from the division of the peninsula in 1948 to the future of North Korea beyond 2003. Topics include the Korean War, Kim Il Sung, famine, the economic collapse of the 1990s, Kim Jong Il, South Korea's sunshine policy, nuclear ambitions, "rogue state" status, George W. Bush's "axis of evil" remark made during his 2002 State of the Union address, and the current state of diplomatic relations. The final chapter considers the case for reconciliation. Appendix A is a chronology of the Korean Peninsula from 2333 BCE to 2003 CE. Appendix B is a directory of Korean Studies institutes and think tanks. Tables and statistics are integrated throughout the text. Reader aids accompany each chapter, including lists of further reading, key terms and questions.

Book excerpt: When it happens you don't expect it. You don't expect anything anymore. You lose your head for just a second and someone walks into your life, turns it upside down, tenderly, brutally, making a place for himself. Even before anything has happened it's already too late. You can't tell who is choosing whom, when, how, why. You only know these things later when everything is over and each person holds the other accountable for what has gone on. These opening lines from Our Share of Time begin a story concerned with the impossibility of sustaining love, or even understanding how and why it started. In this diarylike reminiscence, Pierre Forgue, a Parisian school teacher, offers us an apologia for his past and present life as well as a bleak picture of his future. Moving between his Paris apartment and his summer cottage in Peyroc, he vacillates between love and indifference, between Duck (the young man who casually enters his life and who callously departs) and the rest of the world, between lost youth and approaching middle age.His is the universal midlife crisis accentuated by the presence of Duck, the now-you-see-him-now-you-don't young and handsome intruder who brings both happiness and misery. This novel, about the difficulty of maintaining lasting relationships, succeeds by the painstaking honesty with which Yves Navarre records events whose ending is happy, painful, and sweet.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two worlds are intertwined in this hauntingly beautiful story as it moves from Toronto to the English moors and to Venice, Italy. The time frame shifts between present and past, linking the lives of a young Brontë scholar (a woman in the throes of a troubled love affair), a turn-of-the-century female balloonist, and an elusive explorer with the ghost – or the memory – of Emily Brontë. Urquhart reveals something about the act of artistic creation, the ways in which stories enter our lives, and about the cyclical nature of love throughout time. This is a novel of darkness and light, of intense weather and inner calm.
