The Ruru and Kiwi went into the bush, wrapped snug in night's velvety black. They took some runny manuka honey tied up in a flax-woven sack. Drawing on a cast of nocturnal New Zealand creatures, with award-winning illustrations by Amy Haarhoff, Clare Scott's story imagines Edward Lear's famous nonsense poem taking place in a moonlit forest in Aotearoa.

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER Polly Evans was a woman with a mission. Before the traditional New Zealand male hung up his sheep shears for good, Polly wanted to see this vanishing species with her own eyes. Venturing into the land of giant kauri trees and smaller kiwi birds, she explores the country once inhabited by fierce Maori who carved their enemies’ bones into cutlery, bushwhacking pioneers, and gold miners who lit their pipes with banknotes—and comes face-to-face with their surprisingly tame descendants. So what had become of the mighty Kiwi warrior? As Polly tears through the countryside at seventy-five miles an hour, she attempts to solve this mystery while pub-crawling in Hokitika, scaling the Southern Alps, and enduring a hair-raising stay in a mining town where the earth has been known to swallow houses whole. And as she chronicles the thrills and travails of her extraordinary odyssey, Polly’s search for the elusive Kiwi comes full circle—teaching her some hilarious and surprising lessons about motorcycles, modern civilization, and men.

Book excerpt: Playground for the rich, arena for the powerful, graveyard for the unlucky—welcome to Palm Springs! For some, it’s the pleasure capital of the world. For other, it’s a city of last chances, a paradise on the edge of the desert. For soon-to-be-ex-cop Lynn Cutter, sweating out a disability pension, it could become a point of no return. As a rule, Cutter wouldn’t give a private investigator the time of day, but Breda Burrows is the exception to every rule. Sultry, blue-eyed, long-legged, and tough as nails, Breda can be very convincing, and she’s convinced Cutter to be her guide through the glittering netherworld of Palm Springs—an explosive mix of silicone, Geritol, old money, and murder. The trail begins with the monied socialite wife of a philandering husband. The wife doesn’t care about her husband’s infidelity, but she does want to know why he’s made a secret deposit—at a sperm bank. What Cutter wants to know is the identity of the strange, violent man hubby is meeting in the desert—a man known only as the fugitive.

Book excerpt: Judy Boyd was born at Mataura, in Southland. She had to leave High School before her sixteenth birthday, to go home to the farm and house-keep for the family when her mother was ill. Four years later, she left home to train as a Karitane Nurse in Christchurch. Her parents went overseas for nine months after Judy graduated from Karitane; she returned to the farm to house-keep for her brother, during which time she took babies in at home while their parents were on holiday. Then Judy and Peter Boyd became engaged; he went to Australia on a working holiday, and when her parents returned, Judy also left for a six months' working holiday in Australia. After they married they lived in Taumarunui, Rangiora, New Plymouth, and Christchurch again, and during those first six years their three sons, Hamish, Dougal and Andrew were born. In 1974 they shifted out of town to twenty acres at Broadfields, half way between Hornby and Lincoln. Five years later they planted one and a half acres of blueberries: a thriving commercial venture. At age forty-two, following a year at Mrs Ritchie's Commercial College, Judy became a secretary at Lincoln University and after twelve years working there, she changed departments. Because the new job was only three days a week, she had plenty of time for study and enrolled in an English Degree by correspondence with Massey University. After three years in the new job, she retired from Lincoln, and enrolled at Canterbury University to complete her Honours degree in Creative Writing. Being at a loose end again, she heard about Grant Hindin-Miller's Creative Writing courses at the Continuing Education Department of Canterbury University, and nine years later, in her eightieth year has finally finished her book and at last realized her dream of becoming a writer.

But uncertainty and inexperience soon gave way to the challenge of the walks themselves, as she embarked on the greatest adventure of her life. Fighting snowstorms, blisters and the attentions of unwanted tramping companions, she determined to enjoy whatever fate might throw her way. The hazards were soon outweighed by the natural splendour of New Zealand's great outdoors, as she trekked over mountains, through rivers, along beaches, past glaciers, into craters, around lakes, beside active volcanoes and through some of the oldest forests in the world. NEW BOOTS IN NEW ZEALAND is a day-by-day account of all nine Great Walks, from the majesty of the famous Milford Track to the unexpected variety of the Heaphy and the beguiling mystery of the Whanganui River Journey. Full of humour and joie de vivre, it is a hugely enjoyable armchair read as well as an essential source of information for anyone intending to walk in New Zealand.

Why are owls regarded either as wise or as harbingers of doom? What gave rise to the fanciful belief that storks bring babies? Why is the eagle associated with victory or the hummingbird with paradise? The answers are here in this engaging book. By re-telling the many legends, beliefs, proverbs and predictions associated with more than 80 birds from many nations, it brings into focus the close – and often ancient – links between humans and these remarkable feathered descendants of dinosaurs. Discover, for instance: - Why the cockerel features on many church spires - The one sacred bird that symbolises life and peace in most cultures - How to dispel bad luck if you see a certain black-and-white bird - The South American 'devil bird' once thought to be a dragon Birds: Myth, Lore and Legend draws on historical accounts and scientific literature to reveal how colourful tales or superstitions were shaped by human imagination based on each bird's behaviour or appearance. It offers a fresh and enchanting perspective on birds across the world.
