Book Synopsis International Relations in Uncommon Places by : J. Beier
Download or read book International Relations in Uncommon Places written by J. Beier and published by Springer. This book was released on 2005-06-10 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The central claim developed in this book is that disciplinary International Relations (IR) is identifiable as both an advanced colonial practice and a postcolonial subject. The starting problematic here issues from disciplinary IR's relative dearth of attention to indigenous peoples, their knowledges, and the distinctive ways of knowing that underwrite them. The book begins by exploring how IR has internalized many of the enabling narratives of colonialism in the Americas, evinced most tellingly in its failure to take notice of indigenous peoples. More fundamentally, IR is read as a conduit for what the author terms the 'hegemonologue' of the dominating society: a knowing hegemonic Western voice that, owing to its universalist pretensions, speaks its knowledge to the exclusion of all others.

Book Synopsis The Place of God in Piers Plowman and Medieval Art by : Mary Clemente Davlin
Download or read book The Place of God in Piers Plowman and Medieval Art written by Mary Clemente Davlin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Probing spatial questions about God posed by Piers Plowman, the author of this interdisciplinary study turns to pictorial evidence-the use of religious space and relationships within such space in English art of the same period. The Place of God in Piers Plowman and Medieval Art is not only a study of the sense of God and of the relationship between God and creatures in the great religious poem, but also an analysis of art works of the high Middle Ages, especially English manuscript illuminations, in their placement of God. Such interdisciplinary analysis historicizes both literature and art, uncovering ways that medieval people imagined God and the understandings that they would have been able to bring to reading and viewing religious art.

Book Synopsis The Political Lives of Dead Bodies by : Katherine Verdery
Download or read book The Political Lives of Dead Bodies written by Katherine Verdery and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 1999-04-07 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1989, scores of bodies across Eastern Europe have been exhumed and brought to rest in new gravesites. Katherine Verdery investigates why certain corpses—the bodies of revolutionary leaders, heroes, artists, and other luminaries, as well as more humble folk—have taken on a political life in the turbulent times following the end of Communist Party rule, and what roles they play in revising the past and reorienting the present. Enlivening and invigorating the dialogue on postsocialist politics, this imaginative study helps us understand the dynamic and deeply symbolic nature of politics—and how it can breathe new life into old bones.
