Download or read book You Lost Me written by David Kinnaman and published by Baker Books. This book was released on 2011-10-01 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Close to 60 percent of young people who went to church as teens drop out after high school. Now the bestselling author of unChristian trains his researcher's eye on these young believers. Where Kinnaman's first book unChristian showed the world what outsiders aged 16-29 think of Christianity, You Lost Me shows why younger Christians aged 16-29 are leaving the church and rethinking their faith. Based on new research, You Lost Me shows pastors, church leaders, and parents how we have failed to equip young people to live "in but not of" the world and how this has serious long-term consequences. More importantly, Kinnaman offers ideas on how to help young people develop and maintain a vibrant faith that they embrace over a lifetime.
Book Synopsis Beginning to Read the Fathers by : Boniface Ramsey
Download or read book Beginning to Read the Fathers written by Boniface Ramsey and published by Paulist Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now revised, Beginning to Read the Fathers is an introduction to the church's earliest writers, preachers and theologians. It presupposes no more knowledge on the part of the reader than that the fathers existed and that their ideas might be important and perhaps even interesting. The book does not restrict itself to such topics as Christology and ecclesiology but includes other areas like martyrdom and prayer, which were highly important in shaping the mind and heart of the early church. The material in this book is arranged thematically and follows a natural progression. Each chapter attempts to give a real taste of the subject in question by providing numerous selections from the writings of the fathers, some of them classic statements and some relatively obscure. Fathers from nearly all periods and traditions are cited. The author's opinions, although not nonexistent, are subordinate to the presentation of the fathers themselves. The work was written in a nontechnical style to be read both by beginners and by people with some expertise in the field. It concludes with suggestions for a patristics reading program for those who wish to pursue a study of the fathers in more depth. +

Book Synopsis Generation Ex-Christian by : Drew Dyck
Download or read book Generation Ex-Christian written by Drew Dyck and published by Moody Publishers. This book was released on 2010-10-01 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Young people aren’t walking away from the church—they’re sprinting. According to a recent study by Ranier Research, 70 percent of youth leave church by the time they are 22 years old. Barna Group estimates that 80 percent of those reared in the church will be “disengaged” by the time they are 29 years old. Unlike earlier generations of church dropouts, these “leavers” are unlikely to seek out alternative forms of Christian community such as home churches and small groups. When they leave church, many leave the faith as well. Drawing on recent research and in-depth interviews with young leavers, Generation Ex-Christian will shine a light on this crisis and propose effective responses that go beyond slick services or edgy outreach. But it won’t be easy. Christianity is regarded with suspicion by the younger generation. Those who leave the faith are often downright cynical. To make matters worse, parents generally react poorly when their children go astray. Many sink into a defensive crouch or go on the attack, delivering homespun fire-and-brimstone sermons that further distance their grown children. Others give up completely or take up the spiritual-sounding “all we can do is pray” mantra without truly exploring creative ways to engage their children on matters of faith. Some turn to their churches for help, only to find that they frequently lack adequate resources to guide them. This is where Generation Ex-Christian will lend a hand. It will equip and inspire parents, church leaders, and everyday Christians to reawaken the prodigal's desire for God and set him or her back on the road to a dynamic faith. The heart of the book will be the raw profiles of real-world, young ex-Christians. No two leavers are identical, but upon close observation some categories emerge. The book will identify seven different kinds of leavers (the postmodern skeptic, the drifter, the neopagan, etc.) and offer practical advice for how to connect with each type. Shrewd tips will also intersperse the chapters alerting readers to opportunities for engagement, and to hidden landmines they must sidestep to effectively reach leavers.

They want a church that is relevant and offers a vision of the Divine. This book places the church in context with consumerism, freedom of choice, war and terror, and the impact of technology now dominating the worldview of young adults. Drawing upon the proven success at St. Hilda s House in New Haven, CT, this book provides stories and narratives from young adult interns, who are involved in its mission and ministry."

Now it has developed into a proof of concept that Youths can build a STRONG CHURCH. GenerationS is a mindset-shifting, heart-changing book that shows you how to raise up generations of young people in your church to build His kingdom. After over 20 years, this youth church, operated by youths, for youths to reach youths, still has an average age of 22. “I see a great struggle in the global churches in keeping the young people… At Heart of God Church, things are different. After ministering in the biggest churches and conferences all over the world, what I’ve witnessed at Heart of God Church is unlike anything I have experienced before. What Heart of God Church has wonderfully modelled for us all should not only be applauded and admired; it should also be reproduced everywhere.” – JOHN BEVERE, International bestselling author The Bait of Satan, Co-Founder, Messenger International “On my most recent visit, one of my band was so wowed by the environment of the visual/video tech room – where he saw not just one operator at each station, but three... (This) was so impressive – there was one operator, one trainer and one trainee. These were people in their mid to high teens, some as young as 12 or 13... Considering the amount of responsibility a video/visual team carries in a large service, and how much specialised technical skill there is to learn... he was amazed. There was a beautiful trust being placed in these young people... and ultimately it’s the Jesus model of discipleship.” – MATT REDMAN, Two-time Grammy Award winner, singer-songwriter and worship leader Bonus #1: Contributors and ‘Inside Stories’ Read 1,000+ word contributions from 13 other contributing writers that provide an ‘inside look’ and 360º view of HOGC.

Book Synopsis Young Catholic America by : Christian Smith
Download or read book Young Catholic America written by Christian Smith and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2014-02-04 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Best Review at the Catholic Press Association Convention Studies of young American Catholics over the last three decades suggest a growing crisis in the Catholic Church: compared to their elders, young Catholics are looking to the Church less as they form their identities, and fewer of them can even explain what it means to be Catholic and why that matters. Young Catholic America, the latest book based on the groundbreaking National Study of Youth and Religion, explores a crucial stage in the life of Catholics. Drawing on in-depth surveys and interviews of Catholics and ex-Catholics ages 18 to 23--a demographic commonly known as early "emerging adulthood"--leading sociologist Christian Smith and his colleagues offer a wealth of insight into the wide variety of religious practices and beliefs among young Catholics today, the early influences and life-altering events that lead them to embrace the Church or abandon it, and how being Catholic affects them as they become full-fledged adults. Beyond its rich collection of statistical data, the book includes vivid case studies of individuals spanning a full decade, as well as insight into the twentieth-century events that helped to shape the Church and its members in America. An innovative contribution to what we know about religion in the United States and the evolving Catholic Church, Young Catholic America is the definitive source for anyone seeking to understand what it means to be young and Catholic in America today.
Book Synopsis Young People and Church Since 1900 by : Naomi Thompson
Download or read book Young People and Church Since 1900 written by Naomi Thompson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-08-04 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the Sunday School pioneers saw a need in their communities in the late eighteenth century, their response provoked a 200 year movement. These early Sunday Schools met a clear social need: that for basic education. By the 1960s, they faced rapid decline – a rigid institution amidst societal change. Over recent decades, Christian youth work has emerged as a response to further youth decline within churches. Many youth workers engage with young people’s self-perceived needs by delivering open-access youth provision in their local communities alongside more specifically Christian activities. Tensions emerge over whether the youth worker’s role is to serve community or church needs, with churches often emphasising the desire to see young people in services. Drawing together historical and contemporary research, Young People and Church Since 1900 identifies patterns and change in young people’s engagement with organised Christianity across time. Through this, it provides a unique analysis of the engagement and exclusion of young people in three key time periods, 1900–1910, 1955–1972, and the present day. Whilst much commentary on religious decline has focused on changes external to churches, this text draws out the internal decisions and processes that have affected the longevity of Christianity in England. This book will be of interest to researchers and scholars of young people and Christianity in the twentieth century and today, as well as youth ministry students and practitioners and those interested in youth decline in churches more widely.
Book Synopsis Springs of Living Water by : David Samuel Young
Download or read book Springs of Living Water written by David Samuel Young and published by Herald Press (VA). This book was released on 2008 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David S. Young approaches the need for renewal with a spiritual thrust and an active servant leader style. He gives systematic help in how to be a healthy church with an urgent mission. This manual helps a church cultivate its spiritual life, train leaders, and focus efforts in ministries which express its identity and call. Rather than the pastor working solo, a renewal team is trained that gets the entire congregation involved. The team works with the church to look at its strengths and discover new life. Rather than using a diagnostic model of church renewal, find out what is wrong and fix it, the process uses an affirmative model, find out what is right and builds upon it. This book is written from David Young's experience in pastoring in the local church, teaching in seminaries, leading cluster work, writing two books in the field, and keeping one foot planted in a church working on renewal. Young has learned, developed, lived, taught and tested this model.
