Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two dozen select prayer poems to learn from and live with Poetry and prayer are closely related. We often look to poets to give language to our deepest hopes, fears, losses—and prayers. Poets slow us down. They teach us to stop and go in before we go on. They play at the edges of mystery, holding a tension between line and sentence, between sense and reason, between the transcendent and the deeply, comfortingly familiar. When Poets Pray contains thoughtful meditations by Marilyn McEntyre on choice poems/prayers and poems about prayer. Her beautifully written reflections are contemplative exercises, not scholarly analyses, meant more as invitation than instruc¬tion. Here McEntyre shares gifts that she herself has received from poets who pray, or who reflect on prayer, believing that they have other gifts to offer readers seeking spiritual companionship along our pilgrim way. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing from the poetry of generations of esteemed writers Gary Bouchard shows how poems often express the longings of the human heart as a kind of prayer. Emily Dickinson, Rev. Rowan Williams, Pope John Paul II, Christina Rossetti, Robert Frost, and Fr. Kilian McDonnell, OSB, among others, offer readers an inspiring path to reflect upon and pray with poetic verse. Arranged under six engaging themes, each selection uses the words of poets as vehicles to prompt “heaven in ordinary” or to praise like “exalted manna”; to find the right “paraphrase” for your own soul or maybe sense your “soul’s blood”; to muster up from your grief or anger “reversed thunder” or dare to articulate from your own personal anguish “Christ-side-piercing spear.”

Book excerpt: This major new poetry collection from bestselling poet and priest Malcolm Guite features more than seventy new and previously unpublished works. At the heart of this collection is a sequence of twenty seven sonnets written in response to George Herbert’s exquisite sonnet 'Prayer', each one describing prayer in an arresting metaphor such as ‘the church's banquet’, ‘reversed thunder’, ‘the Milky Way’, ‘the bird of paradise’ and ‘something understood’. In conversation with each of these, Malcolm’s sonnets offer profound insights into the nature of communion with God in all circumstances and conditions. Recognising that all poetry is a pursuit of prayer, After Prayer also includes forty five more widely ranging new poems, including a sonnet sequence on the seven heavens.

Originally written in 1899, Rilke wrote them upon returning to Germany from his first trip to Russia. He intended these poems as icons of sorts, gestures that could illumine a way for seekers in the darkness. As Rilke here writes, "I love the dark hours of my being, for they deepen my senses." Translated by Mark S. Burrows.

Book excerpt: Lababidi's new volume brings a dynamic flow to his subject that is both timeless and very contemporary; his insights summon us to a spiritual but entirely undogmatic journey. -Abdal Hakim Murad, author of Travelling Home and Dean of Cambridge Muslim College * Learning to Pray is a masterpiece. Yahia Lababidi is a lyrical genius touched by the genies. I wonder how he is able, time after time, to work such miracles-authentic and truly beautiful. -Peter Zsoldos, Ambassador of the Slovak Republic and poetry translator * Despite its insistence that the mystic "swoons, / defenseless / in the face of beauty," the real mysticism of Lababidi's book of longing is not private but shared: the speaker swoons, and leaves the reader defenseless in the face of beauty. -H. L. Hix, American poet, academic and editor * In lean, luminescent verse, Lababidi has created a portal into quiet worlds, guiding us to be our best selves. He reminds us of the richness of the stilled and savored. In difficult times, his poems help the reader to summon courage and beauty. -Carla Power, author of Prodigal Son and former Newsweek correspondent * Lababidi believes that there is a common denominator between the philosopher and the poet, both of whom struggle to build a bridge between two worlds, the world of the visible and the world of the invisible, and here writing becomes a form of prayer. -Osama Esber, Syrian poet, publisher and translator

Book excerpt: George Herbert (1593-1633) and R.S. Thomas (1913-2000), each a major English poet and an Anglican priest, lived in very different times, one before the Scientific Revolution, the Enlightenment, and industrialization, and one following. Yet the two men and their poetry bear striking resemblances: Both loved nature and music, both were pacifists, and both struggled with the claims of faith, the nature of the spiritual life, and the recurrent silences of God. This book demonstrates that when their lives and poems are studied side by side, each man enhances our understanding of the other. The first essay deals with their sense of calling as priests and poets. The work then explores topics that relate to their roles as parish priests: ministry, the Bible, the Eucharist, and prayer. Several essays follow dealing with broader questions of the human condition: faith, sin, love, reason and science, and nature. The work concludes by considering their poems about Christmas, Good Friday, and Easter.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, A PRAYER AS A POEM FOR EACH DAY, gives everyone a spiritual connection with the lifeline of God. Although these poems seem to be primarily for the Christian but you will find that much of the meaning of the words concentrate on the individual as being compassionate and doing the right thing in this world relationship with one and another. The rhyming of the words is like a musical background. Some of the poems help the reader to cope with the hurts and torments of their inner self and understanding the pains of their fellowman. It is prudent that we fundamentally deal with one day at a time to simplify our lives and we should pray daily. This book will be an excellent guideline. Each poem is a story emphasizing the virtues of goodness as tools to resolve problems and to find peace in the spiritual world. I'm Richard A. Dixon, author of this book, A PRAYER AS A POEM FOR EACH DAY, and in this AUTHOR BIO it will give you a genuine insight of a perfect example of a compassionate heart that was initiated by an early foundation of living in a Christian atmosphere with my Grandparents. My religion is my driving force. I have formally written three other books as a series of Spiritual poems. My Bachelor of Science has also helped me in my current writing endeavor. My conclusion is a poetic reminder: This book is not just to read for a day or a week or a month or even a year, this is for a lifetime to build your character and to bring your heart spiritual cheer. PRAY EVERYDAY OF YOUR LIFE TO CONFRONT THE WORLD OF SIN PRAY AND ACQUIRE HOPE AND DIRECTION PRAY AND LIVE UNTIL THE END.

Book excerpt: Old Testament scholar Walter Brueggemann describes preaching as "a poetic construal of an alternative world." He says that the purpose of such preaching is "to cherish the truth, to open the truth from its pervasive reductionism in our society, to break the fearful rationality that keeps the news from being new." In JUST PRAY MORE!, author Joretta Klepfer preaches through a collection of poems and re!ections that attempts to do what all poets do: to help us see with new spiritual eyes and have, in Jesus' words, "ears to hear." I pray that the Lord will open your ears to hear through this volume. --The Rev. John P. Chandler, Leader of www. spencenetwork.org and author of Praying New Beginnings: Mining the Torah for Daily Leadership Guidance and several other books on prayer and leadership.Prayer is conversation with God. Captured in the pages of this book, people speak to God through a wide array of emotions. As you read, God joins the conversation. The presence of God in these conversations can challenge and comfort. The variety of prayers and the biblical references make these conversations usable for quiet times or for devotional sharing. Robert Frost s realistic depictions of rural life, especially of New England in the early twentieth century, are beautifully paired with the art created by Grandma Moses, the artist who epitomizes contemporary folk art. The result is a treasure to be enjoyed the whole year long. In spring, we give thanks for the natural and spiritual joys of the season. Moses s illustrations complement Frost s descriptions of the flowers, trees, bees, and other sights and sounds, which evoke a time of renewal and rebirth with illustrations that depict a place of quiet contemplation and endless possibility. A Prayer in Spring is a wonderful gift for lovers of Frost, Moses, poetry, and folk art, as well as for Easter baskets, birthdays, new babies, or for children and adults who can t wait for the season."

An international range of established and new scholars in literary studies and theology offer unique contributions to the neglected study of poetry in relation to prayer. Part I addresses the relationship of prayer and poetry. Parts II and III consider these and related ideas from the point of view of their implementation in a range of different authors and traditions, offering case studies from, for example, the Bible, Dante, Shakespeare and Herbert, as well as twentieth-century poets such as Thomas Merton, Denise Levertov, W.H. Auden and R.S. Thomas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the 1979 revolution, the Iranian government set out to Islamize society. Muslim piety had to be visible, in personal appearance and in action. Iranians were told to pray, fast, and attend mosques to be true Muslims. The revolution turned questions of what it means to be a true Muslim into a matter of public debate, taken up widely outside the exclusive realm of male clerics and intellectuals. Say What Your Longing Heart Desires offers an elegant ethnography of these debates among a group of educated, middle-class women whose voices are often muted in studies of Islam. Niloofar Haeri follows them in their daily lives as they engage with the classical poetry of Rumi, Hafez, and Saadi, illuminating a long-standing mutual inspiration between prayer and poetry. She recounts how different forms of prayer may transform into dialogues with God, and, in turn, Haeri illuminates the ways in which believers draw on prayer and ritual acts as the emotional and intellectual material through which they think, deliberate, and debate.
