We all know someone who suffers from mental illness. It may be a family member, friend, neighbour, or colleague. Now or in the future, it might be you. Here, for the first time, ten celebrities share their experiences of conditions including depression and anxiety, bipolar disorder and OCD, eating disorders and body dysmorphia. From Premiership footballer Dean Windass, to TV presenter Trisha Goddard, their candid first-person accounts detail the day-to-day reality of living with a mental health disorder, as well as the nervous breakdowns, stays in psychiatric hospitals, and suicide attempts. They also show that, ultimately, mental illness need not limit achievement, happiness, and fulfilment in life. These frank and honest stories help us to better understand mental illness, offer practical coping strategies, and give encouragement and solace for everyone out there who feels they are suffering alone. What’s Normal Anyway? shows that nobody is immune from mental ill health and shares powerful messages of positivity and hope. Contributors include: Bill Oddie, Alicia Douvall, Alastair Campbell, Stephanie Cole, Kevan Jones, Dean Windass, Trisha Goddard, Charles Walker, Tasha Danvers and Richard Mabey.

Book excerpt: *As heard on BBC Radio 4 Woman's Hour* *A Blackwell's and Waterstones Best Popular Science Book of 2022* 'Excellent ... one of those rare pop-science books that make you look at the whole world differently' The Daily Telegraph ***** 'Riveting' Mail on Sunday ***** 'Captivating' Guardian, Book of the Day 'Compelling' Observer Sarah Chaney takes us on an eye-opening and surprising journey into the history of science, revisiting the studies, landmark experiments and tests that proliferated from the early 19th century to find answers to the question: what's normal? These include a census of hallucinations - and even a UK beauty map (which claimed the women in Aberdeen were "the most repellent"). On the way she exposes many of the hangovers that are still with us from these dubious endeavours, from IQ tests to the BMI. Interrogating how the notion and science of standardisation has shaped us all, as individuals and as a society, this book challenges why we ever thought that normal might be a desirable thing to be.

Book excerpt: Statistics are just as vital to understanding political science as the study of institutions, but getting students to understand them when teaching a methods course can be a big challenge. Statistics for Political Analysis makes understanding the numbers easy. The only introduction to statistics book written specifically for political science undergraduates, this book explains each statistical concept in plain language—from basic univariate statistics and the basic measures of association to bivariate and multivariate regression—and uses real world political examples. Students learn the relevance of statistics to political science, how to understand and calculate statistics mathematically, and how to obtain them using SPSS. All calculations are modeled step-by-step, giving students needed practice to master the process without making it intimidating. Each chapter concludes with exercises that get students actively applying the steps and building their professional skills through data calculation, analysis, and memo writing.

Recent cutting-edge research shows that human intestinal microbiota influence metabolism, appetite, energy, hormones, inflammation, and insulin resistance. Because gut microflora plays a central role in weight management, losing weight is much more than cutting calories, fat, or carbs. When the trillions of live bacteria in our digestive tract—the gut microbiome—are balanced, excess pounds melt away and we feel revitalized. A leading authority on digestive health and the gut microbiome, Dr. Gerard E. Mullin shares a proven, science-based program to restore and retain weight loss by achieving a balanced gut flora in The Gut Balance Revolution. He reveals how to stifle the fat-forming, disease-promoting gut bacteria, reseed your gut with good fat-burning ones, and fertilize those friendly flora with just the right foods to reboot, rebalance, and renew your health—and lose weight for good. It's all grounded in hard science and his over 20 years of clinical experience with patients in his medical practice. Dr. Gerry Mullin's trailblazing program provides: • Research: The latest, up-to-date frontline science behind how balancing your gut flora can burn fat and restore health • Reboot, Rebalance, Renew: Step-by-step meals plans, food charts, plus 50 delicious, easy recipes • Rev Up: An exercise routine for each phase of the process • Real Life: Bona fide success stories of people who seamlessly lost up to 40 pounds—and kept it off!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sexual Bargaining in the Digital Era follows the evolution of genders/sexualities and so on away from their Old Normal (ON) pattern, which prevailed during the Agricultural Age and the Industrial Age, and into the New Normal (NN) pattern which is currently surfacing in concert with an emerging Digital Era. ON was based on the ancient traditional script governing how women, men, children ought to behave within the spheres of genders/marriages/families/relationships/sexualities. Over the centuries, ON eventually modified into the familiar 1950s’ style (nuclear) patriarchal, cisgender, husband/wife/with children and family. And now that style itself is fading away into NN. NN is based not on script but on improvisation—it is essentially a continual work-in-progress. To make it function the partners engage in ongoing negotiation governed by the principle that “everything is negotiable except the principle that everything is negotiable.” NN has thus far been pursued most frequently by persons (New Lights) who are educated and relatively advantaged. ON has been pursued mostly by persons (Old Lights) who are less educated and relatively less advantaged. ON is also strongly embraced by persons of a traditional religious bent—persons who tend to be rigid and unbending in their religious views. Currently, they tend to be extremely right-wing evangelicals and extremely right-wing Catholics. Importantly, their political clout far exceeds their relatively modest numbers within the larger population. In brief, the shift from ON to NN is a move away from the sanctity of a particular structure to the primacy of persons engaged in ongoing processes of inventing (and reinventing) certain arrangements of genders/marriages/families/relationships/sexualities, enabling them to fulfil their needs for primary (intrinsic/emotional) satisfactions such as liking, loving, empathy, companionship, sexual and so forth. Among other things, this shift replaces the preeminence of the historic binary or cisgender approach—heterosexual, legal, children and so on—in favor of the diversity/variety/multiplicity approach which incorporates under one conceptual umbrella all persons of whatever genders, sexualities and so on. All persons are thus engaged in a common struggle to achieve personal satisfactions as well as contribute to the Greater Good.

Book excerpt: This is a memoir of my life, and how God used death, loss, alcoholism, sickness, anger, and divorce to transform me through His redemptive work. I reveal how early in my life I tried to control all the events that occurred, but this only brought more pain, hurt, and heartache. I was going down a dead-end path that was leaving me stagnate in my spiritual life, and broken on the inside. However, God got my attention, and offered a way out of all the distress that I was going through. He offered me hope, love, and forgiveness, and taught me how to use what I had gone through to help others who are hurting and feeling hopeless. My life story is a living testimony of God’s love, grace, and transforming power through the cross. He took the ugliness and dysfunction that was in my life, and turned it into a beautiful gift from which others may benefit. My prayer is that others who read my story may see their value as God’s chosen child, and come to experience the most precious relationship there is.

With a focus on the fundamentally holistic nature of young children’s development, and emphasising the role of play, and the emotional and physical environment throughout, the book shows its reader how to maximise each and every opportunity for learning when caring for the under threes. Throughout the book, the following features help the reader to reflect on, and develop their own practice: ‘Case Studies’ put key topics in context ‘Reflective Questions’ help the reader test and consolidate their knowledge of key topics ‘Review your Practice’ boxes invite the reader to reflect on their own practice ‘Further Reading and Research’ suggestions inspire independent study in key areas. The book is also supported by a companion website featuring links to relevant videos and articles, as well as an interactive flashcard glossary.
