This book was released on 2009-02 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quotes from "Country Boy" Chapter 1 "There are no insignificant events in our lives; it's just that we can't often perceive the significance. It's difficult to detect the pattern when you are just one thread in the tapestry." Chapter 2 "I think children today have too much social pressure on them, and too many organized activities. If every kid could occasionally lie on pine needles and watch the clouds go by, there might be less need for psychiatrists and drugs." Chapter 3 "I will never forget the first time I entered a GI mess hall. It was breakfast time and the cooks were preparing scrambled eggs from powdered eggs or something of that nature. The griddle was about a half-acre in area, in plain view, and was covered with large green bubbles. I have often wondered if Dr. Seuss book, Green Eggs and Ham was inspired by a GI mess hall." Chapter 4 "One of my roommates gave me a ride as far as Stephenville. I spent the night with him and his family, which was something of a revelation. His mother actually believed that the world was flat, and that the sun revolved around the Earth " Chapter 5 "A few minutes earlier John F.Kennedy had been a liberal, tax-and-spend Democrat, but we were Americans and he was our president and we were mad as hell, and I think a little bit scared, about what had happened." Chapter 6 "In Families Anonymous we learned about tough love and letting go.We learned that we were not in control of our children's lives, shouldn't try to be, and shouldn't feel bad because we weren't." "It would be interesting to observe the results of a president who had Carter's moral values and Nixon's political acumen, but perhaps the two attributes are mutually exclusive." "In the midst of all this madness one day I remembered something I had heard years earlier while watching Saturday morning cartoons with my son. Yogi Bear said, 'Boo Boo, as you grow older you will learn that the deeper in the woods you get, the more nuts you will find.' In the 70's the energy industry was pretty deep in the woods." Chapter 7 "Everything considered, I believe that I am in the top 1 percent of all the people who have ever lived. I state this not as a matter of pride, but as a matter of gratitude. My meager contribution is described in this book. It is obvious that most of my good fortune is the result of something greater than me." Eugene E. "Duke" Ellington is a 75 year-old retired natural gas engineer who resides in Kerrville, Texas. Duke was born in Iowa in 1933, and raised in Moultrie, Georgia, where he graduated high school in 1950. He spent almost four years in the Air Force during the Korean War, and was honorably discharged in 1954. He attended Texas College of Arts and Industries in Kingsville, Texas, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering in 1958. After graduation, he worked as an engineer for Conoco for 15 years, then as a consultant at Purvin & Gertz, Inc. in Dallas for almost 24 years. In this book, the author describes the incredible changes that have taken place during his life. The book is a rich fabric of the interwoven threads of his personal life, social and economic changes, race relations, political events and technological advances. Young people will be amazed, older people will reminisce, and all will laugh and cry, and think.

Book excerpt: We all make important, and crucial decisions at some point in life. Some decisions can truly be life changing. A month after I turned sixteen years old, I was given the opportunity to leave my country, and go north in the continent to the great United States of America. It was not an easy thing to do by any means, neither was it to decide over. After seeking God’s answer in prayer for a few days, I decided to leave my known life behind to venture into the unknown, trusting in God alone to make it safe to my destination. As I made the decision to leave my country, that also included leaving behind the most beautiful girl I had known. I was risking my life in many ways trying to reach the “Land of the Free, the Home of the Brave” with only one purpose in my heart. I wanted nothing more than to become a successful man in order to have something to offer to the girl I considered to be the love of my life. This was my one, and only reason for leaving my country. However, as the day for my departure approached, the strange feeling that I was going to end up with a broken heart at the end of it all became very overwhelming each day, and even more so during the entire journey. Although I hoped that was not going to be the case, I wanted God’s will to be done above all else. I believed that God had a reason for taking me away from her, my country, my friends and family at the time He did. If He did not want me to go to America the way I did, He simply would have said so when I asked if He wanted me to go. It took twenty-five days from the day I left my home in El Salvador until the day I arrived at my new home in Orange County, California. There were a number of dangers that I faced during a three week period, going across four different countries, traveling for more than three thousand miles. While my faith was tested in different ways each day, my mind, and my body were also put to the test in more ways than I expected. It all began on the eleventh day of February in the year two thousand and two. A group of fifteen individuals full of hope, and dreams of a better future decided to begin a journey that would forever change their lives. Although unique, my story is not the only one for there are millions more that have come before, and after me. This, however, is the story of my Journey to America.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir Ian Botham and the Ashes are as closely intertwined as willow and leather or Merv Hughes and his moustache. You simply cannot think of one without the other. In this book, Sir Ian takes you on a ride through a lifetime's relationship with cricket's oldest and most treasured prize, revealing just how it has shaped his life and how he has helped to turn it into the contest it is today. From the moment he first watched the likes of Ken Barrington stride to the wicket in jaw-jutting defiance to the day he flayed Australia's bowling attack around Headingley as if playing with his mates in the park, and then onwards to his role in commentating on what was arguably the finest series of the lot, in 2005, Sir Ian has a rich and varied connection with the Ashes, and he tells all here. The Ashes is a series that has provided incredible highs and heartbreaking lows for English and Australian fans alike over the past 35 years. Sir Ian has often been at the centre of the roller-coaster ride. Whether it is his account of his days as England's dogsbody in 1977 in Melbourne or the story of his refusal to let Bob Willis bowl downwind until he was angry enough to skittle the Aussies in 1981, all is revealed in depth in Botham's Book of the Ashes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a remarkable career that has spanned nearly fifty years, Wini Moranville has witnessed the American restaurant landscape transform from the inside out. At just shy of fourteen, she began a ten-year stretch working in a kaleidoscope of quintessential midwestern eateries of the time. Moranville’s hands-on experiences weave a vivid tapestry of the American restaurant landscape in the 1970s and 1980s. In the mid-1990s, the tables turned as Moranville became a prolific food and wine writer for national publications, as well as the dining critic for the Des Moines Register and dsm Magazine. Amidst the vast changes that have occurred over the years, Love Is My Favorite Flavor underscores the timelessness of what it is we seek when we entrust restaurateurs with our hard-earned money and our hard-won leisure time. Dining out may have changed dramatically since the 1970s, but the joys of being in the hands of people who care deeply about our time at their tables have not.

Book excerpt: From renowned playwright Jackie Alexander comes a captivating, masterfully told coming-of-age novel of a young man struggling through his haunting past to discover and save himself. Stigmatized at birth due to his interracial parentage and reared in a household poisoned by domestic abuse, Kevin Matthews is orphaned at age ten after losing his mother to a violent attack at the hands of his father, who is jailed for the crime. Raised by his paternal grandfather, a Baptist Minister who instills values of the church as a base for recovery, Kevin is content with life in rural Louisiana during the 1970s until disturbing news surfaces regarding his mother's attack—news that sheds doubt on his father's guilt, and leads Kevin to relive painful memories. As Kevin grows up, the emotional scars of his childhood cast dark clouds over his relationships with women, and his life begins to spiral out of control. Faced with losing all that he loves, Kevin is forced to confront the man who holds the key to his salvation, his father. Our Daily Bread is a rich and compelling coming-of-age story of a young boy whose journey takes us from the bayous of Louisiana to the big city lights of New York and Paris. Examining family, race, religion, and the lingering effects of domestic abuse, Our Daily Bread questions what defines one's legacy: the surroundings we are born into, or the choices we make thereafter.
