Book excerpt: Every Christian claims to pray. Every pastor tells the congregation that prayer meetings are the 'hub' of local church life. It is the view of the author, after decades as a Christian and pastor, that few Christians understand what prayer is and even fewer do not realise that prayer meetings as we have them today have no sure basis in biblical reality. Indeed, it is the author's researched view that traditional prayer meetings are invalid. We must all test the spirits... the book challenges Christians to do just this by setting church traditions aside and seeing what God really says. Are you truly a faithful believer, or not?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I have discovered that there is a serious misunderstanding when it comes to prayer. I had an awakening that it was much, much more than what I had been led to believe. I received a challenge around the middle of the year of our Lord 1999 from a member of the Rehoboth Baptist Church named Djuana Jackson Tomlin who, at the time, was wrestling on how to pray effectively. She came to me as her pastor and asked, Will you teach us about prayer? I somewhat ignored her and said within my spirit, Everybody know how to pray. All she needed to do is get on her knees at night before she goes to bed and pray. That was my understanding because that was the way I was brought up, as a child. My parent taught me before I went to bed to say my prayers. I would pray, Lord, lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep. If I should die before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take. Now bless Mama and bless Daddy, amen. Evidently she had been doing that and more, but she was still unfulfilled. So she just kept on troubling me with the question, When are you going to teach us how to pray? This went on for some four to five months. Upon her persistence to be taught on prayer, a study of teaching on prayer began in December 1999 on the topic of What is Prayer and the preaching on prayer began in January 2000 with a seven-part series of sermons entitled Barriers to Answered Prayer. The Holy Spirit continued to inspire sermons on prayer for ten months. The teachings on prayer continued for better than eleven months. What God revealed to me concerning prayer revolutionized my life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever wondered how prayer works? Have you ever wished you were better at praying? Have you ever been at a loss for words to pray? This is not a book that attempts to answer all your questions on prayer. On the contrary, the author acknowledges upfront that prayer is a mystery for which there is no magic formula. There are Biblical principles that teach much about prayer, and God's spiritual spokespersons have offered insight. But God is God, and prayer is in the realm of His unfathomable ways and workings. Rather, this is a book that invites you to come alongside the author and delve into the practice of prayer. It contains reflections on varied prayer matters that are based on exploring principles about prayer and trying various ways to pray. It is the fruit of the author's entreating God to teach her to pray. Since much of this entreating occurred while walking with her son through his cancer battle and now as she grieves his passing, the author's insights are presented as one questioning pilgrim desiring to help another. The book's premise is that we do not have to understand prayer to pray. We learn to pray by praying. The more we pray, the more natural praying therefore becomes. Hence, suggestions and tools are offered to facilitate praying. Whether you are relatively experienced with prayer, brand new, or somewhere in between, you are invited to ponder these prayer matters and to implement those suggestions for "doing prayer" that appeal to you. Because, ultimately, while we may not know the intricate workings of prayer this side of Heaven, one thing we do know is... Prayer Matters!

Book excerpt: "The intelligent child of God must be driven to say, 'I must pray, pray, pray. I must put all my energy and all my heart into prayer. Whatever else I do, I must pray.'" Stunning and forthright, R.A. Torrey's "little book on prayer" is a reflection of the writer who once had it said about him, "One wonders if there has ever lived a man who did so many things well for Christ." Torrey deals with the key elements of life-changing prayer, such as praying in the Spirit, abiding in Christ, obstacles to prayer, the best times to pray, seeking revival through prayer, and more. Torrey outlines a practical strategy for living life in conversation with God. Moody Classics Of all the factors influencing our spiritual growth and development, pivotal books play a key role. Learning from those who have walked the path and fought the fight brings wisdom and strengthens resolve. And hearing the familiar chords of kingdom living sung by voices from other times can penetrate cultural barriers that limit our allegiance to the King. To this end, Moody Publishers is honored to introduce the first six volumes in what is to be an ongoing series of spiritual classics. Selected for their enduring influence and timeless perspective, these new editions promise to shape the lives of spiritual pilgrims for generations to come.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost everyone has an opinion about what prayer is and how it ought to work. But for many, prayer produces far less than the saints say it should. While some surveys suggest that up to 90 percent of us believe in prayer enough to do it daily, that lofty statistic is tempered by the sobering claim that average believers only pray for eight to twelve minutes a week. If that's not a red warning flag that prayer has a serious public relations problem, what is? Praying When Prayer Doesn’t Work is a thoughtful— often witty—account of the author's journey to find prayer’s elusive promise for himself. A pastor for thirty years, Jack uses humor, plenty of secondary resources, scripture, real-life stories, and his own unique insights to illustrate how both routine and exceptional circumstances may be used to trigger meaningful, ongoing, and productive prayer. While challenging harmful assumptions (dogma) with unconventional observations, Getz also looks at prayer's four public relations problems, identifies the perfect environment for prayer, and examines the three critical attitudes necessary to pray with great effect. Also, the wisdom and helpful suggestions found in the useful study guide can teach sincere seeker's of the truth how to get personal with God and make praying a choice, not a chore.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Making of a Prayer Warrior was written in response to the many people who not only asked me for handouts at the end of a presentation at prayer conferences, but also send me prayer requests from time to time. The book aims to address the rudiments of prayer, using the Bible as the main reference. I tried to cover in simple basic terms enough information to take the ‘baby’ Christian from a life of no prayer to being a mighty prayer warrior. I have sought to address topics such as: What is prayer, Biblical examples of answered prayers, personal preparation for prayer, becoming a prayer warrior, the prayer group, types of prayers, and how to get your prayers answered. I have written from my own experience as a praying person and can say with much confififi dence that God is waiting on us to call unto Him. He still stands on His word in 2 Chronicles 7:14 – “If my people, which are called by My name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven ,and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.”

Book excerpt: The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord, But the prayer of the upright is His delight. – Proverbs 15:8 Prayer is the key that unlocks all the storehouses of God’s infinite grace and power. All that God is, and all that God has, is at the disposal of prayer; but we must use the key. Prayer can do anything that God can do, and since God can do anything, prayer is omnipotent. No one can stand against the person who knows how to pray, who meets all the conditions of prevailing prayer, and who really prays, and if they are willing to pay the price. The price is prayer, much prayer, much real prayer, prayer in the Holy Spirit. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many contemporary philosophers assume that, before one can discuss prayer, the question of whether there is a God or not must be settled. In this title, first published in 1965, D. Z. Phillips argues that to understand prayer is to understand what is meant by the reality of God. Beginning by placing the problem of prayer within a philosophical context, Phillips goes on to discuss such topics as prayer and the concept of talking, prayer and dependence, superstition and the concept of community. This is a fascinating reissue that will be of particular value to students with an interest in the philosophy of religion, prayer and religious studies more generally.

Praying as God desires requires considering what God has revealed about it. As we give prayer our careful attention, we gain greater understanding of what he intends it to be. Constable details the different forms of communication God invites us to use. He identifies the counterfeits that pass for prayer, discusses the conditional nature of prayer, and explains why some prayers seem to go unanswered.
