I have no apology to offer for inflicting yet one more story about Bolshevism on a long-suffering public. I am sure that, with the exchange of prisoners, and the return to England of hun dreds of men and women lately detained in Russia, my book will not be the last. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dawn in Russia: Or Scenes in the Russian Revolution I have not attempted in this book to do more than describe some of the scenes which I witnessed in Russia during the winter of I905 - Igo6, while I was acting there as special correspondent for the Daily Cbrouicle. For the most part, the descriptions are given in the same words which I wrote down at the time, either for my own memory or for the news paper. But the whole has been re-arranged and rewritten, while certain scenes have been added for which a daily paper has no room. I have also inserted between the scenes a bare outline of the principal events that were happening elsewhere, so that the Significance of what I saw may be more easily understood, and the dates become something better than mere numbers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When we think of our country, we feel proud of it for other and better reasons than its great size. We know how its extent compares with that of other nations; we know that the United States covers an area almost equal to that of Europe, and, more favored than that Grand Division, is situated on the two great highways of commerce, the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Europe is as far from the latter, as Asia is from the former; and these highways, powerful means toward creating prosperity, remain at the same time barriers whereby nations that find greater delight in the arts of war than in those of peace, are restrained from disturbing our national progress. At the beginning of this twentieth century the nations upon which depends the world's peace or war, happiness or misfortune, are the United States, Great Britain, Germany, France, Austria-Hungary, Italy, Russia, Japan, and in the near future China. Here we see that Europe, although little larger in area than the United States, is represented by seven nations, Asia by two, and the Western Hemisphere by one which by its institutions stands for peace and progress, for law and order. Hence we, its citizens, are known all over the world as Americans.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Russia Russia in Europe, however, with the exception Of Poland and Finland, is a country with one religion and one language: that is, the czar and his government recog nize and admit no other. That is the cause Of the perse cution Of the Jews, four fifths of whom dwell in the Southwest Of Russia in an area covering square miles, which is sometimes mentioned as the jewish terri tory. Every succeeding czar has tried to make all his subjects think and act in the manner prescribed by him. The process is known as Russianizing. And goes on incessantly in its different stages. Immediately after the conquest of a country, its people are assured that their religion, institutions, and language, shall be respected: the only difference is that the native Officials are displaced by Russians. This continues until Russian rule is firmly established, and no one dreams of resisting the czar. Then the Russian language displaces the native tongue, and if disturbances occur, the military is called in to inflict a terrible punishment. The loss of the native language carries with it that Of old institutions, and when the people have submitted to their fate, it is the turn of their religion. The Russian is in no hurry; he has a conviction that time has no changes in store for his empire, hence he bides his time, and is likely to succeed in his purpose. This process is now carried on in Central Asia where Russian power has found its greatest expansion in modern times. It is but fair to admit that Russian absorption there has been highly beneficial because robber tribes were reduced to law and order. The Revolution and the welfare of the masses in and out of Russia are by far too important to me to allow any personal consider ation for the Communists I have met and learned to respect to obscure my sense of justice and to cause me to refrain from giving to the world my two years' experience in Russia. We saw, as those educators in Moscow who counseled us where to go said they wanted us to see, the worst as well as the best of Soviet life. And we also saw a fair sample of what lies in between. To read Mr. Sloan's descriptions and judgments is to vividly live over again the experiences of that period. Book excerpt: Excerpt from From a Russian Diary, 1917-1920 When the revolution broke out in Russia I was living in a provincial town, which since the war had become of considerable importance. For some time before February 1917 the news papers had been daily scanned with ever-increasing anxiety. Not only did it daily become more evident that there was much treachery and treason, but it seemed that the only one who could have put a stop to this state of affairs lacked either the wisdom or the courage, or both. Each time that the name of a newly appointed minister was read out people looked at each other in amazement, and then came the never-varying exclama tion, What are they aiming at A revolution? Even before the date I speak of thoughtful Russians had foreseen a revolution from below, but they hoped it would be staved off until the close of the war. The revolution which they now spoke of was one which they thought might prove merely a palace revolution. Book excerpt: The Marquis de Custine's unique perspective on a vast, fascinating country in the grip of oppressive tyranny In 1839, encouraged by his friend Balzac, Custine set out to explore Russia. His impressions turned into what is perhaps the greatest and most influential of all books about Russia under the Tsars. Rich in anecdotes as much about the court of Tsar Nicholas as the streets of St Petersburg, Custine is as brilliant writing about the Kremlin as he is about the great northern landscapes. An immediate bestseller on publication, Custine's book is also a central book for any discussion of 19th century history, as - like de Tocqueville's Democracy in America - it dramatizes far broader questions about the nature of government and society.

Kate turned an admiring glance upon it, as she wrapped up the sheets Of paper, and cleared away the shavings 'in which it had been packed. Dora, with less cere mony, examined it, and turned it round till the British Islands came in View. See, she ex claimed, what a tiny space England fills on the globe, compared with other countries! They are reproduced practically without change. It was believed that a more comprehensive under standing Of the whole subject might be given if other chapters were added briefly describing Siberia and certain conditions and tendencies in Russia itself. These form the remainder of the book. It has been the earnest endeavor to treat the subject with impartiality. Indeed, nothing has been essayed except to give the reader a faithful report of what any inquiring traveller may see and hear for himself if he Should take the same journey. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mainsprings of Russia In calling this book the Mainsprings of Russia, I am conscious of having omitted several of the most important mainsprings of Russian life: chief among them its commerce and industry. The subject is so large that, had I dealt with it at all, there would have been no room for anything else in a book of this size. Also, as far as the actual facts are concerned they are to be found clearly stated in Dr. Kennard's excellent Russian Year Book. Nor have I attempted to deal with the Army and the Navy, which I consider to be factors which are likely to be dealt with by experts, since they cannot afford to be altogether neglected by foreigners. There is another subject I have omitted - it is not, it is true, a mainspring of Russian life; but it is a sore spot and a question of burning vital interest-i mean the Jewish question.
