Book excerpt: An understanding of environmental gradients (physical, chemical, hydrological, and biological) is a prerequisite to the accurate delineation of wetland boundaries. Presenting the wide-ranging views of academicians, environmentalists, policy makers, consultants, planners, engineers, hydrologists, biologists, geochemists, ecologists, and conservationists, Wetlands: Environmental Gradients, Boundaries, and Buffers focuses on current topics and research related to wetland delineation; summarizes the main issues of concern; and provides recommendations on research needs. In addition to integrating the most important research and theoretical aspects, this book includes a strong prescriptive component, providing practicing professionals with specific guidance on defining the true dimensions of a wetland area.
Download or read book Making Ontario written by David Wood and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2000-04-06 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The colony that became Ontario arose almost spontaneously out of the confusion and uncertainty following the American Revolution, as a quickly chosen refuge for some 10,000 Loyalists who had to leave their former homes. After the War of 1812 settlers began to spread throughout the inter-lake peninsula that was to become southern Ontario and by the middle of the nineteenth century expansion had led to a diversifying agriculture and an increasingly open farming landscape that replaced a mature forest ecosystem. The scale of the change from forest to cropland profoundly affected what had been for many decades a rich environment for life forms, from large herbivores down to microscopic creatures. In Making Ontario David Wood shows that the most effective agent of change in the first century of Ontario's development was not the locomotive but settlers' attempts to change the forest into agricultural land. Wood traces the various threads that went into creating a successful farming colony while documenting the sacrifice of the forest ecosystem to the demands of progress, progress that prepared the ground for the railway. Making Ontario provides a detailed focus on environmental modification at a time of great changes. It is liberally illustrated with analytical maps based on archival research.

Book Synopsis Northern Forested Wetlands Ecology and Management by : Carl C. Trettin
Download or read book Northern Forested Wetlands Ecology and Management written by Carl C. Trettin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-19 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forested wetlands are a major component of northern landscapes, important both for their ecological functions and their socioeconomic values. Historically, these lands have been used for timber and fiber products, hunting, fishing, trapping, food gathering, and recreation. There are many questions about the use and management of these lands in the future, particularly with respect to forest products, hydrology and water quality, plant and wildlife ecology, landscape dynamics, and wetland restoration. Northern Forested Wetlands: Ecology and Management provides a synthesis of current research and literature. It examines the status, distribution, and use of these wetland resources. The book focuses on understanding the role of wetlands in the landscape and on how to manage these wetlands and sustain their important functions. This is a primary reference text for the study and management of northern forested wetlands, providing a forum for information discovered by researchers and managers from many nations.

Download or read book A Catalogue of Databases Related to Ontario Agro-ecosystems written by Elizabeth A. Snell and published by [Hull, Que.] : Canadian Wildlife Service. This book was released on 1994 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To improve the basis for federal environmental assessments and management decisions regarding agricultural land use in Southern Ontario, an inventory was taken of regional and provincial databases related to land use, farming operations and practices, and wildlife and wildlife habitat distributions. Eleven areas of interest were defined and researched. Contacts were made with many federal, provincial, and non-governmental organizations involved with land use and conservation efforts and information was gathered via correspondence, telephone, or personal interviews. Emphasis was put on databases that are referenced geographically and thereby amenable to spatial analysis. A brief description of the contents, spatial extent and resolution, volume, structure, and availability is provided for each of 98 databases.

Riley and published by Aurora : Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, Southern Region, Science and Technology Transfer. This book was released on 1994 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ecology of the settled landscapes of eastern North America is the subject of a growing body of research by conservation biologists and restoration and landscape ecologists. This review introduces readers to recent studies dealing with the subject, and with the landscape changes that may sustain viable natural ecosystems into the future. The paper also relates those studies to the landscapes and development patterns of settled southern Ontario and suggests some of the lessons that might be applied to the planning and management of those landscapes and their land uses.
