Just a few yards from the ship stands the Kissing Sailor statue. If he had been a former enlisted Midway sailor, he would have probably kissed a girl in every port. While countless books tell the stories of high-ranking naval officers, such as Captain John Paul Jones, Admiral David Farragut, and Admiral Chester Nimitz, this book tells the story of the Navy as seen through the eyes of an enlisted sailor who served on the Midway during the Cold War. Armed with a swab and a bucket, he bumbled and stumbled his way on the ship in search of knowledge and adventure on the high seas and lands of the Far East, with the hopes that he wouldn’t fall overboard before he got to the next exciting port. About the Author Joe Brulotte served as an Aerographer’s Mate on the USS Midway (CV-41) for two years. He began the study of weather at the age of 15, worked as a weather specialist in the U.S. Navy for eight years, and has continued the study of meteorology and weather over the past fifty years. He holds a degree in science and mathematics, as well as a Master’s Degree in U.S. Military History.

Book excerpt: Three days after the last Marine Corps helicopter lifted off from Saigon, the author and his Navy shipmates became the very last American military presence of the Vietnam War. This is their untold story, the important final chapter in the history of that wars bitter end. When, as a newly commissioned officer, Jonathan Malay and his shipmates on the U.S. Navy destroyer USS Benjamin Stoddert (DDG-22) sailed away from Vietnamese coastal waters on May 3, 1975, they became the last American military presence of the Vietnam War. He tells their story in a gripping personal narrative that includes history, adventure, a love story, and the tale of a bold humanitarian action that saved over a hundred and fifty lives. A sea story at its core, the author colorfully captures the feelings of the period, describing the demands of life at sea and the excitement of visits to exotic ports in the western Pacific and Indian oceans at the same time a tragic end to the war was becoming inevitable. Finally, in telling the harrowing tale of the ships operations in Vietnams coastal waters as Saigon fell, he draws from multiple sources ranging from the ships terse deck log entries to the passion of his letters sent home to his wife in Hawaii. This book reveals not just what the author saw, but how he felt about leaving the War in Our Wake.

Book excerpt: “A thoroughly researched and engrossingly readable history” of gay men and women in the American armed forces by the author of And the Band Played On (The New York Times Book Review). Published during the same year the American military instituted Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, and eighteen years before President Barack Obama repealed it, Conduct Unbecoming is a landmark work of social justice and a searing indictment of the military establishment’s historic bigotry toward its gay servicemen and women. Randy Shilts’s eye-opening book describes the bravery, both exceptional and everyday, not only of gay soldiers throughout history, but also of gay men and women serving in our modern military. With each anecdote and investigation, Shilts systematically dismantles the arguments against allowing gays to serve in the military. At once a history of the American military and an account of the gay rights movement, Conduct Unbecoming is a remarkable testament to the progress achieved for gays in the military—and a revealing look at how far we have yet to go.

Book excerpt: The gripping account of the riot aboard the USS Kitty Hawk—and the first mutiny in U.S. Naval history In 1972, the United States was embroiled in an unpopular war in Vietnam, and the USS Kitty Hawk was headed to her station in the Gulf of Tonkin. Its five thousand men, cooped up for the longest at-sea tour of the war, rioted--or, as Troubled Water suggests, mutinied. Disturbingly, the lines were drawn racially, black against white. By the time order was restored, careers were in tatters. Although the incident became a turning point for race relations in the Navy, this story remained buried within U.S. Navy archives for decades. With action pulled straight from a high-seas thriller, Gregory A. Freeman uses eyewitness accounts and a careful and unprecedented examination of the navy's records to refute the official story of the incident, make a convincing case for the U.S. navy's first mutiny, and shed new light on this seminal event in American history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ebe McCabe’s book opens during the Great Depression. During World War II, dissatisfaction with urban life caused his father to return to his rural hometown with his young family. From there Ebe fulfilled a dream of his parents by attending the Naval Academy, where he learned the “Duty, honor, country” maxim. After graduation, he served on a destroyer, two fleet submarines, two nuclear powered fleet ballistic submarines, and the Atlantic Submarine Force Commander’s staff. That included deployments to the Mediterranean and to the Western Pacific, and seven Polaris submarine patrols. After his active naval duty, he served in the Navy Reserve. Ebe’s civilian career began with a nuclear power plant supplier subsidiary’s nuclear controls engineering section. That was followed by over twenty years as a federal regulator of civilian nuclear power, including response to the Three Mile Island nuclear accident. Part Four of his book presents his personal assessment of nuclear war and nuclear power, with a primary basis being his naval and civilian experience and training. Besides his career, Ebe’s book addresses controversies like the Kent State tragedy, war, marriage, immigration, capitalism vs. socialism, equality, and religion.

Book excerpt: It’s Your Duty is a memoir about Gary A. Goeschel’s early naval experience showing he lived the sailor’s life at sea with astounding responsibility encountering danger and adventure. The book summons up stories, revealing an image into an inexperienced sailor’s development, and presents his reflections. Stories about his association with the men he served that forged him into the man he became. WWII experienced leaders gave lessons and guidance, used mean talks, and provided the consequences for the author not meeting requirements, for him, that resulted in embarrassments and painful incidents. The stories also include what a sailor wouldn’t disclose in letters home. Not telling family and friends he could have died when confronting violent seas, nor disclose more threatening dangers. A sailor wouldn’t describe his drunken conditions and the mischief he made. The stories embrace the enlisted sailor’s point of view, a depiction deficient in most naval histories.
