Book excerpt: This is a discount Black and white version. Some images may be unclear, please see BCCampus website for the digital version. This book was born out of a 2014 meeting of earth science educators representing most of the universities and colleges in British Columbia, and nurtured by a widely shared frustration that many students are not thriving in courses because textbooks have become too expensive for them to buy. But the real inspiration comes from a fascination for the spectacular geology of western Canada and the many decades that the author spent exploring this region along with colleagues, students, family, and friends. My goal has been to provide an accessible and comprehensive guide to the important topics of geology, richly illustrated with examples from western Canada. Although this text is intended to complement a typical first-year course in physical geology, its contents could be applied to numerous other related courses.
Book Synopsis Tectonics of Sedimentary Basins by : Cathy Busby
Download or read book Tectonics of Sedimentary Basins written by Cathy Busby and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-12-07 with total page 1034 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investigating the complex interplay between tectonics and sedimentation is a key endeavor in modern earth science. Many of the world's leading researchers in this field have been brought together in this volume to provide concise overviews of the current state of the subject. The plate tectonic revolution of the 1960's provided the framework for detailed models on the structure of orogens and basins, summarized in a 1995 textbook edited by Busby and Ingersoll. Tectonics of Sedimentary Basins: Recent Advances focuses on key topics or areas where the greatest strides forward have been made, while also providing on-line access to the comprehensive 1995 book. Breakthroughs in new techniques are described in Section 1, including detrital zircon geochronology, cosmogenic nuclide dating, magnetostratigraphy, 3-D seismic, and basin modelling. Section 2 presents the new models for rift, post-rift, transtensional and strike slip basin settings. Section 3 addresses the latest ideas in convergent margin tectonics, including the sedimentary record of subduction intiation and subduction, flat-slab subduction, and arc-continent collision; it then moves inboard to forearc basins and intra-arc basins, and ends with a series of papers formed under compessional strain regimes, as well as post-orogenic intramontane basins. Section 4 examines the origin of plate interior basins, and the sedimentary record of supercontinent formation. This book is required reading for any advanced student or professional interested in sedimentology, plate tectonics, or petroleum geoscience. Book Synopsis Carboniferous and Permian Gas Resources of the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin, Interior Plains by : J. E. Barclay
Download or read book Carboniferous and Permian Gas Resources of the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin, Interior Plains written by J. E. Barclay and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first part of this paper describes the discovered gas resources of the major Carboniferous and Permian gas plays in flat-lying strata beneath the western Canadian interior plains. It includes information on the regional geological framework and stratigraphy as well as a prediction for undiscovered gas resources based on geological and statistical analysis. The second part uses selected information from part I and applies an investment decision methodology to estimate the quantity of economically recoverable resources under a set of assumptions pertaining to technology, costs, and future economic parameters.
Book Synopsis Devonian Gas Resources of the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin by : G. E. Reinson

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first part of this study describes the petroleum geology of Devonian gas exploration plays in the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin and provides an assessment of remaining natural gas potential. It includes descriptions of the resource assessment procedure, the regional stratigraphy and depositional setting/morphology of the study area, geology and play potential of individual established plays in the districts of the Basin, and a geological analysis of conceptual plays. The second part is an economic analysis that uses selected information from the first part, applying an investment decision methodology to estimate the quantity of economically recoverable resources under a set of assumptions pertaining to technology, costs, and future economic parameters.
Book Synopsis Uppermost Cretaceous, Post-Colorado Group Gas Resources of the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin, Interior Plains by : Anthony P. Hamblin
Download or read book Uppermost Cretaceous, Post-Colorado Group Gas Resources of the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin, Interior Plains written by Anthony P. Hamblin and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report documents an assessment of uppermost Cretaceous to Tertiary gas resources in the interior plains of the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin. The resources are described in terms of detailed geological play analysis and numerical assessment of undiscovered gas potential using a technique termed the discovery process model, which employs the volume and discovery sequence of individual pools or plays, within a natural population of pools or plays, to predict undiscovered potential. The analysis evaluated 12 mature and 2 immature established plays, and identified one conceptual play. The geology of the plays is outlined in a manner that can be used as a guide for exploration, and each play is designated by geological formation, reservoir, or trap type.
Book Synopsis Principles of Sedimentary Basin Analysis by : Andrew Miall
Download or read book Principles of Sedimentary Basin Analysis written by Andrew Miall and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended as a practical handbook for those engaged in the task of analyzing the paleogeographic evolution of ancient sedimentary basins. The science of stratigraphy and sedimentology is central to such endeavors, but although several excellent textbooks on sedimentology have appeared in recent years little has been written about modern stratigraphic methods. Sedimentology textbooks tend to take a theoretical approach, building from physical and chemical theory and studies of mod ern environments. It is commonly difficult to apply this information to practical problems in ancient rocks, and very little guidance is given on methods of observation, mapping and interpretation. In this book theory is downplayed and the emphasis is on what a geologist can actually see in outcrops, well records, and cores, and what can be ob tained using geophysical techniques. A new approach is taken to stratigraphy, which attempts to explain the genesis of lithostratigraphic units and to de-emphasize the importance of formal description and nam ing. There are also sections explaining principles of facies analysis, basin mapping methods, depositional systems, and the study of basin thermal history, so important to the genesis of fuels and minerals. Lastly, an at tempt is made to tie everything together by considering basins in the con text of plate tectonics and eustatic sea level changes.
