Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A group of niobium-base alloys is being considered for addition to the Department of Defense Refractory Metals Sheet Rolling Program. Good weldability is one of the requirements. Two alloys under consideration are B- 66, and FS-85. A third alloy, C-129 was also included in this evaluation. Samples of these three alloys were obtained for a brief weldability evaluation to determine whether the alloys met the target properties established by the Materials Advisory Board, Refractory Metals Sheet Rolling Panel-Alloy Requirements and Selection Group. Bend tests made on base-metal samples showed that all alloys met the target properties for base metal. Bend tests of welds made in a vacuum-purged controlled-atmosphere chamber showed that only the welds in the FS-85 alloy possessed the desired target properties.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aging studies of the three weld conditions were essentially completed and the aging kinetics compared. The B-66 .125 inch thick sheet was received and the evaluation of the effect of thickness initiated. Several conclusions have developed. (1) Interdendritic spacings of the weld metal are more strongly influenced by power input and cooling rate during welding than by chemical composition. (2) As-welded bend transition is dependent on welding speed. The faster the speed the lower the bend transition temperature for the condition studied. (3) The kinetics of aging in the temperature range of 1600 - 2200F is strongly influenced by interdendritic spacing, hence by weld parameters. The larger the interdendritic spacing the more sluggish the aging reaction. (4) A double aging reaction has been found in the B-66 alloy, one which occurs in the weld zone and a second which involves the heat affected zone. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The welding characteristics of 4 niobium alloys, FS-85, B-66, D-36 and Cb-752, in two thicknesses were the subject of this investigation. These alloys in sheet form were welded by the tungsten inert gas, electron beam and resistance spot welding processes. The welding variables of current, voltage, speed and environment were studied to determine their effects on weld properties and to correlate properties with weld 4icrostructure. A study of the effect on weld ductility of post weld aging and applying an oxidation protective coating was included in this program. The effect of tungsten arc or electron beam welding these alloys was to increase the ductile to brittle transition temperature. The increase was greatest for B-66 and Cb-752 and least for D-36 and FS-85. Generally, electron beam welds in a given alloy were more ductile and slightly stronger than tungsten arc welds. Aging tungsten arc welds at 1800 and 2000 F caused an additional increase in transition temperatures. (Author).

Book excerpt: Many of the important developments in the joining of columbium, molybdenum, tantalum, tungsten, and graphite are summarized. Much of the subject matter is devoted to the brazing processes, but diffusion and solid-state bonding are covered also. The particular properties which recommend the refractory metals and graphite to aerospace applications are discussed. Adverse properties which limit the use of these materials or which must be overcome by using special precautions also are mentioned. Typical filler metals used to join the refractory materials for low- as well as high-temperature service conditions are covered. The information was gathered from the current literature on joining and from the open DMIC files.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation was made of the welding characteristics of three commercial columbium base alloys, FS82, D31, and F48. Tungsten inert gas, electron beam, spot, and flash butt welding methods were included in this investigation. The effect of the welding variables travel speed, shielding gas composition and purity, filler metal additions, preheat and post heat were studied. Thermal cycles were measured in the fusion zone and heat affected zone of TIG welds to help explain mechanical properties and microstructure on the basis of physical metallurgy of each alloy. The effect of welding on all alloys investigated was to increase the ductile to brittle transition temperature. This temperature was increased 200 F for FS82, 800 F for D31, and 500 to 800 F for F48 over that of the as-received wrought sheet. Of several post heat treatments investigated those most beneficial in lowering the transition temperature of welds were; 2000 F for 4 hours for FS82, 2100 F for 24 hours for D31, and 2500 F for 4 hours for F48. The electron beam welding process consistently produced more ductile welds than the TIG process. (Author).

Book excerpt: Reported progress on the electron-beam welding of commercially pure W indicates that sound crack-free welds can be made if the weld is not restrained during welding. Although the data are not all consistent, welds which are smooth and have minimum fusion and heat-affected zone width should be the strongest and most ductile. Tensile strengths are equivalent to the base metal near the recrystallization temperature but are appreciably lower at room temperature. The ductile-to-brittle transition temperatures for electron-beam-welded tungsten are above that of the base metal. The impact resistance of electron-beam-welded tungsten is very low. Electron-beam welding of tungsten parts should be thoroughly evaluated on production prototypes before specifying its use. (Author).
