Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcome to the club that no one ever wants to join but so many of us end up needing. We’re so sorry that you’re here. Based on her own experience with grief—the author’s partner died when both were in their late twenties—and those of other Grief Club members, Janine Kwoh uses brief writings, illustrations, and creative diagrams to explore the wide range of emotions and experiences that grief can encompass. For anyone who has lost a loved one or who is close to someone who is grieving, Welcome to the Grief Club is a book of solace, connection, hope, and reassurance. It addresses with empathy and honesty the aspects of grief that so many of us experience but that aren’t widely discussed: the variety and volatility of emotions—sadness, anger, guilt, joy; the physical symptoms of grief; and how grief isn’t linear, but it does change and soften over time. It affirms that there is truly no right or wrong way to grieve and assures us that the things we feel that surprise us or seem strange are often common and always valid. Humor helps us to survive, and the book uses a lighthearted approach to cover powerful topics, like supremely unhelpful things that people say to those who are grieving, grief trigger bingo, and everyday acts of resilience. This book is a companion that says, I see you and you are not alone, from one grieving person to another. It is a gentle reminder to give yourself permission to grieve for as long as—and in whichever ways—you need.

Book excerpt: What if no one ever had to die alone? In 1923, in the mountains of eastern Peru, a stranger approaches eleven injured men shortly after a battle has ended. He assists only six of the wounded, all of whom die shortly after he sees to their needs; then, without a word or glance toward the other five, he leaves. The remaining men survive the journey home, telling the story of the man with bright-blue eyes and a scar upon his right hand. The tale becomes the legend of El Padre, passed down to their children and their children's children. As time goes by, the legend spreads beyond Peru, crossing decades and continents. In 2008, New York investigative reporter Sam Noll has a front-page political scandal in the works-that is, until his editor reassigns him to chronicle the El Padre sightings. Although he's frustrated, Sam slowly lets the new article become personal and persuades a quirky colleague, Ira Nevins, to assist him in the search. The discoveries lead Sam to some dangerous destinations and bring him new revelations about El Padre's intentions-and hopefully his true identity. When Sam uncovers a strange pattern to the sightings, however, it places him on the direct path of a man many believe to be some type of angel. Although Sam is determined to solve the mystery, he may be facing something more sinister than he originally believed-and finding the answer may be the last thing he ever does.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When organizations are committed to gender equality, what gets in the way of their achieving it? How and why do well-intentioned people end up reinforcing sexism? Katie Lauve-Moon examines these questions by focusing on religious congregations that separated from their mainline denomination in order to support women's equal leadership. In Preacher Woman, Lauve-Moon concentrates on congregations affiliated with the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship (CBF). Women are enrolling in Baptist seminaries at almost equal rates as men and CBF identifies the equal leadership of women as a core component of its collective identity, yet only five percent of CBF congregations employ women as solo senior pastors. Preacher Woman explores how congregations can be committed to ideas of gender parity while still falling short in practice. Lauve-Moon investigates how institutional sexism is upheld through both unconscious and conscious biases. In doing so, she demonstrates that addressing issues of sexism and gender inequality within organizations must extend beyond good intentions and inclusive policies.
