Book Synopsis The First World War by : Manfried Rauchensteiner
Download or read book The First World War written by Manfried Rauchensteiner and published by Böhlau Wien. This book was released on 2014-07-24 with total page 1063 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The well-respected historian Manfried Rauchensteiner analyses the outbreak of World War I, Emperor Franz Joseph's role in the conflict, and how the various nationalities of the Habsburg Monarchy reacted to the disintegration of this 640-yearold empire in 1918. After Archduke Franz Ferdinand"s assassination in Sarajevo in 1914, war was inevitable. Emperor Franz Joseph intended it, and everyone in Vienna expected it. How the war began and how Austria-Hungary managed to avoid capitulation only weeks later with the help of German troops reads like a thriller. Manfried Rauchensteiner"s book is based on decades of research and is a fascinating read to the very end, even though the final outcome, the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Dual Monarchy, is already known. Originally published in German in 2013 by Böhlau, this standard work is now available in English.

Book Synopsis Humans, Horses and Events Management by : Katherine Dashper
Download or read book Humans, Horses and Events Management written by Katherine Dashper and published by CABI. This book was released on 2021-03-12 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Horses are perhaps the most common non-human animal to feature in planned events, but although there is considerable research on equestrian sport, there is virtually none on equestrian events. This book begins to address this gap, using the National Championships of the Icelandic Horse as an extended case study to explain in depth the process of managing an event, as well as the larger theoretical implications of events management. Drawing on diverse viewpoints and theoretical perspectives, the book draws wider comparisons to connect events management to larger themes in the social sciences, such as human-animal relations; nationalism; place branding; event impacts; event experience; and inclusion and exclusion. The book is a contribution to two fields. In relation to human-animal studies, it focuses on how the Icelandic horse breed is marketed and celebrated through top-tier competition; whereas from an events management perspective, it considers the role of the event in community building, the practical and theoretical aspects of running a sustainable equestrian event, and the issues that arise in multispecies event contexts.

Download or read book Mit Israel auf dem Weg durch die Wüste written by Christian Daniel Kupfer and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2011-09-20 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The wilderness narratives Ex 15:22–17:7 and Num 11:1-20:13 are shaped by striking repetitions as well as breaks in style and content. This study describes the continued interaction between the various text signals and the ‘co-operative reader’ who attempts to achieve a coherent reading. This type of an ideal reader alludes to the concepts of reception theorists W. Iser and U. Eco and is applied here for the benefit of the narratives of the Old Testament. A second main part 4demonstrates systematically the narrative tools of guiding the reader within the wilderness narratives. This approach emphasises the dynamic character of the interpretation of the text. In this way, the author re-evaluates for example text structures, blanks or duplicates by weighing up their significance and relevance for the reading process.
Download or read book Begabungsforschung und Begabtenförderung: der lange Weg zur Anerkennung written by Kurt A. Heller and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2014 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis The Concept of Duality in Joyce Carol Oates's Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been? by : Andreas Keilbach
Download or read book The Concept of Duality in Joyce Carol Oates's Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been? written by Andreas Keilbach and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2009-08 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 1,3, University of Freiburg (Englisches Seminar), course: HS The Coming-of-Age Story in America, language: English, abstract: In the 'coming-of-age story' the major conflict of the story lies in the adult world. Rather than focusing on the change of the youth, in the latter story type the youth character is exposed to a confrontation with the adult world. In Oates's story this confrontation consists of the fact that the youth world (Connie) is getting overpowered by the adult world (Arnold Friend). At the beginning of the story, in the title, the reader is confronted with a twofold question pointing in two directions. "The very title of the story calls attention to duality: a future (where are you going) and a past (where have you been)." Therefore, in this term paper the following thesis will be examined: "The concept of duality is a basic feature of the 'coming-of-age' story." It will be shown that in Oates's "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?" one distinctive feature of creating the story type of the 'coming-of-age' story is the concept of duality. While following the twofold pattern of analyzing the representation of the youth world and the adult world, further major techniques of creating duality in Oates's story will be discovered, such as irony, ambiguity, grotesque, parody, allusions, deception, and allegory.

Book Synopsis Diagramming Devotion by : Jeffrey F. Hamburger
Download or read book Diagramming Devotion written by Jeffrey F. Hamburger and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2020-09-21 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the European Middle Ages, diagrams provided a critical tool of analysis in cosmological and theological debates. In addition to drawing relationships among diverse areas of human knowledge and experience, diagrams themselves generated such knowledge in the first place. In Diagramming Devotion, Jeffrey F. Hamburger examines two monumental works that are diagrammatic to their core: a famous set of picture poems of unrivaled complexity by the Carolingian monk Hrabanus Maurus, devoted to the praise of the cross, and a virtually unknown commentary on Hrabanus’s work composed almost five hundred years later by the Dominican friar Berthold of Nuremberg. Berthold’s profusely illustrated elaboration of Hrabnus translated his predecessor’s poems into a series of almost one hundred diagrams. By examining Berthold of Nuremberg’s transformation of a Carolingian classic, Hamburger brings modern and medieval visual culture into dialogue, traces important changes in medieval visual culture, and introduces new ways of thinking about diagrams as an enduring visual and conceptual model.
