Book excerpt: "This series of HANDBOOKS OF LINGUISTICS AND COMMUNICATION SCIENCE is designed to illuminate a field which not only includes general linguistics and the study of linguistics as applied to specific languages, but also covers those more recent areas which have developed from the increasing body of research into the manifold forms of communicative action and interaction. For "classic" linguistics there appears to be a need for a review of the state of the art which will provide a reference base for the rapid advances in research undertaken from a variety of theoretical standpoints, while in the more recent branches of communication science the handbooks will give researchers both an overview and orientation."--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a comprehensive and detailed overview of successful renewable energy projects in the European Union. After the decision of several European governments to change energy policies in favor of renewable energy sources, the number of nuclear power plants as well as overall coal production have decreased significantly already. Conrad Kunze and Sören Becker present recent energy projects that have successfully managed the change towards sustainable energy while functioning within local economies and adhering to the principles of participation, collective property, and ecologic awareness.Using a selection of 15 examples, the authors showcase the already existing parallel universe of 'small alternatives' and argue that, if used properly, renewable energy projects can not only lead the way in the fight against climate change but facilitate societal change on an even larger scale.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Today there is much discussion of the liberation of women," writes Marie-Louise von Franz, "but it is sometimes overlooked that this can only succeed if there is a change in men as well. Just as women have to overcome the patriarchal tyrant in their own souls, men have to liberate and differentiate their inner femininity. Only then will a better relationship of the sexes be possible." It is this timely theme that Dr. von Franz explores in her psychological study of a classic work of the second century, The Golden Ass by Apuleius of Madaura. The novel recounts the adventures of a young Roman who is transformed into an ass and eventually finds spiritual renewal through initiation into the Isis mysteries. With its many tales within a tale (including the celebrated story of Psyche and Eros), the text as interpreted by Dr. von Franz is a rich source of insights, anecdotes, and scholarly amplification.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Froude wrote in 1833 to John Henry Newman that "the present state of things in England makes an opening for reviving the monastic system." Seemingly original words at the time. Yet, monasticism is one of the most ancient and enduring institutions of the Christian church, reaching its zenith during the High Middle Ages. Although medieval monasteries were regularly suppressed during the Reformation and the magisterial Reformers rejected monastic vows, the existence of monasticism has remained within the Reformation churches, both as an institution and in its theology. This volume is an examination of Protestant theologies of monasticism, examining the thought of select Protestant authors who have argued for the existence of monasticism in the Reformation churches, beginning with Martin Luther and John Calvin and including Conrad Hoyer, John Henry Newman, Karl Barth, and Donald Bloesch. Looking at the contemporary church, the current movement known as the "New Monasticism" is discussed and evaluated in light of Protestant monastic history.

An appendix provides an interlinear translation that makes Mahler's superb treatment of texts accessible to readers with little or no knowledge of German."--Jacket.
