Book Synopsis Averroes and the Aristotelian Tradition by : Jan Aertsen
Download or read book Averroes and the Aristotelian Tradition written by Jan Aertsen and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-02-22 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Averroes the philosopher was the Commentator of Aristotle. In this, the project of his life coincided with the perception of his contemporary readers and with the esteem governing four centuries of European Aristotelianism. It has been the purpose of the 4th Symposium Averroicum to contribute to a better understanding of this philosophy: both on the basis of Averroes' works and in the light of his sources. The Symposium, held in conjunction with the 6th Editors Conference of the Averrois Opera, brought together eminent scholars and researchers on Averroes and adjacent areas. Their contributions are presented in four sections: - The Project of Averroes - Averroes and the Hellenistic Commentators - Averroes, the Commentator - Averroes and the Latin Tradition A bibliography of editions and contributions to the text is appended (to date 1998).
Book Synopsis Cardinal Isidore (c.1390–1462) by : Marios Philippides
Download or read book Cardinal Isidore (c.1390–1462) written by Marios Philippides and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-09 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A member of the imperial Palaiologan family, albeit most probably illegitimate, Isidore became a scholar at a young age and began his rise in the Byzantine ecclesiastical ranks. He was an active advocate of the union of the Orthodox and Catholic Churches in Constantinople. His military exploits, including his participation in the defence of Constantinople in 1453, provide us with eyewitness accounts. Without doubt he travelled widely, perhaps more so than any other individual in the annals of Byzantine history: Greece, Asia Minor, Sicily, Russia, Poland, Lithuania, and Italy. His roles included diplomat, high ecclesiastic in both the Orthodox and Catholic churches, theologian, soldier, papal emissary to the Constantinopolitan court, delegate to the Council of Florence, advisor to the last Byzantine emperors, metropolitan of Kiev and all Russia, and member of the Vatican curia. This is an original work based on new archival research and the first monograph to study Cardinal Isidore in his many diverse roles. His contributions to the events of the first six decades of the quattrocento are important for the study of major Church councils and the fall of Constantinople to the Ottoman Turks. Isidore played a crucial role in each of these events.
Book Synopsis Cistercian Architecture and Medieval Society by : Maximilian Sternberg
Download or read book Cistercian Architecture and Medieval Society written by Maximilian Sternberg and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2013-08-15 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Cistercian Architecture and Medieval Society Maximilian Sternberg offers an account of the social functions of the built environment in medieval monasticism. Few medieval monuments hold so privileged a place in the modern imagination as Cistercian abbeys, yet Sternberg suggests, it is precisely our own, peculiarly modern fascination with the idea of 'Cistercian aesthetics' that has hindered a full view of the complex social meanings of their architecture. This book draws attention instead to the practical and symbolic means by which architecture helped the Cistercians to negotiate the dense web of relations that, in actuality, bound them to other spheres of medieval society. It explores the permeability of monastic boundaries, and considers their effectiveness in reconciling a simultaneous need for interaction and distance between monastic communities and these other social spheres.

Book Synopsis Medieval Islamic Economic Thought by : S.M. Ghazanfar
Download or read book Medieval Islamic Economic Thought written by S.M. Ghazanfar and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-06-02 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of papers on the origins of economic thought discovered in the writings of some prominent Islamic scholars, during the five centuries prior to the Latin Scholastics, who include St. Thomas Aquinas. This period of time was labelled by Joseph Schumpeter as representing the 'great gap' in economic history. Unfortunately, this 'gap' is well embedded in most relevant literature. However, during this period the Islamic civilization was one of the most fertile grounds for intellectual developments in various disciplines, including economics, and this book attempts to fill that blind-spot in the history of economic thought.
