Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Police killings of unarmed Black people have ignited a national and international response unlike any in decades. But differing from their civil rights-oriented predecessors, today’s activists do not think that the institutions and values of liberal democracy can eradicate structural racism. They draw instead on a Black radical tradition that, Terrence L. Johnson argues, derives its force from its unacknowledged ethical and religious dimensions. We Testify with Our Lives traces Black religion’s sustained influence from SNCC to the present, reconstructing a radical lived ethics of freedom and justice. Johnson demonstrates that Black Power fundamentally contests liberalism’s abstract understanding of democracy, calling instead for new embodied frameworks to achieve human flourishing and dignity. Black bodies represent the primary form of resistance against violent and oppressive regimes of white supremacy and exploitation, and the individual and collective struggles of Black life bear witness to the dogged determination to cultivate beauty, rage, and joy. Considering the writings of Audre Lorde, Toni Cade Bambara, Stokely Carmichael, Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, and James Baldwin, We Testify with Our Lives makes its case through a new narrative of the evolution of Black radicalism from the civil rights movement through the Movement for Black Lives. It forges new insights into Black Power’s vital contributions to debates on ethics, transnational politics, democracy, political solidarity, and freedom—and its potent resources for the ongoing struggle to build democratic possibilities for all.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The compassionate and redemptive story of a prominent Black woman in the Twin Cities literary community Carolyn Holbrook’s life is peopled with ghosts—of the girl she was, the selves she shed and those who have caught up to her, the wounded and kind and malevolent spirits she’s encountered, and also the beloved souls she’s lost and those she never knew who beg to have their stories told. “Now don’t you go stirring things up,” one ghostly aunt counsels. Another smiles encouragingly: “Don’t hold back, child. Someone out there needs to hear what you have to say.” Once a pregnant sixteen-year-old incarcerated in the Minnesota juvenile justice system, now a celebrated writer, arts activist, and teacher who helps others unlock their creative power, Holbrook has heeded the call to tell the story of her life, and to find among its chapters—the horrific and the holy, the wild and the charmed—the lessons and necessary truths of those who have come before. In a memoir woven of moments of reckoning, she summons stories born of silence, stories held inside, untold stories stifled by pain or prejudice or ignorance. A child’s trauma recalls her own. An abusive marriage returns to haunt her family. She builds a career while raising five children as a single mother; she struggles with depression and grapples with crises immediate and historical, all while countenancing the subtle racism lurking under “Minnesota nice.” Here Holbrook poignantly traces the path from her troubled childhood to her leadership positions in the Twin Cities literary community, showing how creative writing can be a powerful tool for challenging racism and the healing ways of the storyteller’s art.

A powerful look into the Deep South Black community and racial tensions, Curtis Malcolm Monroe Sr.’s prose and verse provide a raw, real perspective on the state of America and the lack of liberty and justice for all. About the Author Curtis Malcolm Monroe Sr. was born in Tuskegee, Alabama, in 1951. He spent much of his youth living in an old shanty house with his single mother and five siblings. He and his siblings would chop wood for heat, eat wild game they caught for their mother to cook, and worked in the cotton fields. When she received enough money, his mother moved their family to a new town, and Monroe went on to graduate from Carver High School, class of 1970, the last class of all Black students. He and his brother went on to join the USAS during the Vietnam War. After the military, Monrow was married and had two sons. After his divorce, he went back to school. Now retired, he spends most of his time writing poems, short stories, and creating art.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On August 14, 2011, when I was in Kandergrund in the Bernese Highlands in Switzerland an important connection became very clear to me. I recognized a spiritual cause for why we are losing part of our youth. I was very shocked. I thought of my children and grandchildren. Since then I have been intensively occupied with this subject. Now I believe that the same spiritual cause is behind many of our problems; specifically the personal problems, in the local churches and the world-wide church. It is the lack of the Holy Spirit. If this is the cause, then we should urgently address this issue. If the cause can be eliminated or considerably reduced, then many problems will become superfluous or will be resolved.

Book excerpt: At some point in every person's life, we will need a miracle from God. It may be for us, a family member, or a troubled child. It might be a mountain of family or financial trouble, or some unseen force that fills us with fear. The late John Osteen has good news for us. We can have a miracle from God, for God is a miracle worker. And He has recorded many of His miracles in His Word, the Bible. Rather than running around searching for needed miracles, Osteen shows us how to put the power of God's Word into daily practice. When we agree with, believe in, and confess the Word of God, miracles reveal themselves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a young age, Elizabeth Nicole walked in darkness while searching for the light. In her young adulthood, she found that light had always been calling her.For some time, things got better for her but there were also struggles, struggles to break free from the darkness that for years she had walked in. Many people have the same struggles; they just have a different name for them. They wander through this life longing to be free but are not sure how to win the fight. Sometimes, it takes years for a stone-cold heart to become softer as the Holy Spirit remolds it and shapes it as He desires. This is what Elizabeth Nicole had experienced. With that experience came much pain from the decisions that she had made. This once faithful Christian who had given up everything to follow Jesus had gone back to Egypt, forgetting her God and the promises He had given.Over twenty years later, Elizabeth went on a fast to seek GodaEUR(tm)s face and see what He had to say, and on Easter Sunday, Testify: A Call to Repentance was finished. This book is a very personal journey that takes the author from bondage to faith and back to bondage, but God did not give up on her. He brought her close to Him again.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Interplay of Things Anthony B. Pinn theorizes religion as a technology for interrogating human experiences and the boundaries between people and other things. Rather than considering religion in terms of institutions, doctrines, and creeds, Pinn shows how religion exposes the openness and porousness of all things and how they are always involved in processes of exchange and interplay. Pinn examines work by Nella Larsen and Richard Wright that illustrates an openness between things, and he traces how pop art and readymades point to the multidirectional nature of influence. He also shows how Ron Athey's and Clifford Owens's performance art draws out inherent interconnectedness to various cultural codes in ways that reveal the symbiotic relationship between art and religion as a technology. Theorizing that antiblack racism and gender- and class-based hostility constitute efforts to close off the porous nature of certain bodies, Pinn shows how many artists have rebelled against these attempts to counter openness. His analyses offer a means by which to understand the porous, unbounded, and open nature of humans and things.

Book excerpt: Encountering God Leads to Spiritual Intimacy and Transformation. Some believe that learning about God is like looking for something inside the refrigerator—the air is cool and you can never find what you’re looking for. Or perhaps the word boring best describes your experience of studying theology? Bible studies about knowing God are often mechanical and systematic. In Go Deeper, Ken Jung provides an alternative way—story theology for experiencing God. Go Deeper invites you to explore your relationship with God by placing yourself into the biblical narratives. By doing so, readers will encounter the God who passionately pursues us with His sovereignty, holiness, presence, grace, and love. The result: we are transformed in the process.
