Book Synopsis Words on the Move by : John McWhorter
Download or read book Words on the Move written by John McWhorter and published by Henry Holt and Company. This book was released on 2016-09-06 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A bestselling linguist takes us on a lively tour of how the English language is evolving before our eyes -- and why we should embrace this transformation and not fight it Language is always changing -- but we tend not to like it. We understand that new words must be created for new things, but the way English is spoken today rubs many of us the wrong way. Whether it’s the use of literally to mean “figuratively” rather than “by the letter,” or the way young people use LOL and like, or business jargon like What’s the ask? -- it often seems as if the language is deteriorating before our eyes. But the truth is different and a lot less scary, as John McWhorter shows in this delightful and eye-opening exploration of how English has always been in motion and continues to evolve today. Drawing examples from everyday life and employing a generous helping of humor, he shows that these shifts are a natural process common to all languages, and that we should embrace and appreciate these changes, not condemn them. Words on the Move opens our eyes to the surprising backstories to the words and expressions we use every day. Did you know that silly once meant “blessed”? Or that ought was the original past tense of owe? Or that the suffix -ly in adverbs is actually a remnant of the word like? And have you ever wondered why some people from New Orleans sound as if they come from Brooklyn? McWhorter encourages us to marvel at the dynamism and resilience of the English language, and his book offers a lively journey through which we discover that words are ever on the move and our lives are all the richer for it.

Book Synopsis Swimming Through the Flotsam in Which We Live and Move and Have Our Being by : George Stade
Download or read book Swimming Through the Flotsam in Which We Live and Move and Have Our Being written by George Stade and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2009-07 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A plague was erupted. The victim suffers a two-month latent period during which he is infectious but shows no symptoms. The virus is spread by aerosol, so that millions of people are soon infected and infectious, but without knowing it. At the "climax" of he disease, there is what a character calls "a rite of distribution." At the climax the victim does what he or she most wanted or feared doing, the idea being that this kind of fear is laced with fascination. As America (like the rest of the world) sinks into chaos, as the Red Deaths kills forty percent of the population, two fiercely antagonistic groups emerge. There's the apocalyptic religious group called Swimmers, because their charismatic leader was first seen swimming out of the Hudson River. The other group jokingly calls itself Our Gang, a very mixed group that has become immune to the plague as a by-product of an experimental treatment of herpes. What they see and do as they hike north from New York City to a farm upstate forms the substance of the novel.

Book Synopsis Conscious Moving by : Christine Caldwell, PHD
Download or read book Conscious Moving written by Christine Caldwell, PHD and published by North Atlantic Books. This book was released on 2024-06-25 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conscious Moving extends from one transformative belief: we feel more human, more empowered, and more ourselves when we live from that place within us—and all around us—that simply moves. And when we examine and trust in the emerging and evolving movement of our minds and bodies, we can better harness the tools needed to expand our creativity, wellbeing, and learning. Body-based psychotherapist, movement specialist, and renowned author-educator Christine Caldwell (Oppression and the Body) offers a radically ambitious mode of somatic awareness and inquiry—and shows how designing our own conscious movement practices can improve not only our own lives, but our relationships, communities, and culture. This anthology explores how movement practices can help us be more present; more grounded and intentional in responding to and working with experiences in the moment; and claim our own bodily autonomy. Caldwell and contributors explore these key benefits and applications in four critical areas: Creativity Contemplation Healing Learning Rooted in both ancient and modern scientific ways of knowing, Conscious Moving imparts fundamental principles and tools applicable to a broad spectrum of fields and professions. Topics explored in partnership with conscious movement practice include: Trauma and Oppression, Isolation and Loneliness, Addiction, Group Therapy, Sexuality, Creative Arts, and Grief. Encouraging each reader to pay attention to—and honor—their own embodied intuition, Conscious Moving is a non-prescriptive guide to accessing body-based wisdom for personal growth, community impact, and widespread social change.

Book Synopsis We Move Our Own Cheese! by : Victor E. Sower
Download or read book We Move Our Own Cheese! written by Victor E. Sower and published by Quality Press. This book was released on 2017-02-21 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever felt that you had a great insight that would benefit your department, division, or organization and found that you seem to be the only one who can see it? Worse yet, has it ever seemed that while you are struggling to pull your idea into consideration, others are actively holding you back? If you just had the power, you think, great things could be accomplished. What is your reaction? Have you and others who suggest new ideas been so beaten down in the past that you simply let the idea go because it isn’t worth the emotional capital to pursue it? If that is the case, and your idea is indeed a good one, who suffers? You? The organization? The organization’s customers? The answer is all of the above. This book is designed to help those with limited positional power to find ways to get their ideas seriously considered. It is also designed to help those with positional power create a culture that encourages ideas that will benefit the organization regardless of their source. Inspired by Spencer Johnson’s classic fable, Who Moved My Cheese?, the authors of this book decided that there was another story that could be told about taking a more proactive, team-based approach to change. We Move Our Own Cheese! is about creating change. As in Johnson’s book, the cheese is a metaphor for what we have in life and what we believe we want more of. In a business context, it represents the business we are in—our current paradigm—and what it gives us. "A cleverly conceived, thought-provoking fable by authors Fair and Sower that provides great insight into how to recognize the need for organizational change, the courage to make changes - and the necessity of taking risks in order for an organization’s survival in today's innovative and highly competitive world. A great read for employees at every organizational level in any industry. I hope that this excellent book will have timely and wide distribution." Richard Bozeman, Author and Inventor; Retired Chief of the Propulsion and Power Division Test Facilities, NASA "It was very clever and thought provoking. I think the book could open up numerous opportunities for consulting and seminars." Peter Birkholz, M.B.A. Managing Partner, Sam Houston Group, LP and Management Consultant, Birkholz Management Co. ZLLC. "The manuscript is very well written. The characters represent very recognizable types in organizations. Their reactions to threat and authority are realistic, making them sympathetic figures. The story is compelling, with exciting plot twists. I couldn’t stop reading until the end. The diary entries are a clever way to help the reader understand the story’s underlying messages. Your prologue and epilogue are thorough and will be very useful for instructors and trainers, especially the list of discussion questions at the end." Dr. Geraldine Hynes, Ph.D. Professor of Business Communication, Sam Houston State University "I thoroughly enjoyed reading the manuscript. The simple, fun way the fable is written captivates the interest of the reader. I love the way the lessons are weaved into the fable and how they are presented, pulled out for emphasis in a book format. The main lesson and contributing lessons are profound and apply to any organization and individuals at a personal level. The diverse characters seem to come to life and the fable highlights the importance of teamwork leveraging the unique skills of the team. In addition, it points out that leadership among team members is fluid and situational. Such a fable can be used in academic and business settings. Academically, it would be valuable for students learn that they are empowered to create the path in front of them and how to be creative to overcome obstacles. In a business environment, it could reinforce for executives the importance of building a culture of innovation." Jerrine Baker, M.B.A. University Lecturer and President-Owner, Majestic Dreams Travel

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: W. G. Sebald meets Maggie Nelson in an autobiographical narrative of embodiment, visual art, history, and loss. How do the bodies we inhabit affect our relationship with art? How does art affect our relationship to our bodies? T Fleischmann uses Felix Gonzáles-Torres’s artworks—piles of candy, stacks of paper, puzzles—as a path through questions of love and loss, violence and rejuvenation, gender and sexuality. From the back porches of Buffalo, to the galleries of New York and L.A., to farmhouses of rural Tennessee, the artworks act as still points, sites for reflection situated in lived experience. Fleischmann combines serious engagement with warmth and clarity of prose, reveling in the experiences and pleasures of art and the body, identity and community.
