Book excerpt: A wrongly accused man must break the law to win his freedom in this tale of the Old West. Even at seventeen years old, Carson Ryan knows enough about cow herding to realize the crew he’s with is about the worst ever. They’re taking the long way around to the Montana prairies, and they’re seriously undermanned. While rounding up strays, Ryan hears gunshots ring out across the range and gallops straight into a U.S. Army raid. He soon learns that the outfit he’s with is nothing but a bunch of murdering cattle rustlers, and the law thinks he’s one of them. Tied up, thrown in jail, and tried by a court that’s more interested in hanging a man than learning the truth, Carson has only two options: escape or die trying.

Book excerpt: A "riveting," "relentlessly engrossing," and "brilliantly researched" investigation of the life of the gun -- its manufacture, its sale, and its impact -- and of our world's hugely complex relationship with firearms. In some places of the world, getting a gun is easier than getting a glass of water. In some parts of the world, an individual is allowed to carry concealed firearms into schools. In some parts of the world, there are more guns than people to shoot them. There are almost 1 billion guns across the globe today, a shocking number that is higher than ever before in history. Each year, 12 billion bullets are produced -- almost two bullets for every person on the planet. And over 300,000 people are shot dead over an average year worldwide. In The Way of the Gun award-winning investigative journalist Iain Overton takes readers on a shocking and eye-opening journey to over 25 cities all across the globe, from Cape Town to Tokyo, from San Pedro Sula to Phnom Penh, along the way encountering people from all walks of life affected by guns: Zionist anti-terror gun trainers; El Salvadoran gangland killers; porn starlets who appear as snipers in triple-X films; and South African doctors soaked in the blood of gunshot victims -- unearthing some hard truths about the terrible realities of war and gun crime. Harrowing and sobering, this riveting expose on the long-reaching and mostly unknown life of a gun is an essential and important book in today's world.

Book excerpt: David Carr was an addict for more than twenty years -- first dope, then coke, then finally crack -- before the prospect of losing his newborn twins made him sober up in a bid to win custody from their crack-dealer mother. Once recovered, he found that his recollection of his 'lost' years differed -- sometimes radically -- from that of his family and friends. The night, for example, his best friend pulled a gun on him. 'No,' said the friend (to David's horror, as a lifelong pacifist), 'It was you that had the gun.' Using all his skills as an investigative reporter, he set out to research his own life, interviewing everyone from his parents and his ex-partners to the policemen who arrested him, the doctors who treated him and the lawyers who fought to prove he was fit to have custody of his kids. Unflinchingly honest and beautifully written, the result is both a shocking account of the depths of addiction and a fascinating examination of how -- and why -- our memories deceive us. As David says, we remember the stories we can live with, not the ones that happened.

Book excerpt: A Tokyo college student’s discovery and eventual obsession with a stolen handgun awakens something dark inside him. On a nighttime walk along a Tokyo riverbank, a young man named Nishikawa stumbles on a dead body, beside which lies a gun. From the moment Nishikawa decides to take the gun, the world around him blurs. Knowing he possesses the weapon brings an intoxicating sense of purpose to his dull university life. But soon Nishikawa’s personal entanglements become unexpectedly complicated: he finds himself romantically involved with two women while his biological father, whom he’s never met, lies dying in a hospital. Through it all, he can’t stop thinking about the gun—and the four bullets loaded in its chamber. As he spirals into obsession, his focus is consumed by one idea: that possessing the gun is no longer enough—he must fire it.

Book excerpt: The Glock pistol is America’s Gun. It has been rhapsodized by hip-hop artists and coveted by cops and crooks alike. Created in 1982 by Gaston Glock, the pistol arrived in America at a fortuitous time. Law enforcement agencies had concluded that their agents and officers, armed with standard six-round revolvers, were getting "outgunned" by drug dealers with semi-automatic pistols; they needed a new gun. With its lightweight plastic frame and large-capacity spring-action magazine, the Glock was the gun of the future. You could drop it underwater, toss it from a helicopter, or leave it out in the snow, and it would still fire. It was reliable, accurate, lightweight, and cheaper to produce than Smith and Wesson’s revolver. Filled with corporate intrigue, political maneuvering, Hollywood glitz, bloody shoot-outs—and an attempt on Gaston Glock’s life by a former lieutenant—Glock is not only the inside account of how Glock the company went about marketing its pistol to police agencies and later the public, but also a compelling chronicle of the evolution of gun culture in America.

Book excerpt: A deluxe paperback reissue of British actor (comedian, musician, and writer) Hugh Laurie’s acclaimed spy romp—starring Thomas Lang, a hapless ex-soldier who is drawn into the center of a dangerous plot involving international terrorists, arms dealing, and CIA spooks. Featuring an introduction by Hugh Laurie, and a foreword by Stephen Fry! Retired Army officer Thomas Lang would love nothing more than to live out the rest of his existence drinking whiskey and riding motorcycles, and is content to make ends meet with mercenary jobs—just never murder. Not even when he’s offered a fortune to assassinate American businessman Alexander Woolf. Lang opts to warn the target instead. But Lang’s good deed does not go unpunished. When he finds not Woolf, but Woolf’s alluring daughter, Sarah, and another less scrupulous mercenary closing in, Lang becomes entangled in an international conspiracy that lands him in the sights of both the Ministry of Defence and the CIA. Lang takes on rogue CIA agents, aspiring terrorists, and high-tech arms dealers to prevent an international bloodbath—and save the femme fatale he’s falling in love with. Robert Ludlum by way of—well, Hugh Laurie, THE GUN SELLER is a whizz-bang novel of suspense, espionage, and humor, perfect for crime fiction and comedy fans alike.

Book excerpt: In 1978, the Social and Demographic Research Institute of the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, received a grant from the National Institute of Justice to undertake a comprehensive review of the literature on weapons, crime, and violence in the United States. The purpose of the project is best described as a "sifting and winnowing" of the claims and counterclaims from both sides of the Great American Gun War - the perennial struggle in American political life over what to do, if anything, about guns, about violence, and about crime. The review and analysis of the available studies consumed the better part of three years; the results of this work are contained in this volume. The intention of any review is to take stock of the available fund of knowledge in some topical area. Under the Gun is no different: our goal has been to glean from the volumes of previous studies those facts that, in our view, seem firmly and certainly established; those hypotheses that seem adequately supported by, or at least approximately consistent with, the best available research evidence; and those areas or topics about which, it seems, we need to know a lot more than we do. One of our major conclusions can be stated in advance: despite the large number of studies that have been done, many critically important questions have not been adequately researched, and some of them have not been examined at all.Much of the available research in the area of weapons and crime has been done by advocates for one or another policy position. As a consequence, the manifest intent of many "studies" is to persuade rather than to inform. We have tried to approach the topic from a purely agnostic point of view, treating as an open question what policies should be enacted with regard to gun, or crime, control. Thus, we have tried to judge each study on its own merits, on the basis of the routine standards normally applied to social-scientific research, and not on the basis of how effectively it argues for a particular policy direction. It would, of course, be presumptuous to claim that we have set aside all our own biases in conducting this study. Whether or not our treatment is fair and objective is clearly something for the reader, and not us, to decide.

In a small village in the newly independent state of Croatia, its residents know that a war has started, but nobody senses the tragedy that awaits Kornica, especially a young peasant named Antun. It is not long before Antun is recruited by a new military formation, the Ustashas, where he soon becomes a favorite among the soldiers despite his explosive nature. As the fighting intensifies, Antun joins his fellow soldiers on the battlefields, propelled through time by a series of brutal atrocities that sadly affect his own family and reveal him to be both a hero and a man who recognizes the value of surviving a war in order to feed his family. Will Antun be able to rise above the gunfire and find the freedom he so desperately needs? In this historical novel based on true events, a Bosnian-Croatian peasants life is forever changed as World War II begins and he is recruited to fight on the battlefields.

Book excerpt: A doctor's firsthand account of the devastating impacts of gun violence—and how we can end this epidemic. Gun violence has become the leading cause of death for children and has decreased the lifespan of American adults by 2.5 years. In 2021, more than forty-eight thousand people were killed by guns in the United States. Nearly twice as many were injured. But beyond these statistics are the untold stories of doctors and health care workers who work to save the lives of victims of gun violence. In this powerful and moving book, Cedric Dark takes readers into the harrowing experiences of these physicians. Dark intertwines these stories with an examination of policies that could save countless lives. Combining research, an examination of gun culture, and an exploration of policy options, Under the Gun equips readers with a new understanding of the data and stories needed to confront and persuade politicians to better protect the health and safety of Americans. As an emergency room doctor whose own family has been affected by gun violence, Dark intimately understands how gun violence can destroy lives and communities. He reflects on the events that bring people to the ER while also talking to doctors who not only treat victims of gun violence but also own guns themselves. Under the Gun is a powerful meditation on this uniquely American epidemic and an urgent call to action toward a balanced gun policy in the United States.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In our daily lives we make lots of evaluations of actions. We think that driving above the speed limit is dangerous, that giving up one’s bus seat to the elderly is polite, that stirring eggs with a plastic spoon is neither good nor bad. We understand, too, that we may be praised or blamed for actions performed on the basis of these evaluations. The goal of this study is to illustrate the foundations that allow for these kinds of judgments.
