Book excerpt: The effectiveness of land stewardship must be enhanced to meet a growing population's need for conservation, sustainable development, and use of natural resources. Ecosystem-based, multiple-use oriented land stewardship is necessary when considering the present and future uses of land, water, and other natural resources on an operationally efficient scale. Holistically planned and carefully implemented watershed management practices and programs will always be needed to meet the increasing demands for commodities and amenities, clear water, open space, and uncluttered landscapes. An international conference was held in Tucson, Arizona, on March 13 to 16, 2000, to examine this need. The primary purpose of the conference was to increase people's awareness of the contributions that watershed management can make to future land stewardship in the United States and internationally. Invited synthesis papers were presented by 35 speakers from research institutes, management agencies, and educational organizations in the United States and internationally. More than 50 poster papers on watershed research projects, applied watershed management activities, and technology transfer mechanisms complemented the synthesis papers to broaden the conference scope. Proceedings of the conference, entitled "Land Stewardship in the 21st Century: The Contributions of Watershed Management," were published by and are available from the USDA Forest Service, Rocky Mountain Research Station, 240 West Prospect Road, Fort Collins, CO 80526. These proceedings are also available on the Rocky Mountain Research Station's World Wide Web pages at www.fs.fed.us/rm/pubs/stewardship.html. This bibliography is a compilation of the synthesis and poster papers presented at the conference along with the literature cited in these papers. This publication furnishes a literature basis for researchers, managers, decision-makers, educators, students, and lay persons with a keen interest in watershed management and better land stewardship in the future.

Book excerpt: The International Arid Lands Consortium (IALC) was established in 1990 to promote research, education, and training activities related to the development, management, and restoration or reclamation of arid and semiarid lands worldwide. The IALC, a leading international organization, supports ecological sustainability and development of arid and semiarid lands. Building on a decade of experience, IALC continues to increase the knowledge-base for managers by funding research, development, and demonstration projects, and special initiatives. The results from the scientific and technical projects enhance management and stewardship of arid and semiarid ecosystems for sustainable use, while maintaining the integrity of the ecological processes. The publication presents a review of the accomplishments and contributions of IALC's science and technical programs through a synopsis of the projects and initiatives. We group the projects and initiatives into soil and water resources development and conservation, land use and reclamation, processes enhancing the management of ecological systems, and inventorying and measurements techniques and monitoring.

Book excerpt: This is a state-of-the-science synthesis of the effects of forest harvest activities on peak flows and channel morphology in the Pacific Northwest, with a specific focus on western Oregon and Washington. We develop a database of relevant studies reporting peak flow data across rain-, transient-, and snow-dominated hydrologic zones, and provide a quantitative comparison of changes in peak flow across both a range of flows and forest practices. Increases in peak flows generally diminish with decreasing intensity of percentage of watershed harvested and lengthening recurrence intervals of flow. Watersheds located in the rain-dominated zone appear to be less sensitive to peak flow changes than those in the transient snow zone; insufficient data limit interpretations for the snow zone. Where present, peak flow effects on channel morphology should be confined to stream reaches where channel gradients are less than approximately 0.02 and streambeds are composed of gravel and finer material. We provide guidance as to how managers might evaluate the potential risk of peak flow increases based on factors such as presence of roads, watershed drainage efficiency, and specific management treatments employed. The magnitude of effects of forest harvest on peak flows in the Pacific Northwest, as represented by the data reported here, are relatively minor in comparison to other anthropogenic changes to streams and watersheds.

India, as well as other countries which are predominantly agricultural are facing various challenges due to increasing population which can be met by technological innovations for sustainable agriculture. Advanced and innovative technologies in agriculture will not only solve the problems of fulfilling the food requirement of the growing population but also sustain agriculture in the future. Sustainability of Natural Resources Planning and Management addresses the advancement of innovative techniques to address the issues of water scarcity and agricultural yield. It discusses various aspects of natural resource management, agriculture micro irrigation, AI applications for water management and impacts of climate change on water resources. This book also deals water resource exploration, planning, recent geographic information system-based studies, groundwater modelling, and related applications. It highlights the optimal strategies for sustainable water resource management and development. It also examines precision farming using remote sensing and GIS techniques.

Book excerpt: Timber harvest following wildfire leads to different outcomes depending on the biophysical setting of the forest, pattern of burn severity, operational aspects of tree removal, and other activities. Postfire logging adds to these effects by removing standing dead trees (snags) and disturbing the soil. The influence of postfire logging depends on the intensity of the fire, intensity of the logging operation, and mgmt. activities such as fuel treatments. Removal of snags reduces long-term fuel loads but generally results in increased amounts of fine fuels for the first few years after logging. Cavity-nesting birds, small mammals, and amphibians may be affected by harvest of standing dead and live trees, with negative effects on most species. Illustrations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hydrologic processes in the pinyon-juniper woodlands of the western region of the United States are variable because of the inherent interactions among the occurring precipitation regimes, geomorphological settings, and edaphic conditions that characterize the ecosystem. A wide range of past and present land-use practices further complicates comprehensive evaluations of these hydrologic processes. Heterogeneous vegetative covers make it even more difficult to generalize hydrologic processes and the effects of land management practices on the water balance. Nevertheless, estimates of interception, infiltration, evapotranspiration, soil moisture storage, and hillslope soil erosion of these on-site hydrologic processes have been obtained in plot studies. Estimates of off-site streamflow volumes, sediment yields and transport, and quality of streamflow water are available from the results of watershed-level investigations. Estimates of these respective hydrologic processes are presented in this general technical report.
