The term Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) originated in Perth in the late 1980's and has been rapidly adopted into environmental engineering and development planning. The meaning of the term is variable, but it typically implies the use of source control and natural surface strategies for the management of stormwater for both its resource value and to improve the environmental impacts on receiving waters. However, it can incorporate broader aims, integrating the management of water into a consideration of the urban water cycle and the whole urban landscape. Implementation depends on the technical credentials of the new methods, but also receptive governance, engineering and development communities.

The 7th Urban Drainage Modelling and 4th Water Sensitive Urban Design conferences were held concurrently in Melbourne, Australia in April 2006. They brought together a diverse range of experts to share insights and perspectives on technical, environmental and socio-economical aspects of urban water management. A key highlight of the conference was the focus on integrated approaches, with perspectives from engineers, scientists, social scientists, planners and landscape architects contributing to solutions for urban drainage and water management. Assessment and consideration of uncertainty in models was a major theme to come out of the conference, as was the evolution of new technologies in water sensitive urban design, decision-support systems and real time control. Of the 285 abstracts submitted to the conference, 157 were accepted after a two-stage review. Only 30 of these papers were able to be accepted for publication in Water Science and Technology. Papers selected are those which report the best scientific or technological advances or insights into urban drainage modelling or water sensitive urban design. Together, they represent an authoritative summary of the current state of knowledge in urban drainage modelling and water sensitive urban design.
