Book excerpt: Excerpt from Water Resources of Antelope Valley, California These disastrous and unnecessary failures stopped for a time all growth in the valley, but development has lately taken a more satis factory direction. With a frank recognition of the agricultural and climatic limitations of the region as compared with other parts of California has come a realization of the value of the artesian waters which, though long known to exist, had previously been usefully employed in only a few localities. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Supplemental Report on Water Resources of California: A Report to the Legislature of 1925 The cause of these large areas being only partly occupied, does not emanate from sluggishness in the rate of settlement on California's lands, for California is outstripping all other states of the Union in the rate of its increasing agricultural production. On the contrary, the cause of the only partly occupied irrigated lands issues directly from the large size of new projects, that in a year or two, bring under irrigation in one community, an area of land greater than can be absorbed by normal growth within as many decades. During these years, many tracts, making little use of the available water supply, are heavily taxed to pay the costs of works unused by them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Water Resources of California, Vol. 1: Stream Measurements in Sacramento River Basin The great part which the water resources have had in the develop ment of California is evident throughout its history. Repairs to a mill race near Georgetown, Eldorado County, in 1848, led to the discovery of gold, and the development of the gold-mining industry was due largely to the location of the deposits near the water necessary for hydraulicking. The water available for irrigation and domestic supply has been the chief factor in the development of southern California, which now has a population of more than people. The growth of irrigation systems in the great interior valley is bringing about its subdivision into small ranches devoted to the intensive farming which affords almost limitless opportunities to the agriculturist. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Water Supply Conditions in Southern California During 1955 and 1956 The Legislature, by Chapter 832, Statutes of 1929, directed that exploration and investigation be conducted for the furtherance of a coordinated plan for the conservation, development and utilization of the water resources of California. As a result of this legislation, the Division of Water Resources undertook a continuing hydrologic investigation of the southern California area. Effective July 5, 1956, the responsibilities of the Division of Water Resources, Department of Public Works, were assigned to the Department of Water Resourcespursuant to Chapter 52, Statutes of 1956. As a part of the investigation, Bulletin No. 39 was published in 1932, containing Records of Ground water Levels at Wells. Since 1932, water levels at selected wells have been published annually in Bulletins Nos. 39-a through 394w, which was the last of the lettered series reports. This report, Bulletin No. Is the first of the numbered series reports and follows Bulletin No. B96w with no interruption in the continuity of data. The locations and descriptions of wells in the San Jacinto and Antelope Valleys were first published in Bulletin No. 39=j, and are shown on Maps 9 through 11 included in that bulletin.
