There is a fixed amount of water on earth, but only about 3%% of it is fresh and available for drinking by human, plants and animals. The other 97%% of water, which is mostly stored in the world's seas and oceans, is salty and undrinkable.

Hydrological modeling studies involving modifications in the curve number methodology for simulation of floods and sediment load have also been presented. The weak summer monsoon in 2009 created drought conditions throughout the country. This followed an already tenuous situation for many rural households faced with high fuel and fertilizer costs and the impacts of rising global food prices. Then catastrophic monsoon flooding in 2010 affected over 20 million people, devastating their housing, infrastructure, and crops. Damages from this single flood event were estimated at US dollar 10 billion, half of which were losses in the agriculture sector. Notwithstanding the debate as to whether these observed extremes are evidence of climate change, an investigation is needed regarding the extent to which the country is resilient to these shocks. It is thus timely, if not critical, to focus on climate risks for water, agriculture, and food security in the Indus basin of Pakistan.

Book excerpt: Groundwater is the cherished source of irrigation in India as it plays vital role in increasing food productivity and ensuring food security in India. But adding fly to the ointment, advances in groundwater extraction technology have only resulted in over exploitation of it. Falling ground water tables and depletion of economically accessible ground water resources would have severe socio-economic consequences. Estimates show that 45 per cent of the total irrigation area in Tamil Nadu is plagued by severe exploitation. This may be alluded to changes in the cropping pattern favouring water intensive crops, increase in number of wells and rise in their energization level. The present study was conducted in Thiruvallur district which witnesses burgeoning pressure upon ground water resources by exploding population and industrialization. It was found that area under irrigation intensive crops in the district has increased from 11.21 to 32.52 per cent between the triennium ending 1998-99 and 2010-11. The number of wells also exhibited positive growth coupled with electrification of wells (95 %). Farmers were found to be unaware of falling water table. Thus it becomes pertinent to devise optimal crop plans to sustain the use of underground water sources. The results of the devised optimal crop plans show that the irrigation water use could be reduced by 43.87 to 59.16 hours of pumping in the over exploited ground water regime sample farms. It is also suggested that area under high water consuming crops should give way for low water consuming crops without compromising on livelihood and income support of the farmers.

Book excerpt: In the context of improving water productivity, there is a growing interest in deficit irrigation, an irrigation practice whereby water supply is reduced below maximum levels and mild stress is allowed with minimal effects on yield. Under conditions of scarce water supply and drought, deficit irrigation can lead to greater economic gains than maximizing yields per unit of water for a given crop; farmers are more inclined to use water more efficiently, and more water-efficient cash crop selection helps optimize returns. However, this approach requires precise knowledge of crop response to water as drought tolerance varies considerably by species, cultivar and stage of growth. The studies present the latest research concepts and involve various practices for deficit irrigation. Both annual and perennial crops were exposed to different levels of water stress, either during a particular growth phase, throughout the whole growing season or in a combination of growth stages. The overall finding, based on the synthesis of the different contributions, is that deficit or regulated-deficit irrigation can be beneficial where appropriately applied. Substantial savings of water can be achieved with little impact on the quality and quantity of the harvested yield. However, to be successful, an intimate knowledge of crop behavior is required, as crop response to water stress varies considerably.
