Book excerpt: Excerpt from Washington Irving There are, of course, more formal matters to be considered, his debt to circumstance, his place in the practical world, his influence on the moral or intellectual or national life of his day. Some of these themes may be touched on, even within the narrow limits of the present sketch; not categorically, ' but rather by way of such suggestion and indi rection as may be consistent with a compact narrative. It is thir ty-four years since he dropped his pen, and was laid to rest by that lordly river which his genius has enshrined in the mind of the world with the legendary Rhine and the historic Tiber. For that, also, ows not only through a land of beauty and by famous cities, but through a realm of the imagination - perhaps the most abiding of all our possessions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Washington Irving for Young Readers His wife, especially, had a happy way of persuading Sir Henry Clinton, and when the British general saw her coming, he prepared himself to grant any request about the prisoners which she might make. Often she sent them food from her own table, and cared for them when they were sick. When their last son, the eleventh child was born, on April 3, 1783, the parents showed their loyalty by naming him Washington after the beloved Father of his Country. Six years after this, George Washington was elected president, and went to New York to live. The Scotch maid who took care of little Washington Irving made up her mind to introduce the boy to his great namesake. So one day she followed the general into a shop, and, pointing to the lad, said, "Please, your honor, here's a bairn was named after you." Washington turned around, smiled, and placing his hand on the boy's head, gave him his blessing. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Beauties of Washington Irving Her aunts, too, having been great flirts and coquettes in their younger days, were admirably calculated to be vigilant guardians and strict censors of the conduct of their niece; for there is no duenna so rigidly prudent and inexorably decorous, as a superannuated coquette. She was rarely suffered out of their sight; never went be yond the domains of the castle, unless well attended, or rather well watched; had continual lectures read to her about strict decorum and implicit obedience; and, as to the men - pah! She was taught to hold them at such distance, and in such absolute distrust, that, unless pro perly authorised she would not have cast a glance upon the handsomest cavalier in the world - no, not if he were even dying at her feet. At the former port he met and became enamored of Sarah Sanders, a beautiful girl about two years younger than himself, the only daughter of John and'anna Sanders, and grand daughter of an English curate named Kent. They were married at Falmouth, on the 18th of May, 1761, and two years and two months later em barked for New York, leaving the body of their first child in an English grave-yard. William Irving now abandoned the sea, and entering into trade, was prospering in a small way when the Revolution broke out. His house was under the guns of the English ships of war in the harbor, so he concluded to remove to the country, and took refuge with his family in Rahway, Newjersey. He was safer, perhaps, than he would have been in New York; but business was at an end. He was pointed out as a rebel, and British troops were billeted in his best rooms, while the family was banished to the garret, so he made up his mind to return to New York. He was still a rebel, as well as his wife, who supplied prisoners with food from her own table, visited them in prison when they were ill, and furnished them with clothes, blank ets, and the like. I'd rather you'd send them a rope, Mrs. Irving, said the brutal Cunningham, who, nevertheless, allowed her charities to pass through his hands. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of Washington Irving, Vol. 4: Life of George Washington The present volume completes a work to which the author had long looked forward as the crowning effort of his literary career. The idea of writing a life of Washington entered at an early day into his mind. It was especially pressed upon his attention nearly thirty years ago while he was in Europe, by a proposition of the late Mr. Archibald Constable, the eminent publisher of Edinburgh, and he resolved to undertake it as soon as he should return to the United States, and be within reach of the necessary documents. Various circumstances occurred to prevent him from carrying this resolution into prompt effect. It remained, however, a cherished purpose of his heart, which he has at length, though somewhat tardily, accomplished. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoir of Washington Irving: With Selections From His Works, and Criticisms If, therefore, to such this unpretending volume shall tend to bring the distinguished writer and his Works more prominently to notice, and en tice to a still wider perusal and study of them, then will our humble efi'ort not be in vain. And what was remarked by Edward Everett in the North American Review touching one of Mr. Irving's volumes may be well applied to the majority of his published writings The Ameri can fathe1 who can afford it and does not buy a copy (of' Tour on the Prairies') does not de serve that his sons should prefer his fireside to the bar-room, the pure and chaste pleasures of a cultivated taste to the gross indulgences of sense. He does not deserve that his daughters should pass their leisure hours in maidenly seclusion, and the improvement of their minds, rather than to flaunt on the sidewalks by day.
