Book excerpt: The Three Messiahs explains how a Jewish Messianic figure was transformed into Jesus of Nazareth, the Son of God. From the writings of the Jewish historian, Josephus, Judas the Galilean was the only Messiah figure who matched the mythical Jesus of Nazareth in word and deed. Judas the Galilean preached a nationalistic message which pitted his followers against Herod the Great and Rome. Judas cleansed the Temple, was involved in a Barabbas-style prisoner release and led a tax revolt. His exploits were absorbed into the story of Jesus, who also cleansed the Temple, was involved in the Barabbas prisoner release and was arrested for his refusal to pay taxes to Rome. To many Jews, Judas the Galilean was a failed Messiah. His followers, however, kept him relevant through the concept of bodily resurrection. They believed he would return and defeat the Romans. Paul accepted the resurrection but developed his own interpretation based upon personal revelations. His Messiah had nothing to do with Jewish politics but was a redeemer for all mankind. Paul's theology became the bridge between the historical Judas the Galilean and the mythical Jesus of Nazareth. With the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 CE, Paul's salvation theology soon replaced the Jewish nationalistic teachings of Judas. Within decades, Josephus' historical Judas the Galilean was replaced with the Gospels' Jesus of Nazareth.

Book excerpt: The Story of the Messiah exposes a host of Jewish customs, attitudes, political sects, and institutions during the time of Christ and chronicles the events of His life in Hebrew fashion while harmonizing the accounts of the four Gospel writers. Surely the setting, characters, and plot of this two-thousand-year-old narrative are not unfamiliar, but while snippets of Jesus' life have warmed the hearts of countless readers and listeners, a complete story of our beloved Savior is rarely gleaned. To remedy this vacuum, the author has embellished a chronicle of the life of Jesus by: - shining a light on first-century Judaism - providing historical and factual information pertaining to the Jews in a Greco-Roman world - including numerous tidbits--both credible and incredible--that were pertinent to the various characters and episodes - highlighting solutions to the apparent discrepancies proffered by the original authors Beginning with God's covenant with Abraham and a brief history of Israel, this rendition of Jesus' story gathers truth from the prophets of the old standard as well as meaning from Paul and other writers of the New Testament. The final curtain closes on the Day of Pentecost, when God fulfilled His promise of the Holy Spirit.

Book excerpt: He came from the wrong social class, the wrong place and the wrong profession. He ate with the wrong people, championed the wrong causes and attracted the wrong kind of supporters. He even spoke with the wrong accent. In fact everything about Jesus of Nazareth was wrong. How could this odd-job man be God's Messiah? To the authorities he was a dangerous rebel; to the pious he was scandalously unorthodox. Even his family thought he was mad. But somehow this builder from 'up north' - this outrageous, unorthodox, rebellious teacher and miracle worker - changed the world. In this illuminating new biography, Nick Page strips away centuries of misrepresentation and myth to reveal the real personality portrayed in the gospels. Drawing on a wealth of historical and archaeological research, the result is a startling and vivid new portrait of Yeshua ben Yosef - Jesus of Nazareth. Challenging and thought-provoking, THE WRONG MESSIAH will change the way you view Jesus: the man who in so many ways seemed utterly wrong, but who history has proved triumphantly to be right.

Book excerpt: "Jesus the Messiah" is a basic, non-technical introduction to the life of Christ, carefully tracing His life and works as evidence of the truth of His claims and of the firm convictions of the early Christians--an inspirational study of Christ's life. The author prefaces his work by admitting that "Many deny the possibility of writing a life of Jesus, and it must be conceded that no 'life' in the biographical sense can be written. It is impossible to produce a psychological study of Jesus. His developing awareness of messianic mission cannot be traced. This book presents an account of Jesus from the perspective of faith. It sees in His deeds and words evidence of the truth of His claims and of the firm convictions of the early Christians. . . . No one who reflects on His life and mission can fail to be affected by it, and in this sense the present study is in the nature of a personal testimony."

Book excerpt: The writer of this book attemps to prove that Jesus of Nazareth was tge Messiah or Christ at his birth, on Palm Sunday, and on Easter Sunday. The Old Testamwnt prophecies that Jesus Christ as to be born of a virgin in Bethlehem and that he would be taken to Egypt by his parent for few years were fulfilled. There were some prophecies about his ministry, that he would preach the gospel to the poor and neglected, heal all sorts of diseases, use parables in his preaching, enlighten some and would offend some, etc. all these prophecies were fulfilled. The prophecy about his royal welcome on a colt in Jerusalem, the prophecies about his death and rulers of the land, he would be ill-treated by Jewish religious authorities and sufferings and that he would be resurrected on the third day were all fulfilled. In short, all were fulfilled. Therefore, Jesus of Nazareth was undoubtedly the anticipated Messiah or Christ.

Book excerpt: *Includes pictures *Includes ancient accounts *Includes online resources and a bibliography for further reading In the 1st century CE there lived a man named Jesus in Judea, a Roman province at the time. The humble peasant was considered by some to be a prophet, others saw him as a madman, and some considered him as a threat to the safety of the land. In his last days he preached in Jerusalem about the imminent destruction of the Holy City and its temple. He gained notoriety and his warning had an eerie feel about it. His prophecy included parabolic language. Jesus spoke, according to sources, about the wind that carried signs, possibly echoing the words of the prophet Isaiah, and enigmatic parables about the wedding groom and his bride. Some people found his words offensive, and had him arrested and flogged. Unsure what to do with him, the temple authorities handed him over to the Roman procurator. When Jesus was before him, Rome's governor questioned him and asked him what was all that he was prophesying about, but the prisoner did not utter a single word. The procurator had him whipped again, but Jesus did not complain or shed a tear. He did not curse the guards who made fun of him and beat his crushed body. Jesus lamented once again for the fate of the people of Jerusalem, and it was there, not far from the temple, that he was killed by a catapult. There are no other details about Jesus, the son of Ananias, or Jesus ben Ananias, who died near the temple of Jerusalem in 70 AD when a stone thrown by a Roman ballista hit him in the head, except that his last words were "Woe to me!." This doomed prophet was active four decades after a much more famous predecessor, Jesus of Nazareth, who was not knocked down by a stone near the temple but crucified outside the city around 30 AD. It's even possible that both individuals once crossed paths when the son of Ananias was a boy and the Nazarene was already an influential prophet. Maybe the latter was inspired by the Galilean. Historians will likely never know for sure because his disciples, if he had any, did not preserve his words or remember his deeds. Indeed, this Jesus may have been forgotten altogether if not for the Jewish historian Flavius Josephus recounting his strange story The Jewish Wars, written five years after the event. The former anecdote is, above all, great evidence that Jesus of Nazareth, the Christian messiah, was not the only charismatic prophet in Judea, not even in his native Galilee, which was populated by prophets and rebels. Jesus of Nazareth was not the only Jew of his time to be considered a son of God with power to perform miracles, and he was certainly not the only one to be called the messiah during the years of Roman occupation. Like him, other Galileans were executed by the imperial forces under charges of sedition ("This is the king of the Jews"). Indeed, the founder of Christianity lived in a province and a time where others like him blossomed, spiritual men who claimed to carry a divine message or mission from the heavenly Father for the redemption of his children, Israel. For the most part forgotten, they were "the other" prophets, miracle workers and messiahs - in some cases acclaimed as kings - and they were certainly contemporaries of Jesus of Nazareth. The New Testament does not deny the existence of such characters; in fact, it gives subtle but unequivocal clues to their presence. Like Jesus, other prophets, miracle-makers and aspiring messiahs were active in Judea under Herod and his sons, and then under Rome ́s prefects, like Pilate. They felt that the authority of the Highest was with them; they proclaimed that there was no other king but God, and they promised their followers they would see miraculous signs and God's deliverance if they only resisted just a little longer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to help thoughtful readers of the gospels to discern more clearly the features of him whom those writings inimitably portray. It is avowedly a study rather than a story, and as a companion to the reading of the gospels it seeks to answer some of the questions which are raised by a sympathetic consideration of those narratives. These answers are offered in an unargumentative way, even where the questions are still in debate among scholars. This method has been adopted because technical discussion would be of interest to but few of those whom the book hopes to serve. On some of the questions a non-committal attitude is taken in the belief that for the understanding of the life of Jesus it is of little importance which way the decision finally goes. Less attention has been given to questions of geography and archeology than to those which have a more vital biographical significance.
