Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book provides a clear, easy-to-read account of what Chinese acupuncture is, how it works, and what it can treat—all expressed in terms that Western readers can understand. Hence, it can be fruitfully read by any patient who wishes to understand their treatment, how it works and the thinking behind it; or read by acupuncture students who wish to quickly obtain this same overview of the subject—to complement their more detailed studies and to also learn how to communicate the subject to patients. Fletcher Kovich runs his own Chinese acupuncture practice in the UK. He previously wrote the textbook Acupuncture Today and in Ancient China, which this book is a reduction of.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1987, our first book Acupuncture: Textbook and Atlas received rave reviews (e.g., in New England Journal of Medicine). This prompted us to write this smaller, affordable version in order to reach a wider audience. The smaller format has been so successful that we are now into our fourth revised edition. This has given us the opportunity to update and improve the book. For example, nu merous new references to scientific advances have been added. Also the section on traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) was ad ded because it gives a more complete picture of the current prac tice of acupuncture. Acupuncture has come a long way since our first book in 1987. There has been a surge of interest in treating drug addictions by ear acupuncture in 450 centers world wide. The treatment of nau sea and vomiting has been so well tested (scientifically) that the FDA (USA) is considering making this the major indication for acupuncture in America. Research into its efficacy for neurologi cal and pulmonary diseases is also gaining credibility. No longer is chronic pain the only scientifically acceptable use for acupuncture (based on the endorphin mechanism).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chinese acupuncture is a mixture of ideas from ancient Chinese scripts (the Nei Jing) and from the 1970’s reinterpretation of the Nei Jing. Parts of the Nei Jing are fact based, parts are metaphorical, and parts are based on theories that are simply untrue. However, this is not usually acknowledged and instead the Nei Jing is only selectively quoted and presented as though it were all factual. This has produced a medical system that is notoriously difficult for Westerners to understand, has no scientific basis, and is at odds with today’s physiology. This book resolves all these issues by analysing the Nei Jing theories on metabolism, organ function, physiology, and the five phase theory; and clearly explaining which parts of these ideas are fact based and which untrue. The valuable, fact-based elements of the Nei Jing are then related to today’s physiology, so that the overlap can be clearly seen. This approach enables students to readily understand Nei Jing metabolism and physiology; to appreciate the valuable, fact-based elements of Chinese medicine; and to understand how to apply these in clinic. This also makes it possible to clearly communicate about Chinese acupuncture to Western patients, which was previously a considerable challenge. The book also analyses recent scientific ideas on how acupuncture may work, and describes its own “intelligent tissue” hypothesis. This groundbreaking hypothesis is supported by objective experimental data and provides a lucid and plausible explanation of what the meridians are, what acupuncture is; and it also clearly describes the mechanism that enables acupuncture to correct organ malfunctions. The book is an updated and expanded edition of the author’s previous book: Secrets of the Hidden Vessels. Fletcher Kovich runs his own Chinese acupuncture practice in the UK. Praise for the previous edition of this book “The book is fascinating. It gives great insights into the organ functions and also uses an interesting approach to explain the mental and emotional factors in causing disease. My students find the book indispensable.” - Brandon Fuller, Acupuncture Chair, East West College of Natural Medicine, Sarasota, Florida. “The book is an excellent alternative to the Maciocia textbook, The Foundations of Chinese Medicine, and my students find it very useful in their studies.” - Fanyi Meng, Programme leader, BSc Acupuncture course, Lincoln College, UK “We have come across many books on Chinese Medicine and particularly like this book’s approach of blending the Western and Chinese understanding of the organs, to make it clear that both systems describe the same organs.” - Sam Patel, Joint Principal, The International College of Oriental Medicine (UK)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Nei Jing consists of ancient Chinese scripts and is the foundation of Chinese acupuncture. But several factors make the Nei Jing, and also today’s Chinese medicine, difficult to comprehend. Parts of the Nei Jing are fact based, parts are metaphorical and not intended to be interpreted literally, and other parts contain contradictory theories, which cannot all be true. Added to this is the problem that Chinese medicine concepts can seem incomprehensible to Western readers anyway. This book tackles these problems by relating Chinese medicine knowledge to today’s physiology and identifying the overlap. The book also extensively analyses the Nei Jing theories on metabolism, organ function, physiology, and the five phase theory; and points out which aspects of these theories are fact based, which are metaphorical, and which are untrue. This enables students to readily understand Nei Jing metabolism and physiology, and to decide for themselves which aspects apply in reality. Today’s Chinese medicine disease syndromes are also explained. But in general the book follows the simple approach used in the Nei Jing. With each organ, a single main condition is cited, such as “poor kidney function”, then the signs and symptoms listed. This enables Western students to understand the condition, and also demonstrates how to communicate Chinese medicine to patients. The book brings an unusual transparency to Chinese medicine, making the whole subject easier to understand. Fletcher Kovich runs his own Chinese acupuncture practice in the UK. Praise for Secrets of the Hidden Vessels "The book is fascinating. And from the teaching perspective, it is a great tool to help students understand the organ functions. The book also uses an interesting approach to explain the mental and emotional factors in causing disease, which again will greatly assist in the teaching of this aspect of Chinese medicine." - Brandon Fuller, Program Chair, East West College of Natural Medicine, Sarasota, Florida. “We have come across many books on Chinese Medicine and particularly like this book’s approach of blending the Western and Chinese understanding of the organs, to make it clear that both systems describe the same organs. There is a global paradigm shift in medicine, and the importance of Chinese Medicine in understanding the body and health plays a key role in the West’s acceptance of alternative approaches to healthcare.” - Sam Patel, Joint Principal, The International College of Oriental Medicine (UK)
