Book Synopsis The Presidents by : Stephen Graubard
Download or read book The Presidents written by Stephen Graubard and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2009-05-07 with total page 807 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this magisterial examination of the Presidency over the course of the 20th Century, the author explores the history of the world's greatest elective office and the role each incumbent has played in changing the scope of its powers. Using individual presidential portraits of each of the presidents of the past century Graubard asks, and answers, a wide variety of crucial questions about each President. What intellectual, social and political assets did they bring to the White House, and how quickly did they deplete or mortgage that capital? How well did they cope with crises, foreign and domestic? How much attention did they pay to their election pledges after they were elected? How did they use the media, old and new? Above all, how did they conduct themselves in office and what legacy did they leave to their successors? Graubard provides original analysis in each case, and reaches many surprising conclusions.
Book Synopsis Special Operations Forces in the 21st Century by : Jessica Glicken Turnley
Download or read book Special Operations Forces in the 21st Century written by Jessica Glicken Turnley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-08-09 with total page 541 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book sets out the major social scientific approaches to the study of Special Operations Forces. Despite consistent downsizing, over the past two decades the armed forces of the industrial democracies have seen a huge growth in Special Operations Forces (SOF). Through increasing numbers of personnel and more frequent deployments, SOF units have wielded considerable influence in conflicts around the world, with senior SOF officers having led major strategic operations. This increased presence and unprecedented expansion for SOF is largely a result of the ‘new’ kinds of conflicts that have emerged in the 21st century. At the same time, even with this high profile in the military, policy and media and popular cultural arenas, there is relatively little social scientific research on SOF. This volume aims to fill this gap by providing a series of studies and analyses of SOF across the globe, since the end of World War II. Analysing SOF at the micro, mezzo and macro levels provides broad and diverse insights. Moreover, the volume deals with new issues raised by the use of such forces that include emerging modes of civilian control, innovative organizational forms and the special psychological characteristics necessitated by SOF operatives. It concludes with a discussion of a question which continues to be debated in today’s militaries: what makes SOF ‘special’? Filling a clear gap in the literature, this book will be of much interest to students of strategic studies, civil-military relations, irregular warfare, security studies, and international relations.
Book Synopsis Tradition and the Rhetoric of Right by : David J. Lorenzo
Download or read book Tradition and the Rhetoric of Right written by David J. Lorenzo and published by Fairleigh Dickinson Univ Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book examines and establishes the importance of one aspect of popular political arguments - rhetorical features that draw upon tradition as taken-for-granted values, judgments, and calculations. It illustrates how popular political arguments draw upon this "rhetoric of right," unique to each political community, to establish the "correctness" or "rightness" of a policy proposal. It then uses that illustration to argue first that tradition in political arguments is not only present, but important; second, that tradition operates through time in a contextual rather than evolutionary manner, and third, that political theorists must take seriously the presence of tradition in political arguments in both its substance and its formal aspects." "The book is based upon a study of political arguments in the Indian religious/political movement that grew up around the Indian mystic Aurobindo Ghose and his collaborator Mirra Richard."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Synopsis Triumphs and Tragedies of the Modern Presidency by : Maxmillian Angerholzer III
Download or read book Triumphs and Tragedies of the Modern Presidency written by Maxmillian Angerholzer III and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2016-04-25 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Applying the lessons of presidential history, this anthology of case studies—written by leading political scientists, historians, and subject matter experts—delves into the many facets of the presidency and promotes a greater understanding of the presidency for policymakers, academics, students, and general readers alike. Abraham Lincoln once said, "Fellow citizens, we cannot escape history." One hundred and fifty years later, this statement remains true: the lessons of history are increasingly important at a time of political deadlock and growing skepticism of leadership among the American public. An established classic in its field, Triumphs and Tragedies of the Modern Presidency underscores the importance of looking back to set an intelligent course for the future and promotes a better understanding of the U.S. presidency. This updated and revised second edition offers rare insights on presidential leadership since 2001 and adds considerable new information related to inter-term transitions. The case studies in this single-volume work cover an unparalleled scope of "modern presidential history" and related topics, beginning with the presidency of Franklin Roosevelt and continuing to the presidency of Barack Obama. Examples of the events and subject matter of the case studies include the interstate transport system, the building of the social safety net, the civil rights movement, the space program, environmental protection, education reform, the IT revolution, energy policy, the budget, economic policy, foreign policy, national security, defense policy, and presidential scandals. Each case study highlights a historical lesson and is authored by a different political scientist, historian, or subject matter expert, offering readers a multidisciplinary examination of the presidency.

It's also unfortunate. Humor graces biblical texts at so many levels that to miss the humor is to miss not only much of the emotional impact of the Bible, but much of its meaning. Illuminating Humor of the Bible shows how--and how much--comic elements contribute to understanding the most vital book in our culture. Biblical humor has been seriously underestimated. We have not begun to appreciate why humor winks with such unexpected frequency and understated significance from this revered text. Unveiled by the frank perspective of humor, Bible texts reveal implications that will surprise the most informed readers. The reader-response lamp of humor lights up dark corners of biblical significance inaccessible until now. Book Synopsis Warrior At Peace by : Ronald L. Chisté
Download or read book Warrior At Peace written by Ronald L. Chisté and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2009-09-28 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mighty Apache warrior, Geronimo, died and was buried as a prisoner of war in 1907, at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. For many years rumors existed about the desecration of his grave in 1917, and that the theft of his skull and leg bones was committed by a group of young army officers who had been classmates at Yale University. The recent discovery of an original letter written by one of these men describing the theft in detail lifted the story from rumor to reality. Chiste crafted this story in which Tom Lasino, who Chiste’ originally introduced in his award-winning terrorism thriller, Eagles Don’t Die, is contacted by former Vice President Randall and is asked to engage in a personal mission on his behalf regarding this Geronimo incident. Lasino, along with two of Geronimo’s grandchildren, devise and execute an action packed plan to liberate and repatriate Geronimo’s remains. Lasino’s and his compatriots’ adventure leads them from the Mescalero Indian reservation in New Mexico, to Fort Sill, Oklahoma, to Yale University, to New York’s Thousand Island region, to the Chesapeake Bay’s Eastern Shore, and finally to the headwaters of the Gila River in New Mexico where Geronimo wanted to be buried. In the course of Lasino’s mission he encounters murders, robberies, international conspiracy, and corrupt politicians. The conflicts between honor and dishonor, courage and cowardice, greed and selflessness tug at the characters throughout this mission. The adventure takes many twists and turns in which some of the most noble of characters turn out to be despicable. Though a novel, this story educates the reader about the strength of traditions, conviction, and pride among Native Americans. The true character of Geronimo, based on his own words, boldly jumps from each chapter.”
