Book Synopsis The Biafra Story by : Frederick Forsyth
Download or read book The Biafra Story written by Frederick Forsyth and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2001 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the book which marked Frederick Forsyth's transition from journalist to author. A record of one of the most brutal conflicts the Third World has ever suffered, it has become a classic of modern war reporting. But it is more than that. It voices one man's outrage not only at the extremes of human violence, but also at the duplicity and self-interest of the Western Governments - most notably, the British, who tacitly accepted or actively aided that violence.

This book was released on 2010-09-25 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Biafran Soldiers Survival from the Jaws of Death: Nigeria-Biafran Civil War is a reflection of a personal experience in the battlefield and an insight about certain activities in some war theaters. Attempt was made to illustrate how Nigeria waged a war of genocide against Eastern Nigeria especially the Igbos (Biafrans). This book went further to show that the nonchalant attitude of many African countries toward the Nigeria-Biafra conflict later metamorphosed in various conflicts in many parts of Africa. The growth of Africa has been retarded by similar wars in Angola, Congo, Mozambique, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Ivory Coast, Chad, Sudan, Somalia, Uganda, Burundi, Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Rwanda. One of the objectives of this book is to lay the facts and was neither intended to evoke sentiments nor to cast aspersion on any group or individuals. It is better to learn from our past mistakes for the future progress and unity of Nigeria. Although the war has ended, some of the factors that contributed to the causes of the civil war are still there. In order to keep Nigeria as one indivisible entity, there should be concrete efforts to ensure that human rights of all Nigerians are fully protected.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When a country's army headquarters that is commissioned to deafeat the enemy becomes an indisputable agent of the enemey, defeat of the country is inevitable. This book is about ethnic dynamics and conflict in a multi-ethnic federation where one ethnic group sets out to eliminate an economically and academically domination one by a pogrom. The pogrom led to the secession of the oppressed ethnic group along with its minority elements in the region. In effect, a Civil War ensued. The oppressed and secessionist ethnic group, the Igbos, had the wherewithal to defeat the federal forces within three weeks, but they were internally defeated by a culture of segregation. The culturally segregated class secretly allied with the federal forces to crush the secessionist region- Biafra. The author lays down, in describing the modue operandi of the segregated class- (saboteurs), his nerve-racking experiences in the battlefiled where bonafide Biafran soldiers were hunted by their fellow comrades. Unfortunately, they did not know that they were being hunted by those they had no reason to fear. Some lucky and sincere Biafran soldiers came to know what was happening when the war was virtually over. But many did not survive the acts of sabotage. They perished in the hands of their fellow comrades. The author prescribes manifest nullification of all forms of overt and covert cultural segregation in Igbo culture for the ethnic survival. On the whole, the book demonstrates a convergence of conflict sociology, cultural anthropology, plotical history, military science, ethos of mysticism, spiritualism, and mystic philosophy in an amazing story.

Download or read book Through the Eyes of the Child written by John Mozie and published by . This book was released on 2021-05-28 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the heels of a pogrom of Eastern Nigerians (predominantly Igbos) in the Northern Region of Nigeria in 1966, and an unsuccessful attempt at Mediation in Aburi, Ghana, the Governor of Eastern Nigeria, Colonel Emeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, after consultation with the representatives of the peoples of the Region, declared the Region an independent nation, Biafra. The declaration of the Republic of Biafra led to a 30-month brutal civil war which claimed over 2 million lives in Biafra. Most of these victims were children who died from hunger, disease, and bombardment. Many were flown abroad to Gabon for safety, but after the cessation of hostilities, most of them were never returned to their families. This book is a compendium of the individual stories written by men and women who were children aged between 3 and 15 during the war. It takes you through their journeys and their lives during the period July 1967 to January 1970, and captures their experiences in Biafra, in their own words.

Book excerpt: *Includes pictures *Includes contemporary accounts of the Nigerian civil war *Includes online resources and a bibliography for further reading "[A] cardinal principle of British colonial policy [is] that the interests of a large native population shall not be subject to the will... of a small minority of educated and Europeanized natives." - Lord Frederick Lugard Nigeria was the creation of a British businessman by the name of Sir George Taubman Goldie. The gifted son of a substantial Manx military officer and politician, Goldie was educated at the prestigious Royal Military Academy at Woolwich, after which he served briefly in the army before embarking on a journey of adventure to West Africa. The year was 1877, and the West African coast was sub-divided into the spheres of influence of various European trading concerns, and while some exploration of the interior had taken place, the European rush to claim the region had yet to begin in earnest. Nigeria was an unpopular destination for European settlement, thanks to its punishing climate and proliferation of tropical disease, so it saw very little direct European influence. Europeans were posted to Nigeria or sought employment purely to satisfy the needs of administration, and, of course, the various Christian missionary organizations were led largely by whites. Christian missions, incidentally, succeeded spectacularly in the spreading of Christianity across the animist south, but they made absolutely no inroads in the Muslim north. Nigeria was among the first African colonies to be groomed for independence, and upon its success as a free nation, Britain staked a great deal. The process was lengthy, bearing in mind both the intricate ethnic tapestry of the region and the relatively complex systems of government, involving a number of different permutations in the 15 years between the end of World War II and 1960, when independence was finally granted. During this period, the realization began to dawn that the original 1914 amalgamation of the northern and southern protectorates of Nigeria might have been a strategic blunder, inasmuch as an attempt had been made to forge a single territory out of two radically different and mutually antagonistic blocs. It was, of course, too late by then to try and alter the political map of Nigeria, but perhaps the creation of two territories, rather than one, would have ultimately served the region better. On October 1, 1960, the new nation of Nigeria took its place on the world stage, and it was welcomed into the United Nations and the British Commonwealth. Riding a wave of official optimism, with its deep ethnic fissures for the time being hidden, Nigeria was hailed as a signature success in British decolonization. It would soon prove to be anything but a success. Biafra: The History and Legacy of the Secessionist Republic of Biafra during the Nigerian Civil War chronicles the story of Nigeria, its civil war, and the controversial secession of Biafra. Along with pictures and a bibliography, you will learn about Biafra like never before.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the end of the Biafran-Nigerian War, it is customary for Igbos (or Ibos) to claim that Awolowo cowardly backed out of an "understanding" to declare the Oduduwa Republic when Ojukwu declared Biafra. The impression is that Awolowo seduced Igbos into going for a war, and then backed down, and left Igbos to fight the war alone. As if that was not bad enough, he turned around to join forces with the feudal Northern Nigeria to fight Igbos. This is the basis for Igbos hating, not just Awolowo, but also the entire generations of Yoruba. The hatred has reached the level of ethnic harassment of Yorubas by Igbos. This book is written to clear the misunderstandings around the Civil War, and to serve as a tool of self-defense for Yoruba children. The ethnic harassment MUST STOP.

Book Synopsis The Politics of Post-War Demobilisation and Reintegration in Nigeria by : Olukunle Ojeleye
Download or read book The Politics of Post-War Demobilisation and Reintegration in Nigeria written by Olukunle Ojeleye and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-24 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With an increasing international interest in post civil war demobilisation and reintegration, especially in Africa, Ojeleye presents a well timed body of knowledge on the Nigerian civil war. Moreover, this book provides an in-depth study of the modalities and processes of the demobilisation and reintegration exercises carried out at the end of the Nigerian civil war and assesses their implications for national politics in the West African nation. The author identifies the political, socio-economic and cultural background to the Nigerian civil war and discusses the central theme of demobilisation, disarmament and reintegration (DDR) in Nigeria against the backdrop of the policy of the country's post war reconstruction, reconciliation and rehabilitation exercise (the 3Rs). Though the central theme is Nigeria, it compares the demobilisation and reintegration exercise in Nigeria with other attempts in Sub Sahara Africa by highlighting the important deviations and drawing some conclusions on the Nigerian experience. It also touches on issues relating to international involvement and intervention in civil wars and the roles of the African Union, the Commonwealth of Nations and the United Nations.

Book Synopsis Where Bones Dance by : Nina Newington
Download or read book Where Bones Dance written by Nina Newington and published by Terrace Books. This book was released on 2007-04-01 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this stunning debut novel, a child dissects the darkness at the heart of her British diplomatic family. Living in Nigeria on the brink of civil war, Anna—also known as Jake—becomes blood brothers with Dave, the Korean American daughter of a C.I.A. operative. They do push-ups, collect pornography, and plot lives of unmarried freedom while around them a country disintegrates. Luscious, terrifying, and raw, Nigeria itself becomes a lesson in endurance, suffering, love. Stories are layered upon stories: Anna's grandmother tells stories about life as a white woman on the Gold Coast; the clairvoyant and closeted "Aunt" Elsie gives Anna a story of transformation to hold onto in the coming tumult of adolescence. Yet Where Bones Dance also spirals down to the stories that are not told—sexual abuse, the myth of benign colonialism, the chaos of postcolonial Africa. Sensual and fantastical by turns, this moving, funny, immensely readable book delivers an understanding of the interplay of sexuality, gender, race, and war that is sophisticated beyond the years of its intrepid narrator. Winner, Georges Bugnet Award for Novel, Alberta Literary Awards, Writers Guild of Alberta Best Books for General Audiences, selected by the American Association of School Librarians and the Public Library Association
