Book Synopsis The Antique Drums of War by : James H. McRandle
Download or read book The Antique Drums of War written by James H. McRandle and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historian McRandle contends that war is a deep-rooted human institution, like marriage and food sharing, that depends on ritual and myth. He began his inquiry after being struck by the similarity of letters from common soldiers as long as 2,000 years ago, and has mustered evidence from psychological concepts, literature, and studies of animal behavior. He suggests that soldiers raping conquered women, rather than an atrocious side effect of war, may be its fundamental purpose. Annotation copyright by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Download or read book War Drums of Eagle King written by P.W.INGTY and published by Partridge Publishing. This book was released on 2015-10-05 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WAR DRUMS OF EAGLE KING, is a story of Koch warrior Sukladhvaj, brother of Nar Narayan ruler of the Koch Kingdom during the 16th century. He was Commander-in-Chief of the Koch army and under his leadership the Koch troops achieved devastating victories over the Ahoms, the Kacharies, the Twipra and others as a result of the brilliant strategy and swift hitting tactics used by Sukladhvaj. His deadly tactics and swift victories over his opponents earn him the nickname of Chilarai which means eagle king and his success is partly attributed to the mysterious power of an eagle that he is said to be capable of invoking on rare occasions. During his campaigns Chilarai meets Sankardev, a great religious and cultural reformer and the experience has such an effect on Chilarai that a subtle change takes place in his perception of life and society. He also meets and later on weds the lovely and devoted Kamala. The eagle king is snared during his expedition to Gauda, in a trap laid by the clever Kalapahar, a General of Gauda and then held as a prisoner in the city of Gaur. However, Chilarai charms his way into a position of favor with Sultan Suleiman and his family and as a result he is finally released from captivity. Soon after his release the war drums start rolling out their ominous beat once again.
Book Synopsis Sympathy for the Drummer by : Mike Edison
Download or read book Sympathy for the Drummer written by Mike Edison and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-11-05 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sympathy for the Drummer: Why Charlie Watts Matters is both a gonzo rush—capturing the bristling energy of the Rolling Stones and the times in which they lived—and a wide-eyed reflection on why the Greatest Rock 'n' Roll Band in the World needed the world's greatest rock 'n' roll drummer. Across five decades, Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts has had the best seat in the house. Charlie Watts, the anti-rock star—an urbane jazz fan with a dry wit and little taste for the limelight—was witness to the most savage years in rock history, and emerged a hero, a warrior poet. With his easy swing and often loping, uneven fills, he found nuance in a music that often had little room for it, and along with his greatest ally, Keith Richards, he gave the Stones their swaggering beat. While others battled their drums, Charlie played his modest kit with finesse and humility, and yet his relentless grooves on the nastiest hard-rock numbers of the era ("Gimme Shelter," "Street Fighting Man," "Brown Sugar," "Jumpin' Jack Flash," etc.) delivered a dangerous authenticity to a band that on their best nights should have been put in jail. Author Mike Edison, himself a notorious raconteur and accomplished drummer, tells a tale of respect and satisfaction that goes far beyond drums, drumming, and the Rolling Stones, ripping apart the history of rock'n'roll, and celebrating sixty years of cultural upheaval. He tears the sheets off of the myths of music making, shredding the phonies and the frauds, and unifies the frayed edges of disco, punk, blues, country, soul, jazz, and R&B—the soundtrack of our lives. Highly opinionated, fearless, and often hilarious, Sympathy is an unexpected treat for music fans and pop culture mavens, as edgy and ribald as the Rolling Stones at their finest, never losing sight of the sex and magic that puts the roll in the rock —the beat, that crazy beat!—and the man who drove the band, their true engine, the utterly irreplaceable Charlie Watts.

Book excerpt: The bestselling novel behind John Ford’s acclaimed film starring Claudette Colbert, Henry Fonda, and Edna May Oliver. When newlyweds Gilbert and Lana Martin settle in the Mohawk Valley in 1776, they work tirelessly against the elements to build a new life. But even as they clear land and till soil to establish their farm, the shots of the Revolutionary War become a rallying cry for both the loyalists and the patriots. Soon, Gil and Lana see their neighbors choose sides against each other—as British and Iroquois forces storm the valley, targeting anyone who supports the revolution. Originally published in 1936, this classic novel was a bestseller for two years—second only to Gone with the Wind—and was adapted into a motion picture in 1939. Now, some three-quarters of a century later, Drums Along the Mohawk stands as a brilliant account of the majesty of the New York frontier, the timeless rhythms that shape a marriage, and the battles of a revolution that would change the world. Foreword by Diana Gabaldon Vintage Movie Classics spotlights classic films that have stood the test of time, now rediscovered through the publication of the novels on which they were based.

Book Synopsis The Drums of the 47th by : Robert Jones Burdette
Download or read book The Drums of the 47th written by Robert Jones Burdette and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This eloquent memoir records the Civil War experiences of Robert J. Burdette, private in the 47th Illinois Infantry Regiment. From Peoria to Corinth, from Corinth to Vicksburg, up the Red River country, down to Mobile and Fort Blakely, and back to Tupelo and Selma, the 47th marched three thousand miles during Burdette's tour, from March 1862 to December 1864. In a literate voice rare in war memoirs, Burdette speaks of comradeship built and tested, the noise and confusion of the battlefield, the conflicting feelings of witnessing a military execution. Both nostalgic and piercingly immediate, his remembrances evoke the sights, sounds, smells, and above all the inner feelings stirred up by war, from exuberance to terror and from patriotic fervor to compassion for a fallen enemy. Originally published--on the eve of another great conflict--in 1914, The Drums of the 47th is a moving depiction of the inner life of the common soldier. Like Stephen Crane's The Red Badge of Courage, Burdette's book puts a human face on the war and his words speak to all who have served or imagined serving under fire. The introduction by John E. Hallwas provides a biographical sketch of Burdette and a commentary on his engaging Civil War memoir.
