Book excerpt: In 2011, the ATLAS detector recorded an integrated luminosity of over 5 fb−1 of proton-proton collisions delivered by the LHC at a centre-of-mass square root of s = 7 TeV. The first of two analyses is a test of the standard model and the world's most precise measurement of the top quark pair production cross section for final states which include a hadronically decaying tau lepton. The second analysis uses the same dataset to search for a charged Higgs boson, also resulting in the world's best limits for the search channel. In the cross section measurement, 2.1 fb−1 of ATLAS proton-proton collision data is used to measure the top quark pair production cross section in events containing an isolated electron or muon and a tau lepton decaying hadronically. After initial event requirements, the leading background comes from top quark pairs with jets faking tau leptons. A fit to a tau lepton identification variable is used to determine the signal yield. The measured cross section, [sigma][subscript{tt̄}] 186±13(stat.)±2019(syst.)±7(lumi.)pb, is in good agreement with the standard model prediction. Several extensions to the standard model predict the existence of at least one charged Higgs boson, H[superscript ±]. According to these extensions, the top quark can decay into a bottom quark and a light charged Higgs boson in addition to the standard model decay to a bottom quark and aW boson. In the second analysis, event yield ratios between different final states are measured using 4.6 fb−1 of ATLAS data. This is compared to simulation to search for a violation of lepton universality. This ratio-based method reduces the impact of systematic uncertainties in the analysis. No significant deviations from the standard model predictions are observed. With the assumption that the charged Higgs boson branching ratio to a tau lepton and a neutrino is 100%, upper limits in the range 3.2%-4.4% can be placed on the top quark to charged Higgs branching ratio for 90 less than or equal to m[subscript {H[superscript ±]}] less than or equal to 140 GeV. After combination with results from a search for charged Higgs bosons in tt̄ decays using the thad+jets final state, upper limits on this branching ratio can be set in the range 0.8%-3.4%, for 90 less than or equal to m[subscript {H[superscript ±]}] less than or equal to 140 GeV.

This book was released on 2020 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: This thesis presents a measurement of the Higgs-boson production cross-section and a test of CP invariance in vector-boson fusion production in the semileptonic final state of the H->tau tau decay channel. Both analyses use proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb^-1 recorded with the ATLAS detector at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The events are divided into categories that target the specific kinematics of the gluon fusion- and the vector-boson fusion production processes of the Higgs boson. A maximum-likelihood fit in the reconstructed di-tau mass is performed to extract the H->tau tau cross-section. A signal excess with an observed significance of 2.4 standard deviations is found under the background-only hypothesis, whereas the expected significance is 2.6 standard deviations. The resulting H->tau tau cross-section is 3.13 +1.53/-1.33 pb, which is in agreement with the prediction by the Standard Model. In combination with the fully leptonic- and fully hadronic final states of the H->tau tau decay channel, the resulting cross-section is 3.77 +1.06/-0.95 pb, which is again consistent with the prediction by the Standard Model. The obtained observed significance is 4.4 standard deviations with an expected significance of 4.1 standard deviations. Further combination with the result of the search for the H->tau tau decay with data recorded at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV yields an observed significance of 6.4 standard deviation with an expected significance of 5.4 standard deviations. To test CP invariance in the coupling between the Higgs boson and the electroweak gauge bosons, the production of the Higgs boson via vector-boson fusion is studied. This production process is separated from other processes by using a machine learning approach in form of Boosted Decision Trees. An Effective Field Theory approach is used to expand the Lagrangian of the Standard Model with additional CP-odd terms, quantified by the parameter dtilde. Maximum-likelihood fits are performed in the CP-odd Optimal Observable to set constraints on dtilde. The observed confidence interval at 68.3% confidence level is [-0.006,0.089], whereas the expected confidence interval is [-0.064,0.065]. The combination with the fully leptonic- and fully hadronic final states of the H->tau tau decay channel yields an observed 68.3% confidence interval of [-0.090,0.035] with an expected confidence interval of [-0.035,0.033]. In the combination, also an expected confidence interval at 95% confidence level of [-0.21,015] is obtained. All the results are in agreement with dtilde=0 as predicted by the Standard Model

Book excerpt: A search for the Standard Model Higgs boson is performed in 4.0 fb-1 of p$\bar{p}$ collisions at √s = 1.96 TeV, collected with the DØ detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. The final state considered is a pair of b-jets with large missing transverse energy and one hadronic tau decay as expected from the reaction p$\bar{p}$ → WH → [tau] v b$\bar{b}$. Boosted decision trees are used to discriminate the signal from the background. Good agreement is observed between data and expected backgrounds. For a Higgs boson mass of 115 GeV, a limit is set at 95% C.L. on the cross-section times branching fraction of (p$\bar{p}$→ (Z/W)H)×(H → b$\bar{b}$) which is 14 times larger than the Standard Model value.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The measurement of the Higgs-boson coupling to tau-leptons, based on an integrated luminosity of 36.1 ifb recorded at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV by the ATLAS detector, is presented in this thesis. The analysis considers all combinations of leptonic and hadronic decays of tau-leptons, and targets the main two production modes of the Higgs boson, gluon Fusion and Vector-Boson Fusion. The inclusive cross section of the H->tautau decay channel is measured as 3.77 +1.06-0.95 (+0.60-0.59 (Stat.) +0.87-0.74 (Syst.)) pb, which corresponds to a deviation from the background-only hypothesis with an observed (expected) significance of 4.4 (4.1) standard deviations. In addition, the measurement of cross sections in the framework of Simplified Template Cross Sections is discussed. All measurement are in agreement with predictions of the Standard Model. The combined measurement of Higgs-boson properties is also presented, based on up to 79.8 ifb of data recorded at sqrt(s) = 13 TeV by the ATLAS detector. An observation of the four main production modes (ggF, VBF, VH and ttH+tH) and of four of the five main decay channels (H->gammagamma, H->ZZ, H->WW and H->bb) of the Higgs boson is achieved. In particular, the deviation from the background-only hypothesis with an observed (expected) significance of 6.5 (5.3) standard deviations for the VBF production mode is the first observation of this process by a single experiment. Measurements in the scope of the kappa-framework and of Simplified Template Cross Sections are also discussed. All the performed measurements are compatible with the Standard-Model expectations

Book excerpt: We present a search for the standard model Higgs boson in final states with an electron or muon and a hadronically decaying tau lepton in association with two or more jets using 9.7 fb-1 of Run II Fermilab Tevatron Collider data collected with the D0 detector. The analysis is sensitive to Higgs boson production via gluon fusion, associated vector boson production, and vector boson fusion, followed by the Higgs boson decay to tau lepton pairs or to W boson pairs. The ratios of 95% C.L. upper limits on the cross section times branching ratio to those predicted by the standard model are obtained for orthogonal subsamples that are enriched in either H → [tau] [tau] decays or H → WW decays, and for the combination of these subsample limits. The observed and expected limit ratios for the combined subsamples at a Higgs boson mass of 125 GeV are 11.3 and 9.0 respectively.

The analysis is performed on data from proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8TeV collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The samples used for this search were collected in 2012 and correspond to integrated luminosities in the range 19.5-20.3 fb-1. The MSSM Higgs bosons are searched for in the [tau] [tau] final state. No significant excess over the expected background is observed, and exclusion limits are derived for the production cross section times branching fraction of a scalar particle as a function of its mass. The results are also interpreted in the MSSM parameter space for various benchmark scenarios.

Book excerpt: This thesis describes the stand-alone discovery and measurement of the Higgs boson in its decays to two W bosons using the Run-I ATLAS dataset. This is the most precise measurement of gluon-fusion Higgs boson production and is among the most significant results attained at the LHC. The thesis provides an exceptionally clear exposition on a complicated analysis performed by a large team of researchers. Aspects of the analysis performed by the author are explained in detail; these include new methods for evaluating uncertainties on the jet binning used in the analysis and for estimating the background due to associated production of a W boson and an off-shell photon. The thesis also describes a measurement of the WW cross section, an essential background to Higgs boson production. The primary motivation of the LHC was to prove or disprove the existence of the Higgs boson. In 2012, CERN announced this discovery and the resultant ATLAS publication contained three decay channels: gg, ZZ, and WW.

This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents a cross-section measurement of the Z -+ TeTh process performed using the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. The data used were collected at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV during 2010 and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 36 pb-I. This measurement uses the final state where one T lepton decays leptonically, to an electron or muon, plus neutrinos, and the other T lepton decays hadronically. The "(* / Z -+ a, It and di-boson background processes are estimated using Monte Carlo simulation, the W -+ TV Monte Carlo background prediction is estimated using a semi data-driven method. The multijet background is estimated with a fully data-driven 'ABCD' method using three exclusive control regions built by inverting uncorrelated requirements on the isolation of the electron or muon and the product of the electric charge of the identified electron or muon and hadronically decayed T lepton. The measured cross-sections in each channel are corrected for the individual branching ratios and yield the total cross-section a(Z -+ TT, minv 66 - 116 GeV) = 1142 ± 135.5(stat.) ± 206.2(syst.) ± 40. 19(1umi.) ± 3.6(theo.) pb for the electron channel and a(Z -+ TT, minv 66 - 116 GeV) = 857.6 ± 81.4(stat.) ± 132.5(syst.) ± 30.19(lumi.) ± 2.8(theo.) pb for the muon channel, where the invariant mass of the Z boson is between 66 and 116 GeV. These are in good agreement with the theoretical prediction of960 ± 49.5 pb. Performing a measurement of a well-known Standard Model process using the ATLAS de- tector in this new high energy regime is essential for validating the T lepton identification in particular, which is essential for any new physics search such as H -+ TeTh' A cut-based analysis for the Vector Boson Fusion produced Higgs boson decaying to two T leptons channel is introduced and the possibility of using the more complex analysis technique, the Matrix Element method, to increase sensitivity is discussed.

Book excerpt: We report on a search for the standard model Higgs boson decaying into pairs of? leptons in p{bar p} collisions produced by the Tevatron at √s = 1.96 TeV. The analyzed data sample was recorded by the CDFII detector and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 6.0 fb−1. The search is performed in the final state with one? decaying leptonically and the second one identified through its semi-hadronic decay. Since no significant excess is observed, a 95% credibility level upper limit on the production cross section times branching ratio to the?? final state is set for hypothetical Higgs boson masses between 100 and 150 GeV/c2. For a Higgs boson of 120 GeV/c2 the observed (expected) limit is 14.6 (15.3) the predicted value.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis describes a Standard Model (SM) cross section measurement of W+bb as well as a search for neutral Higgs bosons in the Minimal Supersymmetric Extension of the Standard Model (MSSM) decaying to tau pairs. The measurement of W+bb was performed using proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV in a data sample collected with the CMS experiment at the LHC corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 1/fb. The W+bb events are selected in the W to muon + neutrino decay mode by requiring a muon with transverse momentum pT>25 GeV and pseudorapidity absolute eta less than 2.1, and exactly two b-tagged jets with pT>25 GeV and absolute eta less than 2.4. The measured W+bb production cross section in the fiducial region, calculated at the level of final-state particles, is 0.53± 0.05(stat.) ± 0.09 (syst.) ± 0.06 (theory) ± 0.01 (lum.) pb, in agreement with the SM prediction. This measurement is a sensitive test of heavy quark production calculated with perturbative QCD. It also serves as an important benchmark in new physics searches which include a single isolated lepton and one or more b jets in the final state, as W+bb becomes an irreducible background. Also presented is a search for the CP-even MSSM Higgs bosons, H and h, and the CP-odd MSSM pseudoscalar, A, in their decays to tau pairs. This search is performed using events recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2011 and 2012 at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV and 8 TeV respectively. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 24.6 1/fb, with 4.9 1/fb at 7 TeV and 19.7 1/fb at 8 TeV. To enhance the sensitivity to neutral MSSM Higgs bosons, the search includes the case where the Higgs boson is produced in association with a b-quark jet. No excess is observed in the tau-pair invariant-mass spectrum.

Book excerpt: This thesis describes the search for the Standard Model Higgs boson decaying to tau lepton pairs, in the Tevatron proton-antiproton collisions at a center of mass energy $\sqrt{s}$ = 1.96 TeV. The search is based on approximately 2.3 fb$^{-1}$ of CDF Run II data and is performed by considering the following signal processes: WH($\rightarrow\tau\tau$), ZH($\rightarrow\tau\tau$), qHq'$\rightarrow$q$\tau\tau$q' and gg$\rightarrow$H$\rightarrow\tau\tau$. Events are selected by requiring an hadronic tau and one isolated electron or muon, coming from the leptonic decay of one of the two taus. In addition, at least one calorimeter jet must be present in the final state. We expect 921.8$\pm$48.9 background events in the 1 jet channel and 159.4$\pm$11.6 in the $\ge$ 2 jets channel, while in data we observe 965 and 166 events, respectively. In order to improve the search sensitivity we employ a multivariate technique, based on a set of Boosted Decision Trees trained to get the best sep aration between signal and the dominant sources of background. We observe no evidence for a Higgs boson signal and therefore we set a 95\% confidence level (C.L.) upper limit on the cross section relative to the SM predictions ($\sigma/\sigma_{\mathrm{SM}}$). Results are presented for the Higgs boson mass varying from M$_\mathrm{H}$ = 100 GeV/$c^2$ to M$_\mathrm{H}$ = 150 GeV/$c^2$. For the mass hypothesis of 120 GeV/c$^2$ the observed limit is 27.2, while the corresponding expected value is 23.4$^{+9.8}_{-6.4}$.
