Book excerpt: The theme of the book is NEWS every day - due to Globalisation, INTERNET and a lack of ability to reform - and due to fact that platforms of power and adjacent positions are at stake. This is a fact whether it concerns a Corporation, a Nation - or an International Body for Relief and Development supposed to serve a higher end. Two women and two men met to address ethics and enterprise. It became a Voyage for Continuity and resulted in the writing of a trilogy. This book follows up a trilogy: "Voyage for Continuity - the Altruistic Gene." It explains the need of "pro-active guardians of pluralism"; namely, the elected and thereby legitimate persons in vital positions on bodies of governance like a Senate, a Commission and a Supervisory Board. The Challenge of altruistic senators / independent commissioners / outside directors is to serve- and to assure (even the Adversaries of Pluralism): *Transparency and Enlightenment / Fair Play and Separation of the Roles; *Institutional Development and free Access to adequate Public Basic Infrastructure; *Gender Equality; *Protection of the Positive- and the Negative Rights of the Citizen *Proper Representation of the Needs- and the Interests of the Atomist. There must be Protection of the elected "Pro-Active Guardians of Pluralism" - whether the Adversaries of Pluralism like it - or not. Progress of the above factors can build Public Trust - and prevent that the Main Parties at play (each- and everyone) will cater for themselves. The Majority of Mankind fears Obscurantism and its Consequences. Obscurantism = the "holding back" in self-interest - can be found everywhere. This book focuses on the Role of an Outside Director in a Legal Entity or aPublic Infrastructure Activity, but the same professional standards apply to the elected Independent Commissioner and the elected Altruistic Senator - they are "Pro-active Guardians of Pluralism." The book is a commemoration of a female professional, who died alone and unprotected, because she became a risk to a multi-role corporate powerhouse with something sinister to hide. They could not let her witness - she would not let herself become a hostage and an accomplice to their scam. Stances for Pluralism, Transparency and Enlightenment need Protection, since the individual Director / Commissioner / Senator is a visible and simple Target for the diverse, powerful "Obscurantists" (French = the Partisans of Obscurantism) - and if so, then we / you / I are also at risk - or we are all losing indirectly... The book sketches a roadmap to healthier democracies, which are robust enough to let populism, fundamentalism and extremism play their tunes subject to no violation of the rights of innocent bystanders, potential- and existing followers. It advocates dialogue, but not the illusion of one consensus based on the leading sentences of central player(s) - for the benefit of a hidden agenda or pure self-interest. The roadmap contains parallel, reinforcing initiatives for reform and improvement of International Movements (like the religious ones) and Intl. Organizations, like United Nations and its Network of Member Nations - as well as of Unions of Nations, like the EU. It is a model of thought for pluralism and transparency, inspired by democratic values. The Goal and the final Test: The Say of the Electorate shall prevail, when Election-day is over. It shall do so by means of fit and properRepresentation and pro-active Protection of the Atomist ( = an individual without influence alone).

Book excerpt: Travelling is one of the most fascinating phenomena that has inspired writers and scholars from Antiquity to our postmodern age. The father of history, Herodotus, was also a traveller, whose Histories can easily be considered a travel account. The first volume of this book is dedicated to the period starting from Herodotus himself until the end of the Middle Ages with focus on the Balkans, the Byzantine Empire, the Islamic world, and South-Eastern Europe. Research on travellers who connected civilizations; manuscript and literary traditions; musicology; geography; flora and fauna as reflected in travel accounts, are all part of this thought-provoking collected volume dedicated to detailed aspects of voyages and travel accounts up to the end of the sixteenth century. The second volume of this book is dedicated to the period between Early Modernity and today, including modern receptions of travelling in historiography and literature. South-Eastern Europe and Serbia; the Chinese, Ottoman, and British perception of travelling; pilgrimages to the Holy land and other sacred sites; Serbian, Arabic, and English literature; legal history and travelling, and other engaging topics are all part of the second volume dedicated to aspects of voyages and travel accounts up to the contemporary era.

Grief over Janeway's impending death coupled with anxiety brought on by the disappearance of Paris, Kim, and the Doctor forces the crew to take increasingly dangerous actions in order to assure their own survival. But Voyager doesn't fight alone: behind the lines, powerful forces have allied to give the starship aid. Toward this end, a familiar nemesis -- the cosmic meddler Q -- sends Paris and Kim on a perilous journey. Elsewhere, the Doctor, trapped in a dimension alien to human understanding, reunites with an old friend to help secure the fates of those he's left behind. Yet the conflict raging in the Monorhan system is merely a surface manifestation of more serious turmoil; the true struggle is rooted in the universe's very foundation. Standing at the eye of this maelstrom is Voyager, whose crew may hold the fate of all.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 1754 to 1755, the slave ship Hare completed a journey from Newport, Rhode Island, to Sierra Leone and back to the United States—a journey that transformed more than seventy Africans into commodities, condemning some to death and the rest to a life of bondage in North America. In this engaging narrative, Sean Kelley painstakingly reconstructs this tumultuous voyage, detailing everything from the identities of the captain and crew to their wild encounters with inclement weather, slave traders, and near-mutiny. But most importantly, Kelley tracks the cohort of slaves aboard the Hare from their purchase in Africa to their sale in South Carolina. In tracing their complete journey, Kelley provides rare insight into the communal lives of slaves and sheds new light on the African diaspora and its influence on the formation of African American culture. In this immersive exploration, Kelley connects the story of enslaved people in the United States to their origins in Africa as never before. Told uniquely from the perspective of one particular voyage, this book brings a slave ship's journey to life, giving us one of the clearest views of the eighteenth-century slave trade.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A connected world as imagined by early modern European artists, mapmakers, and writers, where Asia and the Americas were on a continuum America and Asia mingled in the geographical and cultural imagination of Europe for well over a century after 1492. Through an array of texts, maps, objects, and images produced between 1492 and 1700, this compelling and revelatory study immerses the reader in a vision of a world where Mexico really was India, North America was an extension of China, and South America was marked by a variety of biblical and Asian sites. It asks, further: What does it mean that the Amerasian worldview predominated at a time when Europe itself was coming into cultural self-definition? Each of the chapters focuses on a particular artifact, map, image, or book that illuminates aspects of Amerasia from specific European cultural milieus. Amerasia shows how it was possible to inhabit a world where America and Asia were connected either imaginatively when viewed from afar, or in reality when traveling through the newly encountered lands. Readers will learn why early modern maps regularly label Mexico as India, why the “Amazonas” region was named after a race of Asian female warriors, and why artifacts and manuscripts that we now identify as Indian and Chinese are entangled in European collections with what we now label Americana. Elizabeth Horodowich and Alexander Nagel pose a dynamic model of the world and of Europe’s place in it that was eclipsed by the rise of Eurocentric colonialist narratives in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. To rediscover this history is an essential part of coming to terms with the emergent polyfocal global reality of our own time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Bursts with gloriously geeky detail.' The Telegraph Have you ever made someone you love a mix-tape? Forty years ago, a group of scientists, artists and writers gathered in a house in Ithaca, New York to work on the most important compilation ever conceived. It wasn't from one person to another, it was from Earth to the Cosmos. In 1977 NASA sent Voyager 1 and 2 on a Grand Tour of the outer planets. During the design phase of the Voyager mission, it was realised that this pair of plucky probes would eventually leave our solar system to drift forever in the unimaginable void of interstellar space. With this gloomy-sounding outcome in mind, NASA decided to do something optimistic. They commissioned astronomer Carl Sagan to create a message to be fixed to the side of Voyager 1 and 2 – a plaque, a calling card, a handshake to any passing alien that might one day chance upon them. The result was the Voyager Golden Record, a genre-hopping multi-media metal LP. A 90-minute playlist of music from across the globe, a sound essay of life on Earth, spoken greetings in multiple languages and more than 100 photographs and diagrams, all painstakingly chosen by Sagan and his team to create an aliens' guide to Earthlings. The record included music by J.S. Bach and Chuck Berry, a message of peace from US president Jimmy Carter, facts, figures and dimensions, all encased in a golden box. The Vinyl Frontier tells the story of NASA's interstellar mix-tape, from first phone call to final launch, when Voyager 1 and 2 left our planet bearing their hopeful message from the Summer of '77 to a distant future.
