Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bob Dylan was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in June 2016, and seldom in recent years has it been more richly deserved. That a song writer's lyrics should be regarded as literature was an idea at which many were surprised. Others have felt that to isolate the lyrics of a song from its musical context is unreal. Ultimately that is true: a song is an indefeasible whole, an inseparable marriage of words and music which achieves its overall emotional effect by that symbiosis and not otherwise. Yet it can also be said that the two components can be separately considered as two elements in the artist's creative utterance, and discussed as such. The evidence of Dylan's manuscripts supports the view that in writing his lyrics his way of going about things is not always widely different from that of a poet. Bob Dylan commented on the Nobel Prize in Literature which was awarded to him "for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition": "When I first received this Nobel Prize for Literature, I got to wondering exactly how my songs related to literature. I wanted to reflect on it and see where the connection was." Voice Without Restraint, refers to and is from the song "I dreamed I saw St Augustine" on John Wesley Harding, and is a phrase chosen to evoke the full-blooded commitment to his artistic utterance which is the hallmark of Bob Dylan's voice – in all senses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a child Ryan DeLena had difficulty controlling his emotional outbursts. This led to placement in therapeutic schools that relied on detrimental methods of behavior modification such as physical restraints. Nothing helped from a team of doctors to heavy medication. Then in 2010, Ryan was voluntarily committed to a mental hospital for further evaluation. His parents Rob and Mary Beth were counseled to place him in a group home. They refused. Two years earlier, after an impulsive decision Rob had to take Ryan skiing, he discovered a different child than the version experts were so sure about. By his second day of skiing, Ryan was executing advanced runs, and with each conquest in the winters that followed, Rob began to question the path laid for his son by the professionals paid to judge him. He later convinced Mary Beth to fight the medical and educational complexes over Ryan’s care and school placement, and together they fostered the freedom Ryan needed to pursue his dream of becoming a professional ski mountaineer. Written in two voices, Without Restraint is a joint father-son memoir told with both pain and levity, struggle and strength, adventure and heart. It is the story of a misunderstood boy, a father’s growth, and a shared love of the outdoors that formed their unbreakable bond.

Book excerpt: Published to mark John Herdman's 80th birthday in 2021. Writers, academics, publishers and literary figures from Britain, Europe and North America came together to celebrate Scottish novelist and critic, John Herdman. The cast of Not Dark Yet are John Herdman's contemporaries and friends, his students and readers. This celebration of John Herdman is witness to the strength of admiration that exists for this Scottish writer's work, a body of writing that extends over a period of seven decades. And seven decades is impressive — especially for a man who is only just turning eighty.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first scholarly English translation of the Ze’enah U-Re’enah, a Jewish classic originally published in the beginning of the seventeenth century, and was the first significant anthological commentary on the Torah, Haftorot and five Megillot. The Ze’enah U-Re’enah is a major text that was talked about but has not adequately studied, although it has been published in two hundred and seventy-four editions, including the Yiddish text and partial translation into several languages. Many generations of Jewish men and women have studied the Torah through the Rabbinic and medieval commentaries that the author of the Ze’enah U-Re’enah collected and translated in his work. It shaped their understanding of Jewish traditions and the lives of Biblical heroes and heroines. The Ze’enah U-Re’enah can teach us much about the influence of biblical commentaries, popular Jewish theology, folkways, and religious practices. This translation is based on the earliest editions of the Ze’enah U-Re’enah, and the notes annotate the primary sources utilized by the author.

Hall *W.B.Yeats *T.S.Eliot *Longfellow *Gerard Manley Hopkins *Emily Dickinson *Shakespeare Poetry first rented a room in my mind in English literature class at Borromeo Seminary in Cleveland. A Christian understanding serves as a flashlight in a cave: You can see more. The attributes of Christ - truth, beauty, and goodness - shine forever and keep verses alive. That's why poems live on. Songs continue to occupy my mind. I view most songs as poetry set to music. I greatly admire people who write poems and songs. Some create both lyrics and music like embroidery, and their works greatly affect others. I desired my favorite songwriters and poets to be in one book. I suspect someday Kris Kristofferson, Leonard Cohen, William Butler Yeats, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and many others will be best friends. They all toiled in God's vineyard, producing good fruit. I'm hoping this book gets published before they all pass, so they can enjoy this tribute to their "fine wine." Poets and songwriters who speak to those searching for truth take time to admire beauty, and are uplifted by acts of goodness. Poetry and songs were meant to be enjoyed, recited, and sung throughout the day. One can experience encounters with God through such works. These show the best side of mankind.
