Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a textbook on the Social Teaching of the Roman Catholic Church for would-be business professionals. Part I does 3 things: provides (1) a history of moral discourse since the Enlightenment, (2) a history of economic thought from Aristotle and Aquinas to Ludwig Mises and Milton Friedman , and (3) a history of property. Part II provides a close reading of 3 major social encyclicals. Part III examines the tensions between Catholic social teaching and neoclassical economics. Part IV explores 5 case studies of the actual implementation of Catholic-like social teaching. The over-riding theme of the book is that the original unity of distributive and corrective justice that prevailed in both economics and moral discourse until the 16th and 17th centuries was shattered by the rise of an "individualistic" capitalism that relied on corrective justice (justice in exchange) only. The rise of individualistic business practice was paralleled by a movement in moral thinking from a discourse of virtue and the common good to a discourse of utilitarianism and "emotivism"; individual preference became all that mattered, and only the market is capable of correlating individual preferences. An economics that lacks a distributive principle will attain neither equity nor equilibrium and will be inherently unstable and increasingly reliant on government power (Keynesianism) to correct the balances. Catholic social teaching emphasizes equity in the distribution of land, the means of production, and a just wage.

Book excerpt: This book brings the best of leadership theory and research together with biblical reflection and examples of leadership in action to offer a practical guide to Christian leaders. Combining expertise in leadership studies and biblical studies, Justin Irving and Mark Strauss explore how leadership models have moved from autocratic and paternalistic leader-centered models toward an increased focus on followers. The authors show how contemporary theories such as transformational leadership, authentic leadership, and servant leadership take an important step toward prioritizing and empowering followers who work with leaders to accomplish organizational goals. Irving and Strauss organize their book around "nine empowering practices," making it accessible to students, church leaders, and business leaders. Integrating solid research in leadership studies with biblical and theological reflection on the leadership ideas that are most compatible with Christian faith, this book is an important resource for all Christian students of leadership.

It is not only the change itself that is impacting so much, but more the rate of speed that change is occurring. To adopt new structures, adapt to changing situations and implement new systems requires innovative, flexible, visionary leaders. This is a learner-focused manual for training Emerging Business Leaders. It is not meant to be a scholarly dissertation, but a how and what to do manual or handbook. The manual is designed to empower a new kind of business leader - one that may have 7-10 careers during a fast-paced lifetime. Even though technology has a profound influence on business formation and operations, there are eternal principles that ultimately overshadow all else. These principles are time-tested and proven over centuries of industry and governing. Leading wisely is still a mandate to be embraced by CEOs and organizational leaders today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Wall Street Journal Bestseller Named a Financial Times top title How to unleash "human magic" and achieve improbable results. Hubert Joly, former CEO of Best Buy and orchestrator of the retailer's spectacular turnaround, unveils his personal playbook for achieving extraordinary outcomes by putting people and purpose at the heart of business. Back in 2012, "Everyone thought we were going to die," says Joly. Eight years later, Best Buy was transformed as Joly and his team rebuilt the company into one of the nation's favorite employers, vastly increased customer satisfaction, and dramatically grew Best Buy's stock price. Joly and his team also succeeded in making Best Buy a leader in sustainability and innovation. In The Heart of Business, Joly shares the philosophy behind the resurgence of Best Buy: pursue a noble purpose, put people at the center of the business, create an environment where every employee can blossom, and treat profit as an outcome, not the goal. This approach is easy to understand, but putting it into practice is not so easy. It requires radically rethinking how we view work, how we define companies, how we motivate, and how we lead. In this book Joly shares memorable stories, lessons, and practical advice, all drawn from his own personal transformation from a hard-charging McKinsey consultant to a leader who believes in human magic. The Heart of Business is a timely guide for leaders ready to abandon old paradigms and lead with purpose and humanity. It shows how we can reinvent capitalism so that it contributes to a sustainable future.

Book excerpt: ‘Leadership Legacies’ provides an invaluable reference point for senior executives or those striving towards a successful cross-border career, to understand how cultural differences impact upon leadership styles and practices. Each semester, we publish a report on our quantitative survey-based global study, alongside our review of extant in-country leadership literature, preferably written by local scholars and professionals in their native language. Moreover, we attempt to empirically validate these findings by conducting expert interviews with native specialists. This new issue of our ongoing leadership series presents country-specific analyses of culturally endorsed leadership practices and styles in the following countries or territories: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Faroe Islands, Honduras, Hungary, Japan, Laos, Monaco, Northern Cyprus, Republic of Seychelles and the Vatican. This publication contains contributions from around 122 researchers from 27 countries who participated in the Cross-Cultural Business Skills elective offered by the Part-time Academy of the Faculty of Business and Economics at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (HvA). Final Editors: Sander Schroevers and Christopher Higgings, Bibliographic editor Aynur Doğan. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do you struggle to reconcile your work in the marketplace with your Christian faith? Are you frustrated with the descent of our culture into intolerant factions that threaten life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness? The pursuit of social justice is a common goal of mankind, but the means to get there are of significant debate. Where can we find answers? Adam Smith foretold of extravagant passions that are harbingers of the ill-functioning free market we see today, where rights to private property and the rule of law prevail, but where an amorphous morality acts to pit class against class and threatens the very liberty and freedom on which a free market is built. You will find the truth about what is required for a free market to function well, and it may surprise you! Though many view business today as part of the problem, the Church views business and business leaders as part of the solution. This is true especially for businesses operating in a free market! You will be shocked at how crystal clear the Church speaks of business, its true purpose, and the necessary role business leaders play in the economic and spiritual flourishing of their employees. There is no substitute for the practice and perfecting of virtues at work. In this book, you will walk through history, economic theory, virtuous business practices including a new perspective on business leadership, and real stories of the application of these principles in business today. The 13 Tenets of the Transcendent Business will help provide a guide for you as you begin leading your business and your employees toward transcendence – the true purpose of business. Also, you may well experience the peace that comes with aligning your Christian faith with that to which you are called: business.
