Este hecho tiene graves consecuencias para el niño y su familia, ya que a partir de los tres años, que es cuando el trastorno se interioriza y empieza a formar parte de su personalidad, los tratamientos son más costosos, más intensivos y menos satisfactorios. Sin embargo, sabemos hoy día que la detección, el diagnóstico y el tratamiento del funcionamiento autista es posible en el primer año de vida del niño, lo que impide que se instale permanentemente en su psiquismo temprano. Para ello, habría que centrarse en el estudio de las alteraciones precoces de la interacción cuidador-bebé que dificultan o impiden el acceso de este último a la intersubjetividad, que es la capacidad de compartir la experiencia vivida con el otro, percibido como separado y diferente. El autor adopta una perspectiva relacional para comprender el desarrollo humano y su psicopatología, reforzada por los recientes avances de las neurociencias, que muestran cómo lo ambiental y relacional contribuye al desarrollo psiquicocerebral, modificando y regulando los procesos geneticobiológicos del ser humano, abriéndonos un camino esperanzador hacia una comprensión integradora del autismo.
