Book excerpt: Lauderdale County, established in 1835, is bordered by Tipton, Dyer, Crockett, and Haywood Counties. The waters of the Hatchie, Mississippi, and Forked Deer Rivers wash its shores. Ripley is the county seat, with Halls, Gates, and Henning being the county's other population centers. Numerous once-thriving communities dot the county. Its fertile soil made farming the principal occupation until the 1950s, when light industry arrived. Farming persists with cotton and grain the principal crops; the county is famous for its Ripley tomatoes. Points of interest in the county include Fort Pillow State Park on the site of the Civil War fort, the Veteran's Museum on the former World War II training base for B-17 crews, the Alex Haley Home and Interpretive Center, Sugar Hill Mansion, historic downtown Ripley, the Art Deco courthouse, and the WPA Depression-era painting in the Ripley Post Office. The bordering rivers, Open Lake, Chisholm Lake, and numerous wildlife refuges located in the county make it a sportsman's paradise. Located on the Mississippi Flyway, Lauderdale County is also a popular bird-watching destination.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With more than 100 vintage photographs. Nothing in the history of Ft Lauderdale had greater impact in its prosperity, than the Naval Air Station (NASFL) established in 1942. Recognizing this fact, the Naval Air Station Fort Lauderdale Historical Association can be traced to one man: Allan McElhiney a former WWII sailor who devoted much of his life to preserve a part of history. When the war ended the base closed its doors. Progress was about to eradicate the past to make way for a new Airport, but thanks to the long fight of a visionary man who saw the significance of safeguarding a bygone era, a Naval Museum was established. Flight 19 is one of the great aviation mysteries. It flew out of NASFL in 1945 to vanish into the Bermuda Triangle. In addition, a 19 year old future US President lived at NASFL as a young Ensign to train as a torpedo/bomber pilot. This is the inspirational story of one man who's commitment to the cause of preservation has encouraged many to look into our past, to safeguard our future.

There were several efforts to record the remembrances of the living former slaves. The Federal Writers' Project was one such project by the United States federal government to support writers during the Great Depression by asking them to interview and record the myriad stories and experiences of slavery of former slaves. The resulting collection preserved hundreds of life stories from 17 US states that would otherwise have been lost in din of modernity and America's eagerness to deliberately forget the blot on its recent past. This edition brings to you the complete collection of first hand experiences and voices from the past that makes one question whether is it safe to forget or keep the memories alive for bigger battles ahead. A must read for everyone who is interested in US History, race relations and authentic historical research. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the years just preceding the War of 1812 one man, an Indian, dominated the American frontier—Tecumseh. He emerges here as a vivid, splendid character, a man of unusual talents and noble aims, whereas in much previous history and biography he has been depicted as a baffling, sinister, often bloody figure—a man of inscrutable motives whose scheming for a time actually threatened to delay the settlement of the Northwest. Tecumseh’s great oratorical powers, his statesmanship, his military acumen, his personal magnetism won him the passionate loyalty of his Indians and the admiration of even his white enemies. In nobility of character, in leadership and in devotion to a lost cause he suggests points of comparison with Robert E. Lee. The need for this book is indicated by the fact that until its publication the standard biography has continued to be Benjamin Drake’s book first published in 1841 and ranks as a collectors’ item. Tecumseh’s great vision was a confederation of all the Indian tribes to check the encroachment of the whites on the Indian lands. His journeys took him from the Mohawk River in the east to the Arkansas in the west, from Lake Superior to the Gulf of Mexico. Mr. Tucker offers proof that the British in Canada did not push Tecumseh on war with the United States—as historians have claimed—but on the contrary Tecumseh urged the British to declare war. The high point of Tecumseh’s point probably came when with Major General Brook he captured Detroit and made a sizeable American army to surrender. Only a few months later his forces, outnumbered and almost unsupported by their brave and futile stand on the Thames River. Tecumseh was killed, and his dream of a red empire broken. So ended the mighty vision and the greatest of the great chiefs.
