Book excerpt: "To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the first successful planetary mission, Mariner 2 sent to Venus in 1962, the NASA History Program Office, the Division of Space History at the National Air and Space Museum, NASA's Science Mission Directorate, and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory organized a symposium. "Solar System Exploration @ 50" was held in Washington, D.C., on 25-26 October 2012. The purpose of this symposium was to consider, over the more than 50-year history of the Space Age, what we have learned about the other bodies of the solar system and the processes by which we have learned it. Symposium organizers asked authors to address broad topics relating to the history of solar system exploration such as various flight projects, the development of space science disciplines, the relationship between robotic exploration and human spaceflight, the development of instruments and methodologies for scientific exploration, as well as the development of theories about planetary science, solar system origins and implications for other worlds. The papers in this volume provide a richly textured picture of important developments - and some colorful characters - in a half century of solar system exploration. A comprehensive history of the first 50 years of solar system exploration would fill many volumes. What readers will find in this volume is a collection of interesting stories about money, politics, human resources, commitment, competition and cooperation, and the "faster, better, cheaper" era of solar system exploration"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For centuries, astronomers have placed a special interest on the other planets of the solar system. But with the advent of spacecraft and the tremendous missions undertaken by the Voyager and Cassini probes, astronomers have discovered that the natural satellites of the planets—the solar system's moons—are some of the most extraordinary places imaginable. There are moons with towering geysers, erupting volcanoes, and subterranean oceans of warm, mineral-rich water. Some of the highest mountains and deepest canyons can be found on the moons. There are moons that have shattered into pieces and then reassembled. There is even a moon where it rains rocket fuel. Recently, scientists have turned to the moons for answers in their investigations of the origins of the solar system and the evolution of life on our own planet. Featuring full-color, scientifically accurate illustrations by NASA artist Ron Miller, Natural Satellites: The Book of Moons chronicles these investigations and the questions we have yet to answer in our exploration of the solar system's moons.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thrilling journey through the solar system that merges imagination with hard science. Imagine traveling to the far reaches of the solar system, pausing for close-up encounters with distant planets, moons, asteroids, and comets, accompanied by a congenial guide to the science behind what you see. What, for instance, would it be like to fly in Titan’s hazy atmosphere? To walk across the surface of Mercury? To feel the rumble of a volcano brewing on one of Jupiter's largest moons? In Daydreaming in the Solar System, John Moores and Jesse Rogerson bring that dream to virtual life. Through a combination of story and science they let readers know what such an otherworldly experience would actually look, feel, and even taste like. With data gathered over the decades by our robotic spacecraft, and with Michelle Parsons’s evocative illustrations, Moores and Rogerson boldly take you where no living being has gone before, along the way giving an engaging and accurate explanation of the science. Where Carl Sagan’s storied “spaceship of the imagination” provided a window to outer space, Daydreaming in the Solar System opens a door, inviting readers to step through and truly explore the strange new worlds of the solar system. Undertaking this interplanetary journey powered by hard science, there is no limit to where your daydreams can take you.

Book excerpt: NASA's Solar System Treks provide researchers, mission planners, and the general public with a set of web-based tools for visualizing and analyzing the surface of a growing number of planets, moons, and other bodies in the solar system. These include the Moon Trek, Mars Trek, and Vesta Trek. Each of the Trek web portals allows the user the visualize the body's terrain in a two-dimensional projected view, and more importantly, a three-dimensional globe view. However, there are some limitations to the visualization system, particularly with the user-flow and controls when viewing close-up areas of the terrain. These limitations are inherent to web and standard desktop applications, as they are restricted to displaying the 3D models onto a 2D screen and accept only mouse and keyboard inputs. This thesis presents Trek VR Room, which was developed to overcome these limitations by introducing virtual reality capabilities to the Trek platform. Trek VR Room is a standalone, virtual reality implementation of the Trek system. Virtual reality technology enables the user to physically move around to view the terrain at different angels instead of having using a mouse and keyboard to reposition the camera. The user can view the terrain as if they were looking at a physical, 3D-printed model of the terrain. As a result, the user experience in terrain visualization is greatly improved. Trek VR Room also provides some of the analytical tools and features that were present in the Trek web portals, making it viable for research and mission planning.
