Book Synopsis Norfolk and Western Railway Stations and Depots by : C. Nelson Harris
Download or read book Norfolk and Western Railway Stations and Depots written by C. Nelson Harris and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2009-12-07 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tracks of the Norfolk and Western Railway snaked through Virginias Shenandoah Valley and the coalfields of West Virginia. For nearly 100 years, the Norfolk and Western brought freight, passengers, and economic vitality to large cities and rural mining towns. At each stop was the depot or station; some stations were large, architecturally ornate structures that represented the muscular energy and romantic era of this great steam railway with its famed J-class engines. In other places there were small wooden depots that depicted the hard-scrabble life of the mining communities, tucked amid steep mountain valleys that were indelibly shaped by the railways presence. Today some of those structures remain, while many disappeared when the railway ceased passenger or other service. The Norfolk and Western eventually merged with the Southern Railway, and though the trains of the Norfolk Southern still run along those same lines, they simply pass by where they used to stop many years ago.

Book Synopsis West Virginia Railroads by : Lloyd Lewis
Download or read book West Virginia Railroads written by Lloyd Lewis and published by TLC Publishing. This book was released on 2011-12-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fourth volume in the West Virginia Railroads series tells the story of the Virginian Railway within the state. Built late in the railway era, it was intended for the almost exclusive haulage of coal from West Virginia mines to Norfolk, Virginia. The Virginian operated a 136 mile electrified mainline, much of it through its West Virginia territory, which improved operations over steam power. Because of its lack of passenger and general freight, and concentration on coal, it had a reputation as an unmatched money-maker. Organized in 1907, it was absorbed by Norfolk & Western in 1959. The book has over 175 photos, maps, track plans and tables that illustrate operations as well as full sections on electric operations, steam motive power, passenger service (of which VGN had little), and data on each of its various branches in the coal fields. Many have not been published before. Hardbound and printed on heavy 100-pound glossy paper, this is a handsome addition to any library and will complement the collection of this series.
