Book excerpt: To examine the utility of non-dichotomous, empirically derived coping models, the present study analyzed three coping structures in relation to PTSD symptoms and hopelessness among trauma-exposed college students. Principal Component Analysis with varimax rotation yielded an unrestricted eight-factor coping model. Models restricted to four and two factors were also examined. Coping factors were differentially associated with trauma exposure, PTSD symptoms, and hopelessness. As compared to the four and two factor models, the eight-factor model provided more information regarding the effectiveness of specific coping strategies. However, the Avoidant Coping factor in the four- and two-factor models partially mediated the relationship between trauma exposure and PTSD symptoms. These findings have direct implications for individual and group interventions.

Therefore, trauma-related sleep problems among college students might affect academic performance. The present study of 226 college students examined associations among community violence exposure, sleep problems, and GPA, with particular interest in whether sleep problems mediate the relationship between violence exposure and GPA. Findings indicate that violence exposure differed by race/ethnicity with Blacks and Hispanics experiencing more violence than other ethnoracial groups. PTSD and sleep problems also differed by race/ethnicity with individuals who identified as "Other" experiencing higher symptoms. As expected, violence exposure was positively related to trouble sleeping and negatively related to GPA. However, sleep problems was not associated with GPA and therefore was not a significant mediator.

COPE represents an integration of two evidence-based treatments: Prolonged Exposure (PE) therapy for PTSD and Relapse Prevention for substance use disorders. COPE is an integrated treatment, meaning that both the PTSD and substance use disorder are addressed concurrently in therapy by the same clinician, and patients can experience substantial reductions in both PTSD symptoms and substance use severity. Patients use the COPE Patient Workbook while their clinician uses the Therapist Guide to deliver treatment. The program is comprised of 12 individual, 60 to 90 minute therapy sessions. The program includes several components: information about how PTSD symptoms and substance use interact with one another; information about the most common reactions to trauma; techniques to help the patient manage cravings and thoughts about using alcohol or drugs; coping skills to help the patient prevent relapse to substances; a breathing retraining relaxation exercise; and in vivo (real life) and imaginal exposures to target the patient's PTSD symptoms.

Research has also shown that therapy is effective in treating survivors of trauma. The current study investigates the relationship between trauma, mental and physical health, and the moderating effect of mental health therapy on the relationship between trauma and mental health. I hypothesize that individuals who have experienced more trauma will report greater depressive, anxiety, and somatic symptoms, worse sleep quality, more avoidant coping, and less approach coping. I hypothesize that individuals who have gone to or who are currently in therapy will report fewer depressive, anxiety, and somatic symptoms, as well as better sleep, more approach coping, and less avoidant coping. I also hypothesize that use of mental health therapy will moderate the relationship between trauma and depressive, anxiety, and somatic symptoms, sleep, and coping style. Oftentimes, an individual abuses substances in an attempt to eliminate the short term affect of these conditions. Post Traumatic Strss Disorder (PTSC), is the most persistent and severe type of anxiety disorder. It has been a long-standing belief within the psychological community that in order for PTSD to develop, the individual must first experience a taumatic event which meets certain criteria and must evidence a definable emotional response during the event. A recent study found PTSD in individuals who had not experienced the type of trauma described in the DSM-IV-TR, but had experienced long-term general life stressors. The purpose of the present pilot study was to determine if people with substance abuse disorder, who also reported high levels of anxiety and who had been excluded from a previous study based on ennrollment criteria, also showed qualifying PTSD symptoms without a qualifying trigger event. The purpose was to determine if a larger scale study was merited. Participants completed a series of questionnaires on life stressors, trauma history, anxiety, depression, and substance use. They also completed a semi-structured clinical interview to evaluate PTSD symptoms. The results indicated that on most depression and anxiety measures, the groups were not significantly different from each other despite the presence or absence of a DAM-IV-TR trauma qualifying event. Furthermore, clinical levels of PTSD symptoms were found among several individuals who had not experienced a traumatic event, indicating that a larger scale study is warranted.
