Book Synopsis In the Streets of Vinegar Hill by : Sr. William A James
Download or read book In the Streets of Vinegar Hill written by Sr. William A James and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2007-03 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William A. James Sr. has done it again. He delves into the emotional side of why Vinegar Hill, a 20-acre-tract, was deemed an unbearable slum, and had to be destroyed immediately in 1963. Everything wrong with Charlottesville was blamed on the innocent inhabitants of the "Hill." When three notorious hoodlums killed a UVA student, and Gabe Owens informed on them, most of the City Council and the UVA President swung into action. They masterminded a plan to demolish the homes and businesses of all Blacks on the "Hill," for the crimes of one or two people. The above were helped along by the actions of three "racist" police officers who had murdered William Griot, to keep him from divulging the secret that they were actually Blacks. This novel is intriguing, mysterious, spiritual, and down-home soulful all at once. In this novel, James enters the mind of the reader from page one, and does not let him/her go.

Vinegar Hill explores the liminal space between private experiences and public events as Tóibín examines a wide range of subjects—politics, queer love, reflections on literary and artistic greats, living through COVID, and facing mortality. The poems reflect a life well-traveled and well-lived; from growing up in the town of Enniscorthy, wandering the streets of Dublin, and crossing the bridges of Venice to visiting the White House, readers will travel through familiar locations and new destinations through Tóibín’s unique lens. Within this rich collection of poems written over the course of several decades, shot through with keen observation, emotion, and humor, Tóibín offers us lines and verses to provoke, ponder, and cherish.

Book Synopsis Phanerozoic Stromatolites II by : Janine Bertrand-Sarfati
Download or read book Phanerozoic Stromatolites II written by Janine Bertrand-Sarfati and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Precambrian stromatolites have received in depth, consideration from geologists and paleontologists; they were indeed searching for biosedimentary structures that were sufficiently characteristic and widely distributed to be considered as useful tools for stratigraphic correlation. Silicified stromatolites are also of interest as they contain preserved traces of ancient life. Calcareous Phanerozoic stromatolites have not received very much attention from geologists. Logan's too schematic morphological classification of 1964, was not so helpful to the knowledge of Phanerozoic stromatolites because neither their morphology nor their microstructure were studied in the same detail in which Proterozoic stromatolites have now been described. We therefore know little about the Phanerozoic stromatolites which, do, however, show an interesting range of diversification. A major questions stiII remaining to be answered include the history of stromatolite development and wether their morphology has "evolved" in addition to detailed information concerning Cenozoic nonmarine stromatolites which precipitate carbonate and the Recent giant stromatolites which trap particles. For these reasons Claude Monty, in 1981, launched the first volume of what was going to be a series on "Phanerozoic stromatolites" in order to describe their morphology, microstructure and paleoecology and to present them in their stratigraphic context.

Download or read book Sticker written by Henry Hoke and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2022-01-13 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Object Lessons is a series of short, beautifully designed books about the hidden lives of ordinary things. Stickers adorn our first memories, dot our notebooks and our walls, are stuck annoyingly on fruit, and accompany us into adulthood to announce our beliefs from car bumpers. They hold surprising power in their ability to define and provoke, and hold a strange steadfast presence in our age of fading physical media. Henry Hoke employs a constellation of stickers to explore queer boyhood, parental disability, and ancestral violence. A memoir in 20 stickers, Sticker is set against the backdrop of the encroaching neo-fascist presence in Hoke's hometown of Charlottesville, Virginia, which results in the fatal terrorist attack of August 12th and its national aftermath. Object Lessons is published in partnership with an essay series in The Atlantic.
Book Synopsis The Encyclopedia of New York City by : Kenneth T. Jackson
Download or read book The Encyclopedia of New York City written by Kenneth T. Jackson and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2010-12-01 with total page 1582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covering an exhaustive range of information about the five boroughs, the first edition of The Encyclopedia of New York City was a success by every measure, earning worldwide acclaim and several awards for reference excellence, and selling out its first printing before it was officially published. But much has changed since the volume first appeared in 1995: the World Trade Center no longer dominates the skyline, a billionaire businessman has become an unlikely three-term mayor, and urban regeneration—Chelsea Piers, the High Line, DUMBO, Williamsburg, the South Bronx, the Lower East Side—has become commonplace. To reflect such innovation and change, this definitive, one-volume resource on the city has been completely revised and expanded. The revised edition includes 800 new entries that help complete the story of New York: from Air Train to E-ZPass, from September 11 to public order. The new material includes broader coverage of subject areas previously underserved as well as new maps and illustrations. Virtually all existing entries—spanning architecture, politics, business, sports, the arts, and more—have been updated to reflect the impact of the past two decades. The more than 5,000 alphabetical entries and 700 illustrations of the second edition of The Encyclopedia of New York City convey the richness and diversity of its subject in great breadth and detail, and will continue to serve as an indispensable tool for everyone who has even a passing interest in the American metropolis.
