Book Synopsis The Trinity and the Vindication of Christian Paradox by : BA Bosserman
Download or read book The Trinity and the Vindication of Christian Paradox written by BA Bosserman and published by James Clarke & Company. This book was released on 2015-02-26 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The Trinity and the Vindication of Christian Paradox' grapples with the question of how one may hold together the ideals of systematic theology, apologetic proof, and theological paradox by building on the insights of Cornelius Van Til. Van Til developed an apologetic where one presupposes that the Triune God exists, and then proves this Christian presupposition by demonstrating that philosophies that deny it are self-defeating in the specific sense that they rely on principles that only the Trinity, asthe ultimate harmony of unity and diversity, can furnish. A question raised by Van Til's trademark procedure is how he can evade the charge that the apparent contradictions of the christian faith render it equally self-defeating as non-Christian alternatives. This text argues that for Van Til, Christian paradoxes can be differentiated from genuine contradictions by the way that their apparently opposing elements discernibly require one another, even as they present our minds with an irresolvable conflict. And yet, Van Til failed to sufficiently vindicate the central Christian paradox-the doctrine of the Trinity-along the lines required by his system. Hence, the present text offers a unique proof that God can only exist as the pinnacle of unity-in-diversity, and as the ground of a coherent Christian system, if He exists as three, and only three, divine persons.
Book Synopsis The Post-Mortem Vindication of Jesus in the Sayings Gospel Q by : Daniel A. Smith
Download or read book The Post-Mortem Vindication of Jesus in the Sayings Gospel Q written by Daniel A. Smith and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2007-01-06 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Q 13:34-35, the Jerusalem Logion, aligns the rejection of the speaker by Jerusalem both with the abandonment of Jerusalem's house and with the future invisibility and return of the speaker: 'You will not see me until you say, Blessed is the Coming One in the name of the Lord' (13:35b). The coincidence of not seeing language with a reference to a future coming is reminiscent of the connection, in Jewish literature especially, between the assumption and eschatological function. The book proposes that this reference to Jesus' assumption is a clue to how Q conceives of the post-mortem vindication of Jesus, since numerous Q sayings presuppose a knowledge of Jesus' death. In support of this, the book argues that in Hellenistic Jewish writings assumption was not always considered to be an escape from death (as in the biblical instances of Enoch and Elijah), but could happen at or after death, as was more clearly the case in Greek thought. Such a strategy of vindication is necessary for Q because it evidences a belief in Jesus' ongoing existence and future return as the Son of Man, and because resurrection though a feature of Q's eschatology is not individually applied to Jesus. A similar view is presupposed by the pre-Markan empty tomb tradition, which describes the disappearance of Jesus' body but narrates neither the resurrection itself nor an appearance of the risen Jesus. The book also draws out implications of the thesis for the place of the Sayings Gospel Q within the early Christian movements, particularly vis-vis the vindication of Jesus.

Book Synopsis CHRISTIAN APOLOGETICS by : Francis Beattie
Download or read book CHRISTIAN APOLOGETICS written by Francis Beattie and published by Christian Publishing House. This book was released on 2022-06-07 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally written in 1903 by Francis Beattie, "Christian Apologetics" is a comprehensive examination of the rational foundations of the Christian faith. This treatise delves into the philosophical, historical, and theological underpinnings of Christianity, offering a robust defense against various critiques and alternative worldviews. This updated edition has been carefully revised to make Beattie's profound work accessible to contemporary readers. The original text, rich in depth but laden with archaic language and complex structures, has been modernized for clarity and readability. Outdated scientific and philosophical references have been updated to reflect current understanding, and spelling, grammar, and syntax errors have been corrected. Moreover, we have replaced the archaic Bible translations with the Updated American Standard Version (UASV) to maintain the integrity of Beattie’s arguments while ensuring accuracy and readability. In this volume, readers will find a systematic exploration of key apologetic themes, including the nature and scope of apologetics, the philosophical foundations of theism, the psychological aspects of religious belief, and the critical examination of antitheistic theories such as atheism, materialism, and agnosticism. Each chapter is designed to build upon the last, creating a cohesive and compelling case for the rationality and necessity of the Christian faith. This edition retains the scholarly rigor of the original work while making it more accessible to today's readers. It is an essential resource for students, scholars, and anyone interested in the intellectual defense of Christianity. By bridging the gap between historical and contemporary thought, this revised edition of "Christian Apologetics" ensures that Beattie's invaluable insights continue to enlighten and inspire.
