He dreamed of becoming a jazz musician and without any musical background, bought an old clarinet and began to practice. He emigrated to the United States and, with little education and even less money, joined the United States Air Force and completed a 22-year career as a military bandsman. In his autobiography Vincent shares the intimate details of his inspiring life. An ordinary man by his own description he has experienced a lot-from war, to racism, to love found, lost, and rediscovered, to the birth of his children, and the tragic deaths of two of them from Lupus. Vincent's heartwarming story will engender hope and optimism in readers everywhere. Book jacket.

Book excerpt: Pearl River was part of a royal land patent issued to two New York businessmen, Daniel Honan and Michael Hawdon. Honan, the accountant general of New Amsterdam, and Hawdon, a friend of the infamous Captain Kidd. Immigrants later settled in areas they called Nauraushaun, Middletown, Pascack, Sickletown, Orangeville, and Muddy Brook. In the 1870s, Julius Braunsdorf permitted the New York & New Jersey Railroad to run an extension through his property, which gave his new sewing machine factory access to markets and materials. The factory would later be enhanced to produce the first newspaper-folding machines. In 1906, Dr. Ernst Lederle, a former New York health commissioner, began a laboratory to produce antitoxins and other medicines. With the success and growth of these inventors and their businesses, Pearl River became a nationally known company town. Since the opening of the Tappan Zee Bridge, it has evolved into a friendly, modern bedroom community of New York City and the second-largest hamlet in New York State.

Book excerpt: My parents forgot something when they ran... me. After scamming most of our town out of their life savings, my folks disappeared in the middle of the night. Forced to take me in, my estranged aunt and uncle shipped me off to Raven River Academy the first chance they got. In my town, the line between the haves and the have-nots is actually a twelve-foot gate that keep the unwanted where they belong. Nothing could unite the two factions until I set foot on campus. For the first time in our history, they all agree on one thing: I must pay for my father's sins. But why should I care? The joke is on them because I have nothing left inside. No part of me that isn't already broken. I invite them to do their worst. Until The Angels enter the game. The most dangerous gang in town has a score to settle with my family, and Cassius, Clay, Hiro, and Royal are here to collect. Raven River soon becomes a battleground of lies, deceit, and violence, and I stand at the heart of it. The gorgeous otherworldly Angels will remind me that there is one thing left that I care about... and they'll destroy it in heavenly fire.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vincent van Gogh’s life was driven by passions, from the religious to the romantic. These passions illuminated his work as an artist, but also led to his many disappointments in life. Whether attempting to be a missionary, falling in love with his cousin, sheltering a prostitute and her children, proposing to his neighbor’s spinster daughter or establishing an art colony with Paul Gauguin failure haunted him. Although his uniquely vibrant colors and dramatic brushstrokes redefined impressionist painting, success eluded him. Only after his tragic death was his artwork finally recognized for its intensity, appeal, and enduring impact.

America in 1982: Japanese car companies are on the rise and believed to be putting U.S. autoworkers out of their jobs. Anti–Asian American sentiment simmers, especially in Detroit. A bar fight turns fatal, leaving a Chinese American man, Vincent Chin, beaten to death at the hands of two white men, autoworker Ronald Ebens and his stepson, Michael Nitz. Paula Yoo has crafted a searing examination of the killing and the trial and verdicts that followed. When Ebens and Nitz pled guilty to manslaughter and received only a $3,000 fine and three years’ probation, the lenient sentence sparked outrage. The protests that followed led to a federal civil rights trial—the first involving a crime against an Asian American—and galvanized what came to be known as the Asian American movement. Extensively researched from court transcripts, contemporary news accounts, and in-person interviews with key participants, From a Whisper to a Rallying Cry is a suspenseful, nuanced, and authoritative portrait of a pivotal moment in civil rights history, and a man who became a symbol against hatred and racism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This is a travel adventure set in the legendary French city of Arles. Founded in Roman times, Arles is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in scenic Provence in the south of France. For the last hundred years it has been an important destination for the countless tourists who arrive in pursuit of the great Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh, who famously spent an intense fourteen months in Arles, painting the most brilliant works of his career (all those sunflowers and quivering landscapes), squabbling with fellow artist Paul Gauguin, guzzling absinthe, and famously cutting off the lobe of his ear, which landed him in the local hospital in the throes of a mental breakdown. Linda Seidel has visited Arles many times, initially to study the splendid medieval church of Saint-Trophime, but eventually to follow in the long shadow of Vincent's passage, which he recorded in numerous paintings and drawings. Together, they make a pair of charming guides, sharing with us the wonders of Arles's Roman amphitheater, which seats 20,000 people and has been in continuous use for two thousand years; the Alyscamps, a Roman cemetery featuring paths still lined with ancient sarcophagi; the Church of St. Trophime with its astonishing Romanesque portal; the Arles Hospital, which has been converted into a museum about Vincent; the cafes and bars where he hung out; new buildings such as the tower by Frank Gehry; and of course the Provençal countryside with its dazzling wildflowers and quaint farms. Ultimately, this is Vincent's story, told as never before through an engagement with the mysterious, culturally rich town that transformed his life and, indeed, the entire course of modern art"--
