Book excerpt: Henry Brackenridge was an explorer and journalist who embarked on his career in the early 19th century; through his journeys, we gain here an impression of Louisiana at the time. This travelogue takes us up the Missouri river and through many miles of bayou country, in landscapes hitherto uncharted. The journey of the author and his small company is full of sights; Native American tribes, native wildlife such as the buffalo, and the many unusual plants. Descriptions of the countryside, its hills, the sacred groves which the native tribes venerated, and of the river itself abound. This superb book serves as an insightful snapshot of how life was for people who had settled near the Missouri and Mississippi rivers at the beginning of the 19th century. A harsh wilderness whose bounties had scarcely been explored, it was this reality which Brackenridge ventured forth with a view of surviving and recounting his journey against dangers and obstacles. At the time of writing, Louisiana was an expanse of river and marshland. Man had not yet engineered the rivers to his own ends; undiverted, untamed, and mostly untouched by human habitation, it is in this book that readers gain an image - at times sublime, at times foreboding - of a world lost to time. For the young Henry Brackenridge, life entailed adventure and excitement at the expense of danger. His intrepid expedition would be the first of many such adventures; his knowledge of the land saw him serve as an intelligence officer in the War of 1812. He later ventured on a government expedition to South America, before seeking and gaining public office - first in the judiciary, and later in the U. S. House of Representatives.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Views of Louisiana: Together With a Journal of a Voyage Up the Missouri River, in 1811 During the winter before mentioned, I became acquainted with Mr. Bradbury, Fellow of the Linnean Society; a gentleman as distinguish-t ed for his agreeable manners, sound understanding, and general sci ence, as for his attainments in the department of natural history. My acquaintance with him naturally nourished the fondness I had begun to feel for the subjects treated of in this volume. In the spring following, this gentleman set off to ascend the Missouri in the party of Mr. Wil son P. Hunt, for the purpose of pursuing his researches in those unfrea quented regions. Shortly after his departure, Mr. Manuel Lisa, one of the members of the Missouri Fur Company, ascended with a small party, for the purpose of retrieving the affairs of the company, which had become considerably deranged: being solicited by this gentleman to accompany him, my wish to visit those countries was so strong, that I did not hesitate, notwithstanding that there was much to be feared from the hostilities of the Indians, who of late had been unfriendly to the whites; in so much, that it was generally supposed, that even the considerable party of Mr. Hunt would not be able to make its' way through the Sioux bands. The pleasure of being in company with Mr. Bradbury, whom we expected to overtake, was not a light consideraa. Tion. I accordingly ascended, and after an absence of four or five months, returned to St. Louis, with two boats loaded with furs and pel try of the company, placed under my command. Remaining at St. Louis until the month of November, I embarked for New Orleans, where I ar rived in December 1811. Here I met with one of the publishers of this work, Mr. Cramer, and proposed to him the publication of the es says before mentioned, With the journal of my Voyage up the Missou. Ri to which he assented, on condition that I would extend it, and add something relative to the state of Louisiana. Argues that the federal policy was flawed from the start and that the supposed refuge endured only until the needs of westward expansion made those promises inconvenient.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Osage empire, as most histories claim, was built by Osage men’s prowess at hunting and war. But, as Tai S. Edwards observes in Osage Women and Empire, Osage cosmology defined men and women as necessary pairs; in their society, hunting and war, like everything else, involved both men and women. Only by studying the gender roles of both can we hope to understand the rise and fall of the Osage empire. In Osage Women and Empire, Edwards brings gender construction to the fore in the context of Osage history through the nineteenth century. Edwards’s examination of the Osage gender construction reveals that the rise of their empire did not result in an elevation of men’s status and a corresponding reduction in women’s. Consulting a wealth of sources, both Osage and otherwise—ethnographies, government documents, missionary records, traveler narratives—Edwards considers how the first century and a half of colonization affected Osage gender construction. She shows how women and men built the Osage empire together. Once confronted with US settler colonialism, Osage men and women increasingly focused on hunting and trade to protect their culture, and their traditional social structures—including their system of gender complementarity—endured. Gender in fact functioned to maintain societal order and served as a central site for experiencing, adapting to, and resisting the monumental change brought on by colonization. Through the lens of gender, and by drawing on the insights of archaeology, ethnography, linguistics, and oral history, Osage Women and Empire presents a new, more nuanced picture of the critical role of men and women in the period when the Osage rose to power in the western Mississippi Valley and when that power later declined on their Kansas reservation.
