Book excerpt: Excerpt from Views of Louisiana: Together With a Journal of a Voyage Up the Missouri River, in 1811 During the winter before mentioned, I became acquainted with Mr. Bradbury, Fellow of the Linnean Society; a gentleman as distinguish-t ed for his agreeable manners, sound understanding, and general sci ence, as for his attainments in the department of natural history. My acquaintance with him naturally nourished the fondness I had begun to feel for the subjects treated of in this volume. In the spring following, this gentleman set off to ascend the Missouri in the party of Mr. Wil son P. Hunt, for the purpose of pursuing his researches in those unfrea quented regions. Shortly after his departure, Mr. Manuel Lisa, one of the members of the Missouri Fur Company, ascended with a small party, for the purpose of retrieving the affairs of the company, which had become considerably deranged: being solicited by this gentleman to accompany him, my wish to visit those countries was so strong, that I did not hesitate, notwithstanding that there was much to be feared from the hostilities of the Indians, who of late had been unfriendly to the whites; in so much, that it was generally supposed, that even the considerable party of Mr. Hunt would not be able to make its' way through the Sioux bands. The pleasure of being in company with Mr. Bradbury, whom we expected to overtake, was not a light consideraa. Tion. I accordingly ascended, and after an absence of four or five months, returned to St. Louis, with two boats loaded with furs and pel try of the company, placed under my command. Remaining at St. Louis until the month of November, I embarked for New Orleans, where I ar rived in December 1811. Here I met with one of the publishers of this work, Mr. Cramer, and proposed to him the publication of the es says before mentioned, With the journal of my Voyage up the Missou. Ri to which he assented, on condition that I would extend it, and add something relative to the state of Louisiana. Excerpt: ... on the Florida question, is the author of the well-known "Views of Louisiana," the most valuable work of the kind, along with the Geographical Tract of Mr. Darby, recently published, which our literature has as yet produced." Several original works of a recent date, fulfil their promise and are substantially nutritive--Such are the three discourses of the hon. Dewitt Clinton; the statistics of the hon. Timothy Pitkin; the views of Louisiana, by Mr. Brackenridge; and the geographical tract of Mr. Darby. Walsh's American Register. Introduction XXVII. Extracts from the Medical Repository. "Mr. William Darby appears, by his work, to be a gentlemen of high scientific and literary acquirements. His task of a descriptive geographical work embraces all that relates to the soil, produce, and natural history of Louisiana, and corrects not a few mistakes on many of those subjects which had remained unsettled, owing to want of sufficient observation, and of proper documents. No known traveller in that country has ever bestowed so much time and fatigue in collecting correct materials, and surveying distant and inaccessible points throughout the range of the various districts, the names of which, half Indian and French, would not perplex a little those who never were acquainted with the history of this interesting section of the New World, and which has "experienced singular vicissitudes of fortune, and a frequent change of sovereigns' M In its former governments, Louisiana was divided into parishes; but it was, nevertheless, geographically delineated, according to its natural grand prairies or meadows, into which the original settlers had seldom penetrated; it was therefore highly proper For Mr. Darby to attend to those very significant territorial...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Hand-Book of Louisiana: Giving Geographical and Agricultural Features, Together With Crops That Can Be Grown, Description of Each Parish, Climate, Health, Education, Fish and Oysters, Railroads and Watercourses Governor Murphy J. Foster, in his last message to the legislature of this state. Used the following forcible language relative to the agricultural interests of Louisiana: Louisiana has nearly square miles of territory, containing some acres. Of this amount about is of alluvial origin and the rest good up land. The alluvial region is now only cultivated along the banks of rivers, and the rivers protected mostly by public and private levees. The uplands are almost all susceptible of cultivation. The geological position of Louisiana forbids the existence of mineral products, Save salt and sulphur, and the general low topography furnishes no water power for the wheels of manufactories. Louisi ana must therefore remain for a long time as an agricultural state. Of her.28,000, 000 acres, not quite are 111 culti vation. Upon these acres there were grown last year products valued at some distributed as follows. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
